Welcome from the Student President 01

A big hello Hello and welcome to the 2012-13 course guide for Jewel & Esk College – and to the Students’ Association!

As Student President I lead the Students’ Association and sit on the Board of Governors and as a member of the Senior Management Team.

I am also a key member of the partnership board of Jewel & Esk, Edinburgh’s Telford and Stevenson Colleges, to create a new college for the Edinburgh region. It is my job to make sure that your voice is heard throughout the college merger process, and ensure that students are at the heart of every decision made.

I encourage all of you to participate in our class representative system and to become as active as possible in the Students’ Association. It’s a great way to meet people, expand your skills base and become involved in shaping the plans for the new college.

Good luck in choosing your course!

Lupe Gonzalez Student President

Welcome from the Principal 03

We have an extensive range of courses and delivery methods; so whether you are coming to college straight from school, after a career break or simply to update your skills and qualifications we are sure to have a course that fits your needs.

Students are at the heart of everything we do. We have an active Students’ Association with student representatives sitting on many of the committees and working groups that steer the running of the college. We have some of the best facilities in the country for learning and a dedicated and hardworking staff who are focussed on giving you the best experience possible.

I hope that this guide, along with our website, provides you with the information that you need.

If you would like to talk things through with someone, please pop into college or give us a call. Our Admissions Team are ready to give you advice about which course is right for you and how to submit your application.

You may have read about the merger of Jewel & Esk College, Stevenson College Edinburgh and Edinburgh’s Telford College, who will be coming together to form a dynamic new college for the Edinburgh city region in October 2012. This is an exciting development and will open up more opportunities for students. If you join one of our courses for the new session, we hope you will get involved with the Students’ Association and work with us to develop a new college that we can all be proud of.

“ Vocational qualifications prove to an employer that you are capable of taking on a job and doing it successfully. Some cover broad subject areas, others relate to specific skills. They can also help you to get a place at university.”Kenny WilsonQuality & Qualifications Manager

Page 19: Jewel and Esk College Course Guide 2012/13

Most qualifications we offer are accredited and awarded by the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) although we also offer qualifications from other awarding bodies such as City & Guilds, EMTA, COSCA and ILM.

Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA)SQA are responsible for developing and awarding vocational qualifications in Scotland. All SQA vocational qualifications are based on the concept of ‘building up’ to a qualification bit by bit using study units. We offer three different types:

National Qualifications (NQ)A broad range of options, available at a number of levels:

– Access 1, 2, 3

– Intermediate 1, 2

– Higher & Advanced Higher

Higher National Certificate (HNC) and Higher National Diploma (HND)These qualifications are widely respected and valued by employers and recognised by many professional and technical bodies. They are accepted for entry to many degree courses, often directly into 2nd or 3rd year. Both comprise Higher National Units and a graded unit.

Scottish Vocational Qualifications (SVQs)SVQs are designed in consultation with employers and, because they are based on standards set directly by the industry, are a guarantee of ability and competency. They are available to people of all ages and at all stages of their careers and comprise workplace assessed units which are assessed in the workplace or under simulated workplace conditions. SVQ awards are available at five different levels.

Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF)The SCQF is a way of comparing the wide range of Scottish qualifications. It covers achievements such as those from school, college, university, and many work-based qualifications. It does this by giving each qualification a level and a number of credit points. The level of a qualification shows how difficult the learning is. The credit points show how much learning is involved in achieving that qualification.

For more information on The Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework, visit www.scqf.org.uk.

Coming to college can be a challenging experience.

If you have just left school you will be working and studying in an area you have chosen and will be expected to work more independently. Perhaps you have been in employment or bringing up a family and are returning to education but may have concerns about your study skills. Whatever your background, we are here to help you make a success of your studies. We offer support for individuals or small groups in such areas as:

– Taking or making notes

– Writing essays or reports

– Planning your work

– Organising time

– Revision

We also give help in particular skills:

– Numeracy

– Writing, spelling, punctuation and reading

The Learning Support Team are experienced in supporting students with:

– Physical disabilities

– Visual impairments

– Learning difficulties

– Mental health or medical problems

– Hearing impairments

– Specific learning difficulties e.g. Dyslexia, Dyspraxia

Many students’ support needs can be met by appropriate study skills guidance. However, we recognise that some students have particular challenges that require specialist support.

Students with particular needs are offered a specialist assessment leading to a Personal Learning and Support Plan, (PLSP) which details the forms of support that the student will have access to throughout their course.

Whatever your concern, please make contact as early as possible with:

Course fees Full time coursesHNC/HND courses: There is a tuition fee for all full time HNC/HND courses. Scottish and EU students would usually apply for the fees to be paid by the Student Awards Agency for Scotland (SAAS). A part time fee grant may be available from SAAS. Student Support Services will assist with your application to SAAS for tuition fees. Where appropriate Finance will assist you to set up instalment payment plans by Direct Debit for any fees not paid by SAAS.

If you are from elsewhere in the UK you should contact your local education authority for advice and information.

NQ and other non-advanced courses: Most Scottish (and EU) students qualify for fee waiver on non-advanced courses. If you do not qualify for fee waiver, we normally expect you to pay when you enrol. See www.jec.ac.uk for details of our fee instalment policy.

If your employer is paying your fees the Finance team will send you a Mandate Form. You should have your employer complete it and bring it with you when you enrol.

Part time Courses There is a course fee for most part time day and evening courses; however if you or your family are in receipt of a means-tested benefit or low income, a limited number of courses offer a fee waiver.
