This year’s New Jersey/Rockland Jewish Media Group’s Chanukah Gift Guide comes a year after the

unprecedented nor’easter that hit our area. Many of our readers and their families have rebuilt their homes and lives — but no one will ever forget Superstorm Sandy. This year, Chanukah begins at sundown on November 27 and Thanksgiving is November 28 — so to all our readers and friends — Happy Thanksgivukkah!

Having Chanukah and Thanksgiving occur on the same day hasn’t happened since 1888 and will not happen again for thousands of years; the closest we will come are in 2070 and 2165, when Chanukah will begin sometime during Thanksgiving dinner.

This year’s Festival of Lights, therefore, not only celebrates the miracle of the Maccabees fighting to save the Jewish people from the Syrians and the miracle of the oil in the temple lasting for eight

days, it also marks the day Americans give thanks for all we have. Together, Thanksgivukkah is a celebration of tradi-tions, family, and food. It is with this in mind, that we wish everyone a wonderful Thanksgiving filled with lots of memories.

Think about what you might like for yourself as a gift and use that as a clue to what others might appreciate. Dreidels and chanukiot (Chanukah me-norahs) are always welcome and truly brighten homes for many years to come. Donations are the gifts that keep on giv-ing — consider making one to someone’s favorite charity.

The Orthodox Union has begun its Beautiful Child Campaign, the 17th annual Chanukah drive for hospitalized children, a collaboration of the OU’s Department of Community Engagement. Rabbi Peter Knobel is the Rabbi Emeritus of Beth Emet the Free Synagogue in Evanston, Illinois and is now serving as an interim rabbi at congregations in transition. He was ordained by Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in 1969, and earned a masters in philosophy and a Ph.D. from Yale University. He is a past-president of the Central Conference of American Rabbis (CCAR) and is a past-Chair of the CCAR Liturgy and Reform Practice Committee. He also has authored and edited numerous articles and publications in the areas of Jewish Bioethics, Liturgy and Zionist � ought and is the editor of Gates of the Seasons: A Guide to the Jewish Year, the precedessor of Mishkan Moeid: A Guide to the Jewish Seasons.

Rabbi Berman is now the executive director of the Charter Oak Cultural Center, a multi-cultural arts center in Hartford, CT.

H. Leonard Poller, ז״ל, was Senior Rabbi at Larchmont Temple in Larchmont, NY.

Dr. Edward Graham, ז״ל, was the Cantor Emeritus at Larchmont Temple in Larchmont, NY and was Associate Professor of English at SUNY Maritime College.
