    A MESSAGE FROM THE RABBI

Two weeks ago I had the privilege of representing our community at the AIPAC (American Israel Public Affairs

Committee) Policy Conference in Washington. I was not alone. There were over 18,000 supporters of Israel present. Many of

the attendees were not Jewish but, more importantly, more than 4,000 high school and college students were present. Several

members of the JCC also joined me. I ran into at least nine members, but I now know that many more were present. The

JCC actually had more than enough people at the conference to a have a daily minyan!

AIPAC's mission is "To strengthen, protect and promote the U.S.-Israel relationship in ways that enhance the security of the United States and Israel". Inasmuch as this core mission is of

the utmost importance to most committed and concerned Jews, we should make a concerted effort to have an even larger

contingent next year. Anyone who wants to join us next year should let me know. Better yet, anyone who wants to head up a JCC AIPAC Policy Conference Committee should reach out to

me. An AIPAC representative will be one of our featured speakers on a Friday night this coming summer and it would be nice to have a committee that can greet her and make her feel at

    home.

  • The Policy conference itself is essentially broken down into General Sessions and Breakout sessions. At a General session

all attendees join together to hear important speakers. (This year's list included Benjamin Netanyahu, Vice President Joe Biden, John Kasich, Hilary Clinton, Donald Trump, Ted Cruz,

Paul Ryan, Rep. Kevin McCarthy, Rep. Steny Hoyer, Isaac Herzog, and Senator Robert Menendez). These sessions were

so large that they were held in the Verizon Center.

The Breakout sessions were smaller educational meetings where people could have more intimate, and interactive,

learning sessions with experts. These sessions covered a wide area of topics from the Israeli economy to the broad regional

outlook; or from the US Israel relationship to the specifics of the implementation of the Iran agreement. During the breakout

sessions, the Washington Convention Center literally turned into a small city of education and conversation.

To see in more detail what the conference is like, go to the Policy conference website. There you can peruse some of the resources to which we were privy. You can also see all of the

speeches given during the conference. Here is the link: http://www.policyconference.org/index.asp.

I do want to share with you my favorite history lesson from this year's conference. It is about President Harry S. Truman and how he came to the decision to recognize the State of Israel. I

am providing a truncated version of the story below. For a more detailed account, here is the link:

    http://www.reformjudaismmag.net/rjmag-90s/998sam.html

In 1948 Dr. Chaim Weizmann, president of the World Zionist Organization, sought to meet with President Truman. Because

of an argumentative meeting the President had with representatives of Dr. Weizmann, Truman refused to have a

    meeting.

Weizmann knew that the backing of the United States would be important to the fledgling state and searched for another way to

get the President's ear. One name came up repeatedly:

  • Truman's lifelong friend, Eddie Jacobson.

They had first met when Eddie was 14 and Harry was 20. Eddie worked as a stock boy at a shirt store, Harry as a bookkeeper at a nearby bank. Despite differences in age and religion, the two

    became friends.

They served in the Army during World War I and, ultimately, decided to open a men's haberdashery in the heart of downtown

Kansas City. Truman and Jacobson's Gents Furnishings prospered for about two years, until the nation slid into a

depression in 1921. The business filed for bankruptcy, but the two remained close friends. Truman went into politics, and

Jacobson took to the road selling menswear.

Fast forward to the United Nations proposed1948 partition plan for the Middle East. President Truman may have wanted to

recognize the Jewish State, but the political climate was uncertain. His secretary of state, General George C. Marshall,

objected to recognition of a Jewish state in Palestine. And, apparently, both the State Department establishment and U.S.

delegates to the UN, especially the ambassador, Warren Austin, were hostile to the Zionist cause.

After the disastrous meeting between the President and the Jewish leaders, it was decided to see if Eddie Jacobson, the

long-time friend, could be convinced to use his relationship to speak with the President. Jacobson was, at first, very

hesitant. He did not want to take advantage of his personal relationship with the President. Thankfully, he agreed to

undertake what would be a holy task.

The President and Eddie Jacobson apparently had an

uncharacteristically heated exchange with Jacobson imploring the President to meet with Dr. Weizmann. After some back and

forth, Truman finally decided to meet with the Jewish statesman. The meeting took place at the Whitehouse on March

18, 1948. The President immediately liked the soon-to-be first President of Israel and, at that meeting, promised that the U.S.

would recognize a Jewish state if it were proclaimed.

"No leaven shall be seen or found in your possession during Passover."

The practice of selling chametz dates back many years, allowing it to be sold rather than discarded. In some cases, it may never leave the house, instead being formally sold while remaining in the original owner's possession in a locked cabinet. The sale of chametz is conducted communally via a rabbi, who becomes the "agent" for the community. See the attached form to sell your chametz to Rabbi Jay. CHAMETZ

  • On May 14, 1948, David Ben-Gurion, Israel's first prime minister, read a "Declaration of Independence" proclaiming the

establishment of the State of Israel. Eleven minutes later, the United States issued the following statement, signed by

President Truman: "This government has been informed that a Jewish state has been proclaimed in Palestine, and recognition has been requested by the provisional government thereof. The United States recognizes the provisional government as the de

facto authority of the new State of Israel."

Set in Israel, four women forge a friendship that sustains them as they come to terms with love

and loss, and the outbreak of war. Their intimate bond is strengthened by their participation in a traditional ritual that closes the circle of life. As their lives are slowly transformed, each finds unexpected strength and resilience.
