GOD’S ACTIONS NOW When Jews celebrate the Passover, they always tell the story of the Exodus in present terms, as if they themselves experienced those events: when we were prisoners in Egypt; when God brought us out of slavery and through the waters of the sea. We would do well to follow their example and see the works of Jesus and his sacrifice as being in the present, as hap-pening to us now. We believe that Christ’s work, his teachings, and his sacrifice on the cross were not just for his followers in the past, but for all people at all times. When we think of this in our prayers, we become one in faith with that great cloud of witnesses, the saints. We have been striving through Lent to repent of our sins and failings, and to follow Jesus more closely. Today in the story of the woman caught in adultery, we see Jesus forgiving the woman, saving her from a horrible death, and urging her not to sin any more. This is new, and brings out something for which the law had not allowed—forgiveness. Of course one can sin no more if one is dead, caught in one’s sins forever. But Jesus introduces the concepts of forgiveness and reconcilia-tion. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Catherine’s Letters to the Future

Again, in the latter half of March 1376, Catherine wrote to a cardinal: “I say you are a pillar to keep this bride’s home safe. So you must be strong, not weak; for weak things topple with the slightest wind—whether that wind is difficulty, or some wrong that may be done to us, or too much of the world’s abundance and pros-perity, pleasure and grandeur.” In that same letter, she seems to offer advice to Catholics tempted to give up on the Church, saying we must ”invest our affection, our desire, our love in something stronger than ourselves—I mean in God, the source of all strength. He is our God who loved us without being loved.” “And once we have discovered and experienced such a gentle love, strong beyond all other strength, we cannot cling to or desire any other love but him.” she continues. By Kathryn Jean Lopez, Angelus, Aug. 17-24-31,2018, Vol. 3 #28

DidYouKnow? Use creative problem solving to find new ways to protect children . n the Protecting God’s Children program, adults learn how to identify potential signs of abuse and how to pick up on red flag behaviors that indicate a potential predator, even be-fore abuse happens. Another tool in the arsenal of child protection is creative problem solving, where adults learn to think outside the box when it comes to finding solutions for protecting children. One very ef-fective creative problem-solving tool is to refocus the group’s thinking, turning it away from the perceived “problem” and productively more toward a collabora-tive solution. Consider the challenge of how to deal with registered sex offenders whose children attend the school or participate in religious education at the parish. Rather than discuss the topic, the leader might ask participants to finish the following sentences, “Wouldn’t it be awful if…” and “Wouldn’t it be wonder-ful if…” Once everyone has provided responses, the group can look through the answers to find connecting themes that may provide a previously untried solution.
