NIKKI VELASCO

Dear Readers,

No matter where you reside or where you are capable of going, I want you all to know that the sky’s the limit when it comes to

fashion and street trends. I was born in the small town of Dallas, Texas and have made my way into one of the biggest fashion capitals of the world, New York City. I am a fashion student

dedicated to keeping up with today’s trends and I aspire to become a buyer for a luxury department store someday! Besides the basics, I have always wanted to travel the world and like most of you, life has yet to really begin and the vast world of fashion and culture waits our arrival. From Paris, London, Milan, and of

course New York City, this is your ticket to a first-class flight to jet-set around the globe and see the street wear from some of the most fashionable cities. The streets are your runway! xoxo

Color is always huge for Spring, but this year we’re seeing neon…and lots of it!! Making its way from the rave scene to

runway couture, our sources tell us that the craze is here to stay and will follow through the rest of the year. What’s just as big this

year are all of the music festivals throughout the nation that are making

headlines and cashing in with the thousands of people ready to rage and

dress in their brightest. The ever infamous Electric Daisy Carnival, an annual electronic music festival hosted by

Insomniac Events originated in California, is now making a stop along the way this

Spring to the big apple; New York City. Tickets went on sale last month for the announced two-day event, and sold out

within a record 3 hours. Insomniac Events told us yesterday that due to the high

demand, they have extended the event for us New Yorkers to now be a 3-day festival

(May 18-May20). A 3-day party extravaganza with a line-up including Avicii, Amin Van Buuren, Skrillex,

Afrojack, Alesso, and Calvin Harris just to name a few…I’m ready to give up a month’s worth of shopping to buy my

passes. People are flying from across the country to attend this event which will be hosted at the MetLife stadium. Tickets go on sale this Thursday and it is expected to

sell out once again… Let’s see if Insomniac can keep up with the city that

never sleeps!

I met with Kimberly Mendoza, a local NYC accessories designer. Born and raised in Bergenfield, New Jersey, this small town girl has always had the dream of moving into the big apple and starting her own line. She began working on this in May of 2007 and has successfully begun to launch her own website where she sells knit accessories and handmade jewelry. Her company is known as Ashiszco which her and her group of friends had made up and thought it sounded like a catchy and unique name that suited the urban lifestyle that the brand encapsulates. The products are inspired by the city, the latest fashion trends, and by her boyfriend who is a part-time DJ and student attending Pace University in New York City. She has done previous internships at urban brands such as KarmaLoop. Always dressed to impress, Kim was wearing her favorite Jeffrey Campbell platforms and one of the necklaces from her collection.

What do you want to ultimately do with your company and line?

K: Ultimately I would love to get the name out there first here in New York City and maybe get the attention of some retail stores that would be interested in buying some of my merchandise. KarmaLoop is definitely a place where I would like my products to be sold in. I do both men’s and women’s accessories so I would like to reach both markets. For women’s I specialize in necklaces and bracelets, and for men’s I knit beanies with our trademark logo name.

Where do you get inspiration from?

K: I actually get inspiration from everywhere pretty much, I go to all the crazy festivals like Coachella, Electric Daisy Carnival, and just anywhere that has good vibes, and people who are dressed for the occasion. For my jewelry line I like the bohemian, sort of, indie look so I use a lot of natural elements versus gold and other metals. I like simplicity and quality.

What else do you aspire to do outside of your product line?

K: I actually would also love to work in marketing and advertising because design has always been a passion of mine and with marketing my company, it has really inspired me to maybe pursue a career in that.

It must be hard balancing work, school, and an internship on top of owning your own company, do you get any help?

K: My family and friends are very supportive and so is my boyfriend who helps me with the line a lot. My friends are always willing to help me when I’m doing photo-shoots or making a new layout for my website. I think the hardest part is finding time for myself because I’m the kind of person who likes to constantly be busy and on my feet.

I had the luxury of working with designer and stylist Kimberly M and we took our model Jasmine and restyled her everyday girly and laid back look

and added a touch of urban grunge-inspired elements. Shot at a local studio on 42nd Street on the Upper West side of New York City, we had a blast mixing up her style with some of our

favorite pieces including Jeffrey Campbell studded platforms and a pair of distressed high-waist jean

shorts.
