This will be a delightfully short report, as with all the Chagim, not much has been happening.

The BBNSW Council meeting was held on 7th October. We welcomed Robbie Erdos as President of Syd Einfeld Unit and Guta Frydman as President of North Shore Kadimah and wish them both well for their terms of

office.

At the meeting Eli Tal, President of Sydney Masada Unit 1546, advised that at the next AGM of SMU he will table a proposal to change the name of the Unit to be called ‘BBNSW SYDNEY 1546’, that will have an overarching responsibility to look to the future of all the units at BB NSW when the time comes that units can’t proceed in their own right and will have to amalgamate into the one Super unit of BB NSW.

We had a delightful erev Sukkot BBQ. Although the attendance was modest, it was a very pleasant afternoon. Most of the attendees were from Syd Einfeld Unit, so we certainly had a nice cosy time. It is a shame it was not supported by more of our members from the other units.

Thank you to the helpers, as always, Dorrit Mahemoff, the Shapiros, and Wendy Rosenthal. Thank you also to Jenny Mandel for the meringues and all the prep she did to get everything ready and to hand for the BBQ.

We had Rabbi Phil Kaplan, the new assistant Rabbi at the Great Synagogue, as our guest speaker, who talked about Sukkot as described in the Torah.

Dear Members and Friends,

The first month in this role has been a busy but enjoyable one. My first official task was to attend with Sue the Annual General Meeting of the North Shore Kadimah Unit. At this AGM it was an honour and privilege to install Guta Frydman as the

new President of this Unit, taking the place of the hard working David Laufer. I would like to thank David for all that he has done during his time as President and wish Guta every success in her new position. It was wonderful having the opportunity to meet so many new people.

The following day I attended a meeting chaired by Ernie Friedlander who is President of the Alfred Dreyfus Unit relating to the Anti Racism Campaign he is organising. A number of concerned citizens from the wider Sydney Community representing various organisations attended and it was interesting to hear the various ways they believe racism can be challenged. I wish Ernie every success in his endeavours in this regard.

That same evening at the invitation of co-presidents Ann Milch and John Roozendal we attended the Aviv Unit and had the pleasure of meeting a number of the members as well as hear The Barry Milch Memorial Lecture given by Dr Jackie Curtis, director of Headspace in Bondi Junction.

We attended the regular monthly function held by the Unit we belong to, the Syd Einfeld Unit, where the unit’s new President, Robbie Erdos introduced the guest speaker, Ellie Zinsmeester whose parents were honoured as the Righteous Among the Nations for saving many Jewish Lives. It was a fascinating story.

A couple of days later it was on to the Sydney Masada Unit where President Eli Tal introduced Sue and myself to the members and I then gave a talk on some of the issues facing B’nai B’rith as we move forward into the future.

Talking of future, it was really an interesting experience to join up with Vivienne Radomsky, our BB project manager in Sydney and along with Sue take a number of children from Vivienne’s photography workshop into the city of Sydney where they took lots of photos around Hyde Park and Martin Place and had a great time. Needless to say, I slept well that night.

On Sunday we attended ‘Sunday in the Sukkah’ held at the B’nai B’rith Centre. A number of us enjoyed a delicious BBQ and it was pleasant to just sit, converse and of course eat.

All the above was on top of the High Holydays and anyone who says B’nai B’rith is uninteresting doesn’t know what they’re talking about.

Of course, serious issues such as the outbreaks of antisemitism, especially what occurred in Melbourne as well as the senseless shooting in Germany were discussed.

Next week we will be having our first Board of Governors Meeting and hopefully we can deal with exactly how we should handle these type of incidents as well as how we can improve our B’nai B’rith image and attract new members moving into the future.

In concluding this report, I would also like to say that we look forward to meeting many of our Melbourne members next time Sue and I visit Melbourne to see family.

Dear Members,We hope you moved well into our Jewish New Year and dealt with the Fast in your own fashion.

The rise of Anti Semitism:Have we learned from the past? Many have, but I feel more haven’t. We go on living, which is

wonderful by moving on. In doing so we shouldn’t ignore what has happened. I don’t want to sound alarm bells, but actions are needed to address the issue. It is 10 months now that our Unit started preparing a proactive Anti Racism program. It was in my report in the Communicator. But sadly only a few of you have shown interest. Yet outside our Members and with other organisations - we had excellent responses.

Our Anti Racism campaign:We managed to find a marketing guru, who is very keen and will now assist. In the Workshop we will consolidate the strategy – create a solid structure and work on the tactics to implement the program. Our 7 partner organisations already feel being part owners by including their outreach and initiatives in the arch that we initiated. We hoped to launch it end of November, but now it is more likely to be early 2020. We realise it is a step by step process and needs to have a powerful impact from the word GO.

Our AGM:Will now be Tuesday 10 December at 7pm at our Centre. It will give the opportunity to nominate or nominate others. We will forward the documents to you early November.

Succession Planning:This is a top priority, there a few younger people assisting us with the Anti Racism project – we hope to get them further involved.

Ruby Levett:You may recall - she got an award for her 2019 poster in the Harmony Day Poster competition. She is year 3 student, who is extremely talented.

She has now won the AJN "Rosh Hashana card competition". This is her winning entry.

She has an extremely talented brother 11 year old Jamie, who spoke brilliantly at the Campbelltown Multicultural Children’s Festival – before the Harmony Walk – displaying his sisters Poster and emphasising the value of Harmony. There were 6500 people present.

All the best,

Ernie

AVIV Co-Presidents Ann Milch & John Roozendaal

This month has been a short one because of the Yom tovim but it was a busy one.

I hope you all had a good Yomtov and that this year will be a sweet one with good health & good luck.

We enjoyed the JNF dinner with our hosts Dorrit & Len Mahemoff.   An enormous crowd was entertained & informed & Amazing Taste provided an excellent supper.

Two days later we went to Melbourne for the Triennial Conference. Our Melbourne brothers & sisters made sure everything went well.  We had a wonderful Shabbat dinner on the Friday night,  shule service at Mount Scopus followed by a lovely kiddush & an excellent evening cocktail party.  Sunday there were interesting speakers - Chuck Kaufman, BB International President, was outstanding.  David Samuels was installed as District President BBANZ and we wish him well.

The day finished off with an excellent gala dinner.   There was another gala dinner 3 days later at BB as we celebrated the farewell to Chuck Kaufman before he went home to Texas.

The play “God of Isaac” on 12th was well attended, well acted and most enjoyable.

The following Monday for the Barry Milch Memorial Lecture, Psychiatrist Prof. Jackie Curtis was our guest speaker at our general meeting.  Charismatic & delightful,  she spoke about mental health in young people.

On October 28th Rose Bay Police are sending a speaker to talk to us about their work & particularly security.

Gary Marx is turning 80 and is sponsoring the supper. Happy birthday Gary.

We were very sad to say goodbye to our darling Evie Visontay. She will be sorely missed by all who knew & loved her.

Pleased to report George Grojnowski is recovering well after his recent stroke and looking forward to going home from Wolper soon.

Wishing Bob Ebner a speedy recovery from a recent hip replacement.

Looking forward to our weekend away at the Shellharbour Resort. 13 rooms have been booked for 8/9 th November.

Sunday 8th December is our Break up Chanukah Party, 6pm for 6.30 $50 pp great food & entertainment, you are all welcome and please bring your friends and family.

RSVP Pam Younger.

COURAGE TO CARE Chairmain James Altman Report by Kathy Sharp Vice Chair

I have just returned from 4 weeks travelling in France.   This included a fascinating day visiting the Western Front where Aussies fought and died in 1917 and the new Sir John Monash Centre .

I walked through one of the many cemeteries and found several headstones with Magen Davids on them where I placed a stone.  A tragic loss of so many young lives!

I loved the Loire Valley, Bordeaux, St Emilion and then completed an eight day walk in the Dordogne and Perigord region.  I have to admit the holiday provided a welcome break from Courage to Care.

We are now in final planning mode for our 4 week exhibition for the entire month of November at the BAMM Gallery (Bank Art Museum Moree).

We have welcomed back Michal Levy to do the curatorial work for Moree.   She had previously worked on the Albury Exhibition in 2017.

Our teams of volunteers have now attended up-to-date training so they will be prepared for over 1,000 students who have been booked into our sessions.  I believe that our teams are excited and committed to ensuring the success of the programs.

Moree is an ideal location for Courage to Care.   Courage to Care was last there in 2003.   Roughly 22% of Moree’s population are indigenous.

Moree was one of the destinations of the famous 1965 Freedom Bus ride, led by Charles Perkins, (including Jim Spigelman), who brought racial segregation in rural Australia to the attention of urban Australia, in particular at the Moree public swimming pool as well as in pubs & theatres where Aboriginals were refused entry.

Moree has come a long way since then but still remains plagued by social issues.   Hopefully Courage to Care’s programs will go some way towards showing the community that “everyone can make a difference”.

We are highlighting two “Upstanders” (previously called “Local Hero”).

Aunty Mary Swan is a proud Gomeroi woman who has spent her entire life contributing to the local Moree community.  She was named the 2019 Moree Senior Citizen of the year.

Steele Sutton is a former state & Australian cycling champion.  He works at Moree Secondary College & as a youth worker for the Salvation Army.   Recently he founded the Moree Cycling Project aimed at inspiring young people to be physicaly active,

connect with one another and build confidence in their own abilities.

Courage to Care in the Classroom continues to make an impact with increasing numbers of schools making both return and new bookings

There are also several new volunteers who have completed their training so that they are now able to take part in presentations.   It looks as if the classroom program in 2020 will go from strength to strength.

The Annual General Meeting and Volunteer Appreciation Day is being held on Sunday, 24th November from 2pm to 4pm.  The Hon. Walter (Walt) Secord, MLC will be our guest speaker.

Please send your membership details and payments prior to the AGM for your eligibility to vote.

SYD EINFELD UNIT (SEU) President Robert Erdos

B’nai B’rith Communicator November 2019 Pg 11

We had another successful meeting in October, where Ellie Zinsmeester spoke, at times very emotional, relating how her parents saved Jewish lives in the Netherlands during the war.

Her parents were honoured as Righteous Among the Nations. Carrying on this theme, we have invited Jan Anger, son of Per Anger. Per was Raoul Wallenberg’s assistant and together they rescued thousands of Jews in Nazi occupied Hungary, to speak at our meeting on the 20th, October.

We usually meet on the third Sunday of the month, and we are planning to have a number of exciting professional speakers on widely different and interesting topics.

In addition, we are planning picnics, train rides and walks, ten pin bowling, quiz sessions, musical afternoons, get to know members and possibly selected movies. We also have a long running book club. In the past, we had regular games nights or afternoons.

If there is sufficient demand and you are willing to organise games get togethers either at the B’nai B’rith centre or at people’s homes on a rotating basis, please contact me. Also, please contact me or Chris Hill if you have any additional ideas for events for learning or enjoying. In the meantime please read the regular B’nai B’rith SEU Newsletters for exact information.

Courage to Care started on a shoe string and now has become a major initiative within B’nai B’rith. In the same way, I would like us to undertake a benevolence project which can become another major initiative. I’m thinking about fulfilling a special need in the Jewish or general community. Ideally, it should be something of a group activity that can interest both our members and members of other units. All ideas are welcome. Please contact Andrew Vadasz or me.

Our Big Fundraiser event is 17th November 2.30pm at the B’nai B’rith Centre! Robert Teicher will MC and play piano, Ben Adler on violin, Sydney Jewish Choral Society Choir and a number of other musicians will entertain you, and of course a delicious afternoon tea will be served! All for only $50p.p. The proceeds will go to Garvan Institute for pancreatic cancer research and Courage to Care. (RSVP to Yvonne Shapiro by Friday, 8/11/19. That is it for now, take care and stay in good health!

At the meeting last month at Princess Gardens, our new District President, David Samuels gave a very interesting talk. His wife Sue attended as well, it was very nice to meet them both.

There will be not meeting in October due to the Chagim.

Our meeting on Tuesday 26 November will start with our AGM. We will make a decision on a suggested name change from Sydney Masada Unit 1546 to BBNSW Sydney 1546, that will have an overarching responsibility to look to the future of all the units at BB NSW when the time comes that units can’t proceed in their own right and will have to amalgamate into the one Super unit of BB NSW.

This will be followed by a concert by Len Mahemoff.

Our next meeting will be in February our traditional first meeting of the year with guest speaker Rabbi Dr Ben Elton, senior Rabbi of the Great Synagogue.

A few weeks ago a small group of us went out to dinner to a new vegan restaurant in Bondi called Eden.

The restaurant is tucked away behind the new QT hotel on Campbell Pde. What a lovely experience we had! Great service, interesting food and

quiet ambience which is all that we require.

Belinda, Jenny Mandel, Viv and I attended the B’nai B’rith gala event dinner to honour Chuck Kaufman. It was a delicious meal and a special experience to see the stalwart members coming together to celebrate 75 years of B’nai B’rith in Australia.

Recently in the Jewish News, Rabbi Alon Meltzer, who is the Rabbi at Or Chodesh and the Director of programs at Shalom, wrote a powerful article called “Giving Women a voice in religious life”. It is very relevant to Womanpower that there is a Modern Orthodox feminist Rabbi who supports women participating in the shule service. If you would like to read this article click or copy this ling onto your browser https://1drv.ms/w/s!Al9V49viMRYT82t6qOtHbdMCPpcD?e=WOu1uJ

He writes “Today when we see Women assuming leadership roles in their professional lives and their Jewish communal volunteer lives, we ask the question: when will more women join us in taking leadership roles in religious life?

When will more men stand by our side and empower their wives, daughters, mothers and sisters to grasp what is rightfully theirs? All of this can be done within halachic framework, all of it can be done within the confines of tradition. All of this can be done meaningfully and in a way that uplifts our entire community. The only question is, will you join us?”

Thank you Rabbi Meltzer for your inspiring words and for recognising that women can play an active role in religious life.
