Our new office at 201-475 East Broadway

in Vancouver allows us to continue providing you with great service

while significantly reducing our costs.

The first half of 2015 is now behind us, thus it’s time to reflect on the past

6 months and look forward to the end of the year and beyond.

Change has been a predominant theme thus far at JFSA. Senior Management

Consultant Richard Fruchter began advising the Agency in January and his wise

counsel has been invaluable as JFSA evolves to best meet the needs of our

community. With Richard’s help JFSA has:

• Strengthened its partnership with Jewish Federation, the Agency’s largest

source of funding;

• Relocated its office to 201-475 East Broadway enabling the Agency to

significantly lower costs while maintaining or increasing aid and services in

a rising cost environment; and

• Embarked on a comprehensive search for a new CEO who will leverage

the Agency’s service excellence and tremendous community support

to ensure that we fulfill our mission to enhance the quality of life for

individuals and families in our community. The process has produced

some excellent candidates thus far.

My reference to service excellence is underpinned by the little known fact that

JFSA programs have been studied and emulated by social services agencies

throughout North America. In particular, our highly respected Seniors Outreach

and Home Support Programs was approached by the United Way of the Lower

Mainland in 2013 to be the lead provider of their Better at Home services in

Kerrisdale, Oakridge and Marpole. Thanks to our personal, professional and

affordable service more than 500 seniors have benefitted this year alone.

Kudos to our hard working and deeply caring staff and management for their

exceptional performance in this regard.

Our 11th annual Innovators Lunch

is another example of excellence

achieved. We are extremely grateful

for the support this critical fundraiser

receives from both the Jewish

and non-Jewish communities.

This year, with the help of Brian

Scudamore’s inspiring words,

we raised over $290,000.

One of the programs that this money

helps fund is “YOU Matter”, an

intervention and prevention program for at-risk youth. Using a combination of

counselling, education, outreach, and specialized workshops we helped over

200 students reduce high-risk behaviour, increase self-esteem and self-worth in

the last year alone.

It is an honour to serve JFSA as its volunteer Chair given the importance of the

Agency to our community. On behalf of the Board I offer a humble “thank you”

to the Agency’s dedicated staff and management for their exemplary work and

to our many supporters. We wish you all the best for the summer ahead and

hope you enjoy this edition of Family Matters.

Sincerely,

Joel Steinberg

YOUTH

JFSA Programs

Benefits of Summer CampGrowing up I would go to camp every summer, first as a camper and later as

a counsellor, and I recall with fondness the many friends that I made there. If

you’ve ever been to camp you’ll probably agree that with the right people and

the right activities, it can be a life-changing experience with life-long benefits.

This past year at the JFSA we have been exceptionally fortunate to work with

donors to help provide these life-changing opportunities for children in our

community. With their assistance we’ve been able to support several families in

sending their children to camp this year through a special scholarship program.

That’s a great thing, because going to camp can reap many benefits for youth.

YOUTH YOUTH

TUNING OUT TECHNOLOGY AND TUNING INTO ONE’S SELF: Camp is an opportunity for youth to re-

discover how life works without emails,

cell-phones, tablets, Twitter and

Facebook. It puts the focus on relations

with real, live people!

BEING ACTIVE: Children and youth are meant to

run, swim, bike, hike, walk and

play. Camp provides them with the

opportunities to be involved with all

kinds of programmes that emphasize

movement, regardless of ability, as

well as fostering an appreciation of the

natural world throughout their life.

GETTING FREE TIME FOR UNSTRUCTURED PLAY: Free from the overly-structured,

overly-scheduled routines of home

and school, life at camp gives children

much needed free time to just be

themselves: a kid! Camp is a slice of

carefree living where kids can relax,

laugh, and play.

GUIDANCE AND MENTORING: Youth receive a lot of encouragement

from their camp counsellors and

that often leads to them developing

a greater sense of confidence in

themselves and their abilities. Placing

an emphasis on encouraging children

to believe in themselves and try new

things, no matter how challenging, sets

them up for life – it’s a win-win!

RESILIENCE: At camp, youth often try things that

they may not have done or tried before

– canoeing, kayaking, hiking, artwork,

music, drama, swimming, taking a lead

in activities, etc. Doing something new

helps youth to feel successful – and

here’s that word again – confident.

Tackling something that seems a little

inhibiting is a great way to conquer

fears. Kids might have set-backs,

however in a supportive environment it

is much easier to try and try again.

This contributes to an increase in

resiliency – a kind of “I can do this”

attitude which can be very helpful as a

young adult.

DEVELOP SOCIAL & RELATIONAL SKILLS: Being at camp is a special experience

where youth learn how to get along

with others in a non-school and non-

competitive setting. It is here that

they can develop the skills they need

to cooperate, resolve conflicts, and

respect others. Best of all, a camp-

friend can become a best friend,

sometimes for life. Camp draws

everyone together to play, sing, eat,

laugh and care for each other and the

environment.

Here are some of the top reasons for youth to attend camp:

Monthly giving is an easy way to donate to JFSA. Regular donations can be made

in affordable monthly payments and you can save postage and time with automatic

transactions. Monthly donations are flexible as you can easily increase, decrease,

pause or stop your gift at any time. A cumulative tax receipt is issued annually.

Monthly Giving

After over three decades of

conducting interviews, many of the

adults that I’ve spoken to report that

some of their happiest memories

are from the weeks spent at summer

camp. For others, these experiences

were “life-saving” and the reason why

they “turned their life around.” I think

that the benefits are significant – a

child learns through play, and camp

is about play, both structured and

unstructured. Summer camp provides

a child with many opportunities to

learn, to grow and to develop many

of the skills that they will need as

they enter into the rather challenging

adult world.

Ah, but if I could just go back to camp

one more summer!

BASIC RESOURCES BASIC RESOURCES

Project Sustenance: Living in Vancouver

Thirty-five years ago the community

stepped up to address this issue and

helped JFSA to create the Jewish

Food Bank that continues to this day

to meet the food security needs of

our community’s most vulnerable

individuals and families. In the face

of this challenge, we are continually

amazed at the individual generosity

of people in our community who

donate food items every day, often

without being asked.

The Jewish community in Vancouver is

a close knit one that looks out for one

another and JFSA is proud to play a part

in helping those in need.

Together we’ve done amazing things, but

there is more to be done. That’s because

in the Vancouver Jewish community, in

your community, 1 in 6 people live in

poverty and do not have access to fresh,

healthy, affordable food.

Unfortunately the demand for the

Jewish Food Bank is growing and that

means the Jewish Food Bank has to

buy food when donated goods run

out. With the help of two amazing

volunteers, the community stepped

up again and created an annual food

drive known as Project Sustenance.

What makes Project Sustenance

special? In addition to helping us

collect food for hungry families, it

gives Jewish students at local Jewish

day schools the opportunity to

practice the concept of tzedakah that

has sustained the food bank for so

long. This year the students at King

David High School, Vancouver Hebrew

Academy, and Richmond Jewish Day

School showed us how deeply they

understand this concept by exceeding

all expectations, as below:

• Richmond Jewish Day School –

collected over 1000 cans of food

• Vancouver Hebrew Academy

collected a full carload of food

plus 6 additional cases

• King David High school had

so much food it was delivered

in a van!

We are incredibly grateful for their

help in collecting this food and

have been able to feed hundreds of

families over the last two months with

their contributions.

We would also like to recognize the

Jewish Community Centre, Jewish

Women International, Beth Tikvah,

and Beth Israel for helping to organize

this event. Special thanks to Francie

Steen and Shelley Ail who launched

Project Sustenance and help us to

organize it every year.

In case you missed your chance to

donate a food item during Project

Sustenance, our second annual food

drive, Project Isaiah (which takes

place over the High Holidays) is

quickly approaching.

VOLUNTEERS

Volunteer Spotlight:

Guy Askadskyof people he counselled at JFSA and

to give back to the community. With

his help and support, individuals who

had felt socially isolated due to their

age, disability, or recent immigration

have been able to make new friends

and to improve their mental health

by working in the garden. In fact,

many have started their own little

plots in the garden that they maintain

themselves.

With the warm summer months finally

here many of us are out enjoying the sun

while going on picnics, swimming at the

beach, and camping. For Guy Askadsky,

the best part of summer is being able to

spend hours playing in the soil of the JFSA

Community Garden and growing food.

A volunteer in the garden for close to 3

years, Guy first got involved when he saw

its potential to improve the well-being

This amazing initiative only costs $1,000 to run and helps

feed over 250 people.

In addition to helping people live happier

lives, Guy has helped turn their activities

into a reliable source of fresh, healthy, and

organic food for the Jewish Food Bank.

Every other week the produce that he and

his fellow volunteers have grown is sent to

the Food Bank where it is shared with over

250 people in need of food. The best part

of this food donation is that by growing

it themselves, Guy and his volunteers can

provide people with healthier foods than

they can find in a store at a much lower cost.

Even more phenomenal is that this

amazing initiative which provides so

many benefits to the community only

costs $1,000 a year to run to pay for

compost and tools. After adding in the

money made from selling plots of the

garden to individuals that cost drops

below $700! That’s pretty impressive, but

Guy thinks that this is only the beginning

and that with the right people it has the

potential to achieve even more.

Amazing initiatives like this are only

possible with the help of volunteers

like Guy and if you love to garden, we

invite you to come check the Community

Garden out and try a little bit of

gardening yourself.

Give More to JFSA Without Using Your Credit Card or Writing a Cheque

Are you looking for

a way to reduce your

tax bill and make a

meaningful donation

to JFSA? Consider a

gift of securities.

Selling appreciated stock or mutual funds will

require you to pay tax on 50 per cent of the

capital gains. However, donating appreciated

securities to charity as a gift-in-kind, will help

you eliminate this requirement.

JFSA will issue you a charitable tax receipt

for the fair market value of the securities,

and most importantly you will feel

satisfaction in seeing your donation put to

good use!

For more information or to obtain a JFSA

securities transfer form, please contact

the Development Office at 604.257.5151 or

[email protected]

Mental health, like physical health, fluctuates across a

person’s lifetime.

Many factors can influence our

mental health – our genetic

makeup, experience with parental

or other attachment figures and

how we learn about and deal with

change. There’s often a stigma

associated with differences in

mental health. It can inhibit

people from seeking the support

they need and thus makes it

difficult for others to understand

their struggles.

At JFSA we are helping members

of our community to work through

the challenges they face, large

and small. Our supportive therapy

services provide the greatest

potential for an individual to move

through their concerns, build new

internal resources and experience

greater confidence in facing trying

periods of life.

“ I became progressively more anxious and depressed through the course of the summer. I was utterly disconsolate and barely able to perform [small] tasks.”

www.jfsa.ca/counselling for more information about how to get in touch with

someone who can help.

I was reminded of the importance of this approach when a former client wrote to

tell me how much better his life has become. The man who wrote me, Ben*, was a

man in his early 60’s who fell into a deep depression after a long-term relationship

ended suddenly.

Approaching other service agencies for

help, Ben was told that despite his urgent

situation they would be unable to see him

for over eight weeks. When a person is in

crisis, waiting more than 24 hours for service

is detrimental. Fortunately, Ben was referred

to JFSA and we were able to help him right

away.

Like Ben, many of the clinical clients we see

are the result of a recent event rather than a

long-term challenge. Whether it is the loss of a loved one like Ben, or another

type of significant change, such events can provoke powerful emotions that can

have a dramatic impact on the quality of life. Fortunately Ben understood that

he needed to seek out services and received guidance in a particularly troubling

time. For several months, Ben was seen each week. Over time, he re-gained his

resiliency and was better equipped to deal with his loss.

Ben is just one of the many clients - younger or older - who have been

supported during times of personal adversity. I know, as do my colleagues,

that when clients are attended to professionally and with the utmost respect

and care, there is the greatest possibility that their enjoyment of life will be

enhanced or even restored.

“ I knew that I needed immediate help, because the emotions and intensity that I was feeling at the time were overwhelming [and] emotionally crippling.”

“ I am very grateful to you and your organization for being there in a time of dire need in my lifepath. I have had considerable and further improvement in the quality of my life and relationships as I continued my sessions with you. Thank you so much for your excellent professional help.”

Jewish Tradition teaches that one of our key responsibilities is to make the world a

better place for future generations.

Your commitment to the Jewish community and your values is evident in your choice

to support JFSA. But have you ever considered including our agency in your will,

making a planned gift, or establishing a family endowment so you can extend your

commitment into the future?

Your legacy can provide help to individuals and families in their greatest time of

need. It is a reflection of your love of community and sacred Jewish values.
