Tishrei 5776
Dear Congregants,
“Why should I…?” In an age when 24 hours just isn’t enough time, when we’re all pulled in
different directions, when we have limitless access to entertainment and education and
information, the essential question that we ask ourselves over and over again is “Why should
I…?” Why should I watch this film? Why should I go to that museum? Why should I
volunteer for that organization? Why should I attend this sporting event? Why should I shop
at that store? “Why?” indeed!
Here at Congregation Emanu-El of Westchester, we have the answer to that question. We can
tell you why you should come to a particular service, a certain class, a social event or a
volunteer opportunity. The short answer is: community. In our hyper-digital world where we
connect with people most often by clicking “like” on a Facebook page, the temple offers a
place – a community – that is real, non-digital, authentic, filled with tradition and filled with
like-minded, interesting, enjoyable people. Every time you walk through the doors of our
congregation, you have a chance to connect with old friends and make new ones.
Our icons make it easier than ever to identify the programs, services, classes and events that
will meet your needs and add meaning and connection to life. The categories themselves
answer the question, “Why should I come?”.
Don’t miss the Featured Speakers & Programs section. Scholars to open our minds, cultural
mavens to excite our creativity; we’ve got another wonderful, busy year sure to exceed all of
your expectations. So come, bring friends, and re-discover this wonderful community of
people and the great programs that will engage your mind, heart and spirit.
L’shalom,
Rabbi Howard J. Goldsmith
RABBI’S MESSAGE
REFLECT & ELEVATE
We gather for Shabbat, holy days, festivals, memorial services and life-cycle events to
reflect on the themes of our lives as they echo through our tradition. Through songs
and readings, sermons and theatrics, sharing and quiet, we find our lives uplifted.
STEP-UP & GIVE-BACK
We live in safety and security, with an abundance unimaginable for past generations.
Donating our time and resources to worthy causes shows our gratitude for the plenty
we enjoy. These acts of tikkun olam (repairing the world) allow us to express our
Jewish identity in a fulfilling, important way.
SEEK & DISCOVER
Jewish study leads to vitality that keeps our minds sharp and our souls searching. Rather
than relativism, Judaism confronts us with issues that help to clarify our place in history
and our place in our world. Classes, lectures, text study, book clubs, Single Malt Torah,
and the Women’s Study Group: see what you can discover.
MIX AND MINGLE
The center of our congregation is our sense of community. We celebrate together,
comfort each other, forge friendships and make connections - that is what we can
uniquely offer as a synagogue. Log out of Facebook and connect with friends new and
old in the real world, right here at the temple.
FAMILY TIME
Family is the center of Jewish life. At our temple, your family will spend quality time
together living out the values that we all hold most dear and creating memories that
will last a lifetime. Congregation Emanu-El of Westchester is your family’s antidote to
our fast paced, digital, over-programmed society.
ICON GUIDE
VISION
A Community Dedicated to Celebrating Modern Jewish Life
Congregation Emanu-El of Westchester is committed to continuously fostering Reform
Jewish life among all our congregants. There are three essential pillars to realizing this
vision:
Instilling Jewish Values
We are committed to instilling and encouraging the practice of ethical and moral
values. This includes the mission of extending acts of charity within and beyond the
Jewish community.
Worshipping and Reflecting
We encourage active participation in Shabbat and holiday services, and activities as
a means of educating, building Jewish community, and sharing traditions. We aspire
to participatory services attended by all age groups.
Learning and Studying
We believe in studying Torah and texts of our tradition and relating them to the modern world. We embrace the concept of inter-generational study, family
education and chevrutah, study groups of people coming together to learn and
to discuss.
Through the implementation of these three pillars, we hope to strengthen a sense of
community among our geographically diverse and multi-generational congregation.
We welcome all to join us in interpreting Judaism, so that it may continue to be a source
of meaning and inspiration for our time.

FRIDAY NIGHT WORSHIP BY SERVICE TYPE
Sacred Stories Shabbat ♫
The joyful music of our band and the Temple
Tones fill this uplifting service. We’re inspired by
the sacred sparks we see in ordinary and
extraordinary stories congregants share with us.
This service inspires as it connects us to each
other and our tradition.
Early Service
This more casual, relaxed Shabbat service is
preceded by a 6:00pm “pre-neg” of wine, cheese,
juice, and cookies giving everyone a chance to
say hello before the service starts. The service -
filled with music and reflective readings - will
begin promptly at 6:30pm and will end no later
than 7:15pm (unless otherwise noted).
Storahtelling Shabbat ♫
Intrigue. Miracles. Love. Battles. Reward.
Punishment. Drama. Even a little comedy. Our
Torah is filled with stories whose themes and
messages echo in our day. Using the Torah-
through-arts methods of Storahtelling, Rabbi
Goldsmith will bring the Torah to life with
drama and humor, discussion and ritual. Come
and experience, as you have never before, a piece
of the story that has sustained our people for
thousands of years. Together with the uplifting
music of our band and the warmth of our
community, these are services to remember.

Through personal contact with seniors, our volunteers help deliver vital services to the frail elderly
and forge loving bonds between the generations. In the process, they reap a rich harvest of
friendship, wisdom, and mutual appreciation. DOROT alleviates social isolation among the elderly
and provides services to help them live independently as valued members of the community. We
serve the Jewish and wider community, bringing the generations together in a mutually beneficial

Pursuit of Justice: Tzedek Tzedek Tirdof
“My house shall be a house of prayer for all peoples.” - Isaiah 56:7
This year we will embark on a new journey of social justice for our congregation. Through
discussions with our members, we will identify those issues that move us when we read the
newspaper each day. Through thoughtful dialogue, we will choose one such issue to take on as
our own, to advocate for in ways that can really make a difference in our community and our
nation. In Deuteronomy we read that man cannot live on bread alone. We will always be
committed to the work of providing bread and clothing and help to those in need. Now, with the
puursuit of justice, we will also work to address the sources of that need through effective,
meaningful advocacy. Watch EmanuMail and the bulletin for further details. Want to get
involved? Call the temple office at 914-967-4382 and we'll make sure that you can help make this
initiative a success!
“Without flour, there is no Torah.” - Pirke Avot
We welcome contributions to support the work of our congregation. Gifts in memory of a
loved one are a fitting tribute to their lives. Gifts in honor of loved one's accomplishment
are a wonderful way to celebrate an achievement. Through additional dues, the Yom Kippur
Appeal, the Year-End Appeal or our Annual Benefit, there are numerous opportunities to
give throughout the year. We have a number of options for planned giving to ensure your
legacy and that of the congregation. Contributions are tax-deductible and ensure many more
years of wonderful programming like that described in these pages. If you are interested in
giving a gift of any kind, please contact the temple office at 914-967-4382.

Engaging Aging
“...Man’s potential for change and growth is much greater than we are willing to admit, and that old age be regarded not as the age of stagnation but as the age of opportunities for inner growth.” - Abraham Joshua Heschel Just as the synagogue is a place where young children set down roots in the fertile soil of our tradition, it is also a place where adults - no matter their age - can reflect on how to live a meaningful life. This year our congregation continues our important discussion about aging, and what it means to live “the third-third of life” with dignity, meaning, connection, fun and holiness. We're calling it Engaging Aging, representing the ways that we embrace this part of our life. Please add your voice to these important dialogues.

CONGREGATIONAL TRIP TO ISRAEL
AUGUST 2016
There is nothing like a trip to Israel to connect a family to our
heritage, to our congregation, and to one another. Experience
our people's ancient homeland on this special tour led by our
own Rabbi Howard Goldsmith and the extraordinary Israeli
guide Muki Jankelowitz. We will not only tour the most
interesting and important sites, we'll also discover why each site
and experience matters for us as Jews from Westchester.
Especially at this time, Israel needs visits from Jews around the world. Several families and couples
have already registered for the trip but there are still spaces left. Bring your kids, bring your
grandkids, come “just the two of you” or come on your own. However you do it, come “Stand
with Israel” and experience a trip that will change your life. Contact Rabbi Goldsmith for more
information including itinerary and pricing.
