(Editors Note: Pastor W. Melvin Adams was one of the original twelve "committee"

members who meet with Victor Houteffin 1934 in an alleged effort to give a fair hearing tothe teachings of the Shepherds Rod. He was already known to have to openly rejected thismessage of truth, and tried to turn others against it by writing a 32-page brochure entitled,Seventh-day Adventist Teaching Versus The Shepherd's Rod in 1936 . This Jezreel letter written by

    V. T. Houteffis a response to this openly circulated brochure.)

ADAM'S BROCHURE AND THE SHEPHERD'S ROD

    Dear Friend:

! Here is Heaven's Truth of ElderAdam's brochure. Needless to say thatit is enlightening as well as interesting. This you will see soon after you beginreading. You have long been waiting forthis information and now you have it.

! Elder Adam's brochure, like all theother anti-Shepherd's Rod literature,

very plainly shows that the Brochurecontains only half truth about "TheShepherd's Rod." What we mean byhalf truth is here demonstrated byMatthew 27:5 and Acts 1:18: "And he[Judas] cast down the pieces of silver inthe temple, and departed, and went andhanged himself." Matthew 27:5. "Nowthis man [Judas] purchased a field withthe reward of iniquity; and falling

headlong, he burst asunder in the midst, and all his bowels gushed out." Acts 1:18.These two halves, put together, is whattells the full story of Judas crime anddeath. But the anti-Christians living inthe days of the Apostles, declared:

! "These divergent records positivelycontradict each other, and the authors

of them are nothing less than decei-vers."

! But were they? Matthew 27:5 tells the

first part of the story that Judashanged himself. And Acts 1:18 tells the

second part of it the way he died.Reading the two records together, theytell that Judas hanged himself, but that

either the rope or the limb broke off,and that Judas fell headlong oversomething, perhaps a stick, or a stumpthat ripped his abdomen, then hisbowels gushed out and that is the wayhe died. This harmony between the twogospel writers can be derived only if thereader reads to know the Truth, not ifhe is looking for pegs to hang his doubtson.

! The anti-Rod literature, however, veryplainly shows that by quoting from theRod the conclusions the Rod comes to,but leaving out the premises uponwhich It makes them, the authors of theBrochure are not trying to prove what

    2/9

the Rod really is, but to fabricate trapsfor the Brochure's readers to fall into.

How do they do this? In order torefute "The Shepherd's Rod," theyquote statements from It but leave outthe premises upon which the statementsare made! This unfair practice, halftruth, you will plainly see in thefollowing passages which the Brochurequotes from "The Shepherd's Rod":

! "'Note that the separation takes placejust at the beginning of the HARVEST;also that the tares are gathered in first.

The separation marks the beginning ofHARVEST. The HARVEST IS THELOUD CRY OF THE THIRD

    ANGEL'S MESSAGE.' Shep. Rod,

    Vol. 1, p. 104."Adam's Brochure, p. 8.

! The very first word in the Brochure'squotation from the Rod, you see, is theword "note" by which the Rod calls

attention to the fact that the statementsin the quotation are based upon theinformation laid down in the lines thatprecede the quotation. By isolating theproof upon which the statements aremade, the Brochure makes the Rodstatements appear blunt, unauthorative, without foundation and untrue!

! Here is another example: Further

quoting from the Rod, the author of theAdam's brochure again omits the Rod'sbasic reasons for the statement Itmakes, and it again starts with the Rod'sword "Note":

! "'Note that the existence of the

    present name SEVENTH DAY

ADVENTIST i s condit ional ,otherwise the NAME will be spued out

    of His mouth.'

    Shep. Rod, Vol. 1, p.101."Adam's Brochure, p. 9.

! Work of this kind is more than tohang a man without a hearing. It is tobury him alive and his witnesses withhim. It is violent injustice to the Rod,with intention to grossly deceive anyonewho reads the Brochure. And what ismore than these, is the fact that since

the Rod claims Inspiration for Itsrevelation, and since no one has ever satdown to prove It otherwise, the anti-Rod literature is anti-Heaven's Truth, blasphemy against the Spirit of all Truth

    unmatched wickedness!

! Obviously the premises upon whichthe Rod makes Its statements are left

out from the quotation because theauthors of the Brochure recognized thatthe Rod proves Its point and if quotedwould overthrow the idea which theBrochure is trying to put over. For thesame reason the Brochure sympathizersinstruct the laity not to read "TheShepherd's Rod'' literature and not totalk to Its adherents.

! We use the plural form, authors of theBrochure, because the Brochure hasnothing original; that is, the Brochureand all anti-Rod literature is only arehash of the "A Reply to TheShepherd's Rod." The Brochure's unfairpractice is seen all through the anti-Rod

literature misrepresenting the Rodand deceiving the people. Why do theydo this? Because the anti-Rodists areanti-Truth, and anti-Christ's people. They want forever to keep the Lao-diceans in their "need of nothing"theory, and in darkness of the Truth fortoday.

! The Rod does not make b l untstatements; what It says It proves. Butbecause the anti-Rodists judge others bythemselves they constantly accuse theRod of taking Sister White's writings

out of their setting but never producethe Incident. How true the statement,"thou that judgest doest the samethings" (Rom. 2:1). The "golden rule'' istrampled under foot by those whopretend to promote it!

! Let us now have a sample of theirhabit of quoting from Sister White'swritings and of their system of inter-preting them. Here it is:

! "'The tares and the wheat are to growtogether until the HARVEST, and theHARVEST IS THE END OF

    PROBATIONARY TIME.' Christ's

    Object Lessons, p. 72." Adam's Bro-chure, p. 8.

! This quotation they interpret to meanthat the wheat and the tares are to growtogether until probation closes and thatthen the harvest is to beam. But does

the quotation say so? On thecontrary, it says that "the tares and thewheat are to grow together until the

harvest," then it explains that the

harvest ends probationary time thatafter probationary time ends, then it isthat probation closes!

! If they were honest in theirunderstanding of her writings and of theBible, and if they were honest in theiranti-Rod work, then why did they leaveout the time record in which the Bibleplaces the harvest? and why did theyleave out Sister White's statementswhich repro ve the i r er roneousconclusion of the harvest? Here is what

the Bible says, "The harvest is past, thesummer is ended, and we are not saved."Any one who wants Truth can see thatsince, according to prophecy, no one canbe saved after the harvest, the harvest, therefore, is probationary time, that itends probationary time, that it causedprobation to close, that it brings theend of the world.

! "In the time of harvest" (Matt. 13:30),my friends, means that the harvest is ashort period of time, the last, the timein which to separate the wheat from thetares, the good fish from the bad (Matt.13:47, 48) the goats from the sheep(Matt. 2:31-33) - the penitent from theimpenitent, from followers of Truthfrom the followers of men, those who

have the mark of the beast (Rev. 13:17)from those who have the mark of God(Ezek. 9:4). The "har vest" and theJudgment for the L iv ing aresynonymous terms, you see. This isBible and It is Truth to which SisterWhite adds: "I then saw the third angel.

    4/9

Said my accompanying angel, 'Fearful ishis work. Awful is his mission. He is theangel that is to select the wheat fromthe tares, and seal, or bind, the wheatfor the heavenly garner. These thingsshould engross the whole mind, the

    whole attention.'" "Early Writings,"p. 118.

! "Only those who have withstoodtemptation in the strength of theMighty One will be permitted to act apart in proclaiming it [Third Angel'sMessage] when it shall have swelled into

    the Loud Cry."

"The Review andHerald," Nov. 19, 1908.

! "Thy people also shall be all righteous:they shall inherit the land for ever, thebranch of My planting, the work of Myhands, that I may be glorified. A littleone shall become a thousand, and asmall one a strong nation: I the Lordwill hasten it in his time." Isa. 60:21, 22.

! These quotations, my friends, areplain and to the point. They are notcunningly devised fables. They all pointout that the Third Angel is to do theharvesting, that the church will bepurified, that the Loud Cry is to beproclaimed by a pure ministry, that thechurch is to be "'fair as the moon, clear

as the sun, and terrible as an army withbanners,' she is to go forth into all the

world, conquering and to conquer.'" "Prophets and Kings," p. 720.

! The enemy of Truth has tightly closedthe people's eyes against this Truth and

as a result they are in a terribledeception. Says the Spirit of God:

! "I saw that the remnant were notprepared for what is coming upon theearth. Stupidity, like lethargy, seemed tohang upon the minds of most of thosewho profess to believe that we arehaving the last message. My accom-panying angel cried out with awfulsolemnity, 'Get ready! get ready! getready! for the fierce anger of the Lord is

    soon to come. . . .'" "Early Writings,"p. 119.

! Moreover, pleads Inspiration: "Awake, awake, put on thy strength, O Zion; puton thy beautiful garments, O Jerusalem, the holy city: for henceforth there shallno more come into thee theuncircumcised and the unclean." Isa.52:1.

! Note that after this call of awakeningis made to the church, to Zion and Jeru-salem, from then on the unclean and theuncircumcised are no more to passthrough her. Furthermore the prophetNahum adds:

! "Behold upon the mountains the feetof him that bringeth good tidings, thatpublisheth peace! O Judah, keep thy

solemn feasts, perform thy vows: for thewicked shall no more pass through thee;he is utterly cut off." Nah. 1:15.

! Again note, my friend, that God isdirecting your eyes to one whom He hassent to bring peace to you and to effect

    5/9

a revival and reformation among Hispeople, and that thereafter the wickedare no longer to pass through thechurch, they are cut off. Ask the anti-Rodists why all these references areoverlooked by the anti-Rod literatureand have them explain what thesereferences mean if not what these linesshow.

! Of course, it is incredible that min-isters of the Gospel would deal withTruth so crookedly, but here you havethe naked facts. Shall you close your

ears to God's pleading Word, and youreyes to what the master enemy, theDevil, makes of so-called "men ofexperience"? "Men of experience"? Yes,but of what kind? Do you see howdeeply the Laodiceans are deceived, andwho deceived them? No, not wolves insheep's clothing but Devil's agents inministerial garbs, and in no lesser degreethan did his agents in priestly garbdeceive the people in Christ's day. Please do not misunderstand me. I amnot speaking with malice in my heart, but in the hope of awakening thesleeping Laodiceans. No, I hate no one,and am saying no more, no, not evennear as much as Christ Himself andJohn the Baptist said when they utteredthe fol lowing against "men of

    experience" in their day.

! "Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows'houses, and for a presence make longprayer: therefore ye shall receive thegreater damnation. Woe unto you,

scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for yecompass sea and land to make oneproselyte, and when he is made, ye makehim twofold more the child of hell thanyourselves. Woe unto you, ye blindguides, which say, Whosoever shal lswear by the temple it is nothing, butwhosoever shall swear by the gold of thetemple, he is a debtor!

! "Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint andanise and cummin, and have omittedthe weightier matters of the law,

judgment, mercy, and faith: these oughtye to have done, and not to leave theother undone. Ye blind guides, whichstrain at a gnat, and swallow a camel.Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean theoutside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion andexcess.

! "Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse firstthat which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be cleanals o. Woe unto you , scr ibe s andPharisees, hypocrites! for ye are likeunto whited sepulchres, which indeedappear beautiful outward but are withinfull of dead men's bones, and of alluncleanness. Even so ye also outwardly

appear righteous unto men, but withinye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the tombsof the prophets, and garnish thesepulchres of the righteous, and say, Ifwe had been in the days of our fathers,

    6/9

we would not have been partakers withthem in the blood of the prophets.Wherefore ye be witnesses untoyourselves, that ye are the children ofthem which killed the prophets. Fill yeup then the measure of your fathers. Yeserpents, ye generation of vipers, howcan ye escape the damnation ofhell?" (Matt. 23:14-16, 23-33.)

! "But when he [John] saw many of thePharisees and Sadducees come to hisbaptism, he said unto them, Ogeneration of vipers, who hath warned

you to f l ee f rom the wr ath tocome?" (Matt. 3:7. )

! No, my friend, he who now tells youthat the Rod criticizes would have justas quickly accused the Lord if he hadbeen living in His day. The Rod accusesnone, It only tells the Truth as Godgives It.

! There is nothing in the excerpts fromthe Bible and from the Spirit ofProphecy which the Brochure quotesthat says or implies that the slaughter ofEzekiel nine takes place after probationcloses for the world. Search and see.

! These anti-Rod ministers may claim tobe divinely appointed, but if they are,

then let them remember that Aaron'stwo sons (Nadab and Abihu) were alsodivinely appointed, nevertheless afterdisobeying they dropped dead. Also letthem remember that the lukewarmangel (minister) of the church of theLaodiceans is to be spued out, and let

them not forget that "only those whohave overcome temptation in thestrength of the Mighty One will bepermitted to act a part in proclaiming it[Third Angel's Message] when it shallhave swelled into the Loud Cry." -- "TheReview and Herald," Nov. 19, 1908.Neither let them overlook the fact thatonly a few great men will then beengaged in the work, and that thosewho have trusted to intellect, genius, and talent will not then be the leaders inthe work, that God has other servantswhom He is then to disclose to view.

Read "Testimonies," Vol. 5, pp. 80, 81.Ever remember that JUDGMENTbegins at the sanctuary. Read Ezek.9:2-7 and 1 Pet. 4:17.

! The "Shepherd's Rod" considers asSeventh-day Adventist doctrines onlythose which are approved byInspiration, but these anti-Rodists callSeventh-day Adventist doctrineseverything that is taught in the churchbe it tr ue or un tr ue . The n the ycompare their man-made doctrines withthe doctrines of "The Shepherd's Rod,"and because the doctrines disagree, theymake it appear that the Rod is in error. Here is one heresy with which the Roddisagrees:

! "And the number of the army of thehorsemen were two hundred thousandthousand: and I heard the number ofthem. And thus I saw the horses in thevision, and them that sat of them, having breastplates of fire, and ofjacinth, and brimstone: and the heads of

  • 7/30/2019 Jezreel Letter No. 8 by V. T. Houteff

    7/9

the horses were as the heads of lions;and out of their mouths issued fire andsmoke and brimstone." (Rev. 9:16, 17.)This is the picture which John gives ofthe 200,000,000 horses and horsemen.! Now compare Inspiration's own des-cription of the horses and horsemenwith the Denomination's illustration ofthem as given in "Thoughts on Danieland the Revelation," p. 510.

! Why can not the Denomination intheir exposition of the Trumpets use

Inspiration's own description of thehorses and horsemen? Why did theyhave to devise one of their own?

! The only answer that can be given isthat the Spirit's own description doesnot fit their uninspired interpretationsof the Scriptures. One's inability tointerpret correctly without Heaven's giftof interpretation, however, is expectedand is excusable. But to say that thevision was shown to the Revelator at sogreat a distance that he was unableaccurately! to see the kinds of headsand tails the horses had and where thefire, smoke, and brimstone came from,in order to tailor the vision to accordwith their interpretation of it, is notonly defiance against Christ's warning

concerning adding to and subtractingfrom the Scriptures (Rev. 22:18, 19), butit is also outright blasphemy. Do younow see who is teaching error and whois deceiving the people?

! The anti-Rodists' accusations that theRod is calling the church Babylon isanother falsehood. The Rod proves thatthe church is not Babylon and that isthe reason for which Its adherents stayin it instead of coming out of it, and thisis the very reason for which the anti-Rodists are trying to keep them out ofthe churches.!

! As to what the leopard-like beast ofRevelation thirteen is, we all know thatthe Denomination has no establisheddoctrine on it. Let us therefore look at

it in the light of revealed Truth fortoday. Since the leopard-like beast is apart of the symbolical beasts of Danielseven, we shall herein take a look at allthe Bible beasts in one picture.

! These beasts of Daniel's vision aresymbolic of the world in severaldifferent periods. For example, let uslook at the fourth beast in both itsphases: First it was seen to have tenhorns. Then another little horn cameup among the ten, and three wereuprooted. No sensible Bible studentwould disagree that this beast, as all theothers do, represents the world.Daniel's fourth beast pictures theregime of Pagan Rome, and then the

regime of Papal Rome the world in

    that day.

! All Adventists teach that the entirebeast symbolism does not represent thepapacy, that only the little horn whichhad a mouth and spake like a manrepresents the papacy, that the other

  • 7/30/2019 Jezreel Letter No. 8 by V. T. Houteff

    8/9

horns represent the kingdoms that wereto arise at that time, and that the beastin its second phase depicts both theworld's civil and religious powers. Sincethe little horn is a combination of hornand head, it depicted a church and state

system civil and religious power. Inlike manner the leopard-like beast ofRevelation 13 does not in its entiretyrepresent the papacy. The papacy isrepresented only by its one head, thehead that was wounded. It's ten horns, the same as in Daniel's fourth beast, represent the kingdoms of the world.

So as Daniel's beast depicts the world ofthat day, John's beast depicts the worldof today. Its horns are crowned becauseit depicts the world after one of hisheads was wounded, after the kingdomstook their thrones and reigned inde-pendent of the church.

! Now, since the wounded headrepresents a church, a religious system, and since all seven heads are on thebeast at the same time, not coming upor dropping out one after another, thehead symbolism is positively depicting amulti-sectarian world, the churches oftoday. So we have Heaven's graphicpicture of the world as it actually hasbeen ever since the church-state systemwas beaten out of it, and ever since

multi-sectarianism came in. This isBible and this is Truth.

! Since number seven is the Biblicalnumber for the whole, and since theblasphemy is over all the seven heads, not over the horns, the picture in the

light of present Truth clearly depictsChristianity under apostasy, and theblasphemies in the anti-Rod literatureclinches that fact. The Reformationinflicted the wound, and apostasy healedthe wound.

! Their associating the name Babylonwith this beast is adding to the Word ofGod. And as they do this in order tofight Truth, the act is blasphemy. Thereis nothing on this beast to indicateBabylon. Babylon is depicted by thescarlet-colored beast of Revelation 17,

the beast that depicts the world afterthe church is purified, after the image ofthe beast is made, after a second churchand state government comes into being, the next world regime. It is Babylon.

! This is the day in which "all things"are to be restored, and this is the day foreach individual, independent of another,to decide whether or not these anti-Rodteachers are the antitypical prophets ofBaal.

! Faithfully yours for open eyes toTruth, and for a heart to judge amessage by the Word, not by whobrought it,

For the nature and effect of Adamsattack brochure against the Shepherds

Rod, please see the following publishedtestimony.

    "A WARNING AGAINST ERROR"

PROVES TO BE GREATEST OF ERROR,

By E. T. Wilson "One of the oldest members of the Charles-ton, S.C. church, after becoming interested in

"The Shepherd's Rod" message, was visited

by the pastor, and a General Conference Field

Secretary, who gave the interested party a

copy of "A Warning Against Error," telling

her not to let any of the "Shepherd Rod" fold

see it. This instruction she faithfully carried

out. But in the meantime, she had come into

    possession of "Testimonies to Ministers,"

together with all the volumes of "The Testi-

monies for the Church," and to her great

surprise, she found the truth of "The Shep-

herd's Rod" taught in these books also and

    that the "Seventh-Day Adventist Teaching

versus The Shepherd's Rod" was not only

contradictory to "The Shepherd's Rod" but

also to the Spirit of Prophecy! Therefore, at

her first opportunity, during the fifteen minute

missionary service in the church, on Sabbath,

this sister arose and asked permission to

speak, and her request was granted by the

    pastor of the church.

"Stepping up to the front of the building, our sister said, "Elder______, I have never

practiced deceit in my life, and I am not going

to do so now," and holding up the little

    pamphlet, "Seventh-Day Adventist Teaching

versus The Shepherd's Rod, she continued:"This little pamphlet has made a full-fledged

Shepherd's Rod believer out of me, for I

found it to be the rankest sort, such as I have

never seen, of wresting the Scriptures, the

"Testimonies for the Church," and the

publications of Brother Houteff, and I believe

it will make all of you Shepherd's Rod

believers if you study it carefully, for you will

discover that it is filled with error." "To this sister's testimony the readers of thisarticle will permit me to add that the"Seventh-Day Adventist Teaching versus The

Shepherd's Rod" is also the most unfair little

thing I have ever read against any

publication! Nevertheless, again we see the

truth of that statement of the Bible which tells

us that nothing can be done against the truth

but for it, and that the "wrath of man" indeed

shall be made to "praise" Him." The
