Shell Valentine CardExhibition
Monday 11 February - Saturday 2 MarchPreview: Monday 11 February 5.30pm - 7pm
Shell’s interest in Valentine cards began in 1938with the innovative idea of sending Valentinegreetings to lady customers. The cards weredesigned by artists of the day and carried wittyjokes and rhymes on motoring and petrol themes.
This exhibition traces the heart-strewn history ofthe Valentine from the early 19th century onwards;it has romance, sentiment and gushing sinceritywith the liberal use of satin ribbon and gilt cupids. In contrast there are also satirical cartoons andcruel verse, expressing the bitterness, anddisenchantment of loves lost.
Paintings from the EdgeGraham Tovey
Monday 4 March - Saturday 16 MarchPreview: Monday 4 March 5.30pm - 7pm
Predominantly a landscape painter, GrahamTovey’s influences come from Turner and theEnglish tradition of modern landscape painting.
Mainly working in oils, applying the paint with aknife, this process allows him to execute the workwith speed and spontaneity, often returningrepeatedly to the same sites in both Jersey andFrance – understanding the place throughrepeated dialogue.
The works in this exhibition will concentrate on thecoast of Jersey and Finistère in Brittany, France.

Monday 18 March - Saturday 6 AprilPreview: Monday 18 March 5.30pm - 7pm
Since moving to Jersey ten years ago, Julia Hugohas found herself continuously exposed to anendless amount of equisite visual stimuli. Theimages in this exhibition are all references toobjects and experiences relating to life in Jersey.
The process used to make each piece involves alayering of images and textures to reach a finalcompleted image. As with most things, it is thevarious layers which create depth and meaning.

Paper is a unique material. It can be transformedfrom two dimensions to three without anythingmore than a fold.
It is perfect for folding: it is flexible; it retains a fold; itcan be opened out and refolded withoutdeteriorating.
This body of work investigates space, containment, materiality, text, process, repetition, light, and poetics through the meditative thoughtand movement arising from folding paper.
