Was known for being particularly mean and rigid to his actors and creative team.
Known for coming up with choreography that matched the characters. Conceived the idea for On The Town, based loosely on a ballet, and
choreographed. Won a Tony for Best Choreography Choreographed the King and I, featuring the “March of the Siamese
Children” and the “Shall We Dance?” sequence. Choreographed The Pajama Game
Directed/Choreographed Call Me Madam Directed/Co-Choreographed (with Bob Fosse) Bells Are Ringing
Directed/choreographed West Side Story, choreographed and co-directed (with Robert Wise) the film version. Won the Tony for Best Choreography.
Won the Oscar (with Robert Wise) for Best Direction Directed/choreographed Gypsy
Worked as a “show doctor” on such shows as A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum and Funny Girl
Directed/choreographed Fiddler on the Roof won 2 Tonys for Best Direction and Best Choreography
Directed Jerome Robbins’ Broadway (a revue of his most famous works). The show won Best Musical that year and earned Robbins his fifth Tony
award for Best Direction
