Covenant

• An agreement between parties.

• Where one party pledges to bless or serve another party

• They are either bilateral or unilateral in Scripture.

Covenant

• NATO: Multi-lateral

• God’s Covenant with Noah and humanity (Gen. 9:9-17)

The Covenant of Works

• First covenant between God and human beings (Genesis 2:15-17) (Hosea 6:7)

• It promised eternal life

• The condition was perfect obedience

The Covenant of Works

• Two key things about this covenant

– In one sense it is still in effect -also called the Covenant of Creation. (Romans 3:23)

– We have been affected by the failure of the first humans.

The Covenant of Works

• We inherited their guilt (Rom. 5:12, 18)

• We inherited their corruption (Ps. 51:1-5)

• We come into this world guilty, corrupt, and we will not keep the covenant of works

The Covenant of Grace

• The most glorious covenant between God and man

• Hebrews 9:16—established, ratified and confirmed through the blood of Jesus

Works (Rom. 5:18-19)

• Jesus Died ion our place (Heb. 9:14, 26-28)

• Jesus offers benefits of the covenant through faith (Heb. 9:15-16; Rom. 3:23-26)

The Covenant of Grace• Jesus make us new creations and

delivers us from corruption

– The law of God is put into our minds

– The law of God is written on our hearts

– We have a relationship with God

– The Covenant is permanent and irrevocable (Heb. 9:12)
