For more than a century, the papacy was troubled by its physical separation from Rome and by rival Popes claiming authority.

From Rome to Avignon› In they days of the early Christian Church
Rome› a symbol for Christians.› The Bishop of Rome was the most powerful
bishop.› In 1309, French Pope, Clement V, moved
the seat of the papacy from Rome to Avignon.

The Great Schism Pope Gregory XI went back to Rome in
1377. For the next 40 years, the church was
divided by the Great Schism. They called Popes at Avignon
“Antipopes” because they were not recognized as a real Popes.
