Jesus and the Samaritan Woman

John 4:1-26

Introduction• When we talk about Jesus

and the Samaritan woman we must understand a couple of things:1. This is year 1 of Jesus’ ministry.2. Jesus traveling through Samaria in order to avoid the Pharisees.3. Most pious Jews avoided traveling through Samaria because of their prejudice.

What does Jesus say about worship?

• 21 Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe Me, the hour is coming when you will neither on this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, worship the Father. 22 You worship what you do not know; we know what we worship, for salvation is of the Jews. 23 But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. 24 God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” (John 4:21-24)

What is to worship in Spirit?• To worship in Spirit simply

means that an individual has the desire to follow God to do what is right.•Naaman (2 Kings 5:9-15)• The Athenians (Acts 17:22)

What is to worship in Truth?

• To worship in TRUTH means to worship according to to the WILL of GOD via the Bible.

• The Bereans- Acts 17:11-These were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so.

• Jesus’ admonition-You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me. John 5:39

Those who Worshipping in Spirit

• The Good Samaritan.(Luke 10:30-37)• The ten Lepers: only the Samaritan came back to

thank Jesus. (Luke 17:11-19)• The diciples of John become Christians and begin

to worship in “TRUTH”. (Acts 19:1-7)• Cornelious converts to Christianism and worships

God in “TRUTH”. (Acts 10; 1, 2)• Apollos is instructed in more exactly and comes to

the “TRUTH”. (Acts 18:24-28)

Those who Worship in Truth• The Jews worshipped what they knew, but without the Spirit.

(John 4:22)• The Pharisees, the scribes, and the priests knew the TRUTH,

but they did not practice it. The parable of the pharisee and the publican. (Luke 18:9-14)

• The interpreters of the law. (Luke 11:46)• The Jews looked to place a stumbling block for Jesus because

they of political jealousy and not according to the scripture. (Mat. 27:16-19; 21:23-27)

• Annanias y Saphira. (Acts 5:1-11)• Demas (2Tim. 4:10)• Diotrephes (3Juan 9)• Judas Iscariot. 30 pieces of silver. (Mat. 26:14-16)

• We have to pull the speck out of our own eyes first. (Mat. 7:3; Luke 6:41)

• We need to love God with all our strength, with all our mind and with all our heart. (Mark 12:30)

• We need to be doers of the word and not just hearers. (Santiago 1:22)
