OPPORTUNITYI SAW AN OPPORTUNITY TO DESIGN A GLUCOSE MONITOR THAT WOULD LIVE ON KEYS SINCE THEY ARE AN ITEM MOST PEOPLE HAVE WHILE ON-THE-GO. DURING MY
INTERVIEWS I OBSERVED PEOPLE FIDGETING WITH THEIR KEYS, WHICH IS WHAT INSPIRED MY INTERACTION AND FORM OF MY FINAL GLUCOSE MONITOR DESIGN.

SECURITY SCARF • THESIS SPRING 2013
INSPIRATION
DESIGN A PRODUCT FOR PEOPLE WHO ARE MUGGED OR PICKPOCKETED OF THEIR PERSONAL BELONGINGS
“I CHOSE TO FOCUS MY THESIS ON CREATING A PRODUCT THAT CAN DISCRETELY HIDE ONE’S PERSONAL BELONGINGS. I SAW THIS AS AN OPPORTUNITY BECAUSE DURING THE 2012-2013 SCHOOL YEAR AT SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY, 17 MUGGINGS OCCURRED ON AND AROUND CAMPUS. I WANTED TO DESIGN NOT ONLY FOR THE SAFETY OF THE STUDENTS, BUT DESIGN TO INSTILL A SENSE OF CONFIDENCE AND SECURITY WHEN ONE LEAVES THEIR HOME.”

INTERVIEWS
“I feel more vulnerable than ever when leaving my house to walk to campus. I sometimes leave my valuables at home like my laptop or wallet in fear that I could be the next victim.”
- Ayla, Senior Fashion Design Student
I INTERVIEWED 50+ PEOPLE WHO WERE A MIX OF SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY STUDENTS, PROFESSORS AND RESIDENTS OF THE OFF CAMPUS NEIGHBORHOODS. I WANTED TO GET AN IDEA OF WHAT THEY CARRY WITH THEM ON-THE-GO AND WHY. I ALSO WANTED TO KNOW WHAT ITEMS WERE THE MOST VALUABLE TO THEM AND GET A SENSE OF THEIR REACTION TO CRIME IN SYRACUSE. THE MOST POPULAR NECESSITY ITEMS WHILE ON THE GO WERE A CELLPHONE, DEBIT/CREDIT CARD, HOUSE KEYS AND CAR KEYS. EVERYONE EXPRESSED INTEREST IN HAVING A NEW PRODUCT THAT COULD DISCRETELY HIDE THEIR VALUABLES IN A FASHIONABLE WAY.
WHY NOT STORE THINGS IN THE ITEMS WE WEAR?
DISCRETE + HIDDEN • SENSE OF MYSTERY • NOT TYPICAL STORAGE • HEIGHTENED SENSE OF SECURITY
THROUGH OBSERVATIONS I NOTICED STUDENTS ON CAMPUS STORING THEIR PERSONAL BELONGINGS IN THEIR CLOTHING SUCH AS TUCKING MONEY IN THEIR SHOE OR THEIR HOUSE KEYS UP THEIR SLEEVE. THE MOST INTRIGUING OBSERVATION I HAD WAS OF PEOPLE STORING THEIR CELL PHONE’S IN THEIR SCARVES. SINCE SCARVES ARE VERY TRENDY AND ARE A NECESSITY DEPENDING ON THE WEATHER, I CHOSE TO IMPLEMENT A SERIES OF POCKETS WITHIN SCARVES TO ADD MORE VALUE TO A TYPICAL SCARF.

“I like that these scar ves can be adjusted to CREATE
MULIPLE FUNCIONS . I don’t find the need to store things in any place other than
my pockets.”“I’m not sure if ZIPPERS
are the best type of closure for me. I CAN’T ACCESS my
things FAST ENOUGH or discretely.”
“I like the idea of adding TEXTURE to the scar ves. It adds a sense of VISUAL
DISTRACTION .”
“This scarf has one pocket. I WISH THERE WERE
MULTIPLE HIDDEN POCKETS . I’m also left handed so it’d be nice to have
POCKET PLACEMENT easy access for righties or lefties.”
“What if there were scar ves for DIFFERENT SEASONS? It’s often RAINY in Syracuse.”
USER TESTINGTHROUGH USER TESTING I CHOSE TO FOCUS ON WOMEN AS MY TARGET AUDIENCE SINCE THEY FOUND MORE OF A NEED TO HAVE A PRODUCT THAT CAN DISCRETELY HIDE THEIR VALUABLES
IN A FASHIONABLE WAY. THROUGH USER TESTING I ALSO GAINED INSIGHT TO APPLY TO MY FINAL DESIGNS.
GradientSECURITY SCARF
Made from roving yarn, this scarf has a textural gradient with a
combination of loose to tight stitches. Tight stitches indicate where the
pocket is located. The gradient of stitches allows the user to feel their
way to the pocket location. The location of the pocket can be used to
warm one’s hands to make it less obvious that one may be retrieving
personal belongings. Within the main pocket is a hidden pocket that is
used to store valuables. Belongings slip into hidden pocket with ease.
Since the scarf is a circle scarf, there is only a single pocket. One who is
a lefty or righty user can access the pocket from either side. (All scar ves
made by hand. I taught myself how to sew with a machine and knit)

ResistantSECURITY SCARF
Made from nylon with a polyester lining, this water resistant circle scarf
is designed to be worn during rainy weather, physical activities (ex.
snowboarding), or when around areas with water (ex. beach). It is also
ideal for tourism since weather can be unpredictable while sight seeing.
Not only during rainy weather would one’s valuables be protected in
the damp weather, but the scarf can be pulled over the head to function
and wear as a hood. The scarf is also adjustable to be worn loosely or
can be tightened to bring personal belongings closer to one’s body. This
allows a user to feel their valuables close to their body, which creates a
heightened sense of security. The pocket on the inside is deep with an
open top for quick and easy access. The pocket is secured when cord
is pulled tight. It also blends in with the stripped lining. Since the scarf
is a circle scarf, there is only a single pocket. One who is a lefty or right
user can simply turn the scarf around in access the pocket. (All scar ves
made by hand. I taught myself how to sew with a machine and knit)

OrigamiSECURITY SCARF
Made from cotton fabric, this scarf is made up of origami ‘for tune teller’
shapes to create a visual texture. The upper par t of the scarf is made
up of multiple colors to attract one’s attention to the upper por tion
of the body while the user retrieves personal belongings in pockets
located behind the white areas. The idea is to create a visual distraction
to make it less obvious while one retrieves personal belongings. There
are multiple levels of pockets to consider keeping belongings separate.
There are also multiple pockets to consider lefty and righty users. The
pockets are fairly deep, are open on top and made from stretchy jersey
knit to allow for quick and easy access of belongings. (All scar ves made
by hand. I taught myself how to sew with a machine and knit)

ArtichokeSECURITY SCARF
Made from felt and jersey knit fabric , this scarf was inspired by the
way a plant blossoms in sunlight and the way a peacock attracts
mates when opening their feathers. The idea is to create a “sleight
of hand” illusion where one can attract a passerby’s attention with
the bright yellow color on one side while retr ieving their personal
belongings on the opposite side. Pockets are located within petal
forms and are held together with snaps. Multiple pockets allow the
option to keep valuables separate from one another. There are also
multiple pockets to consider both lefty and r ighty users. (All scar ves
made by hand. I taught myself how to sew with a machine and knit)
