GERMPLASM COLLECTING MISSION M ZAMBIA

June, 1980

S. Appa Rao

Tne germplasm collecting mission to Zambia was organised and effected in close collaboration with FAO/IBPZR and the Ministry of A~riculture and Water Development of the Republic of Zambia during June 1980, The collect- in?, team consisted of Dr. S, Appa Rao, Botanist, GRU, ICRISAT, Dr, R.Y. Arora, FIU consultant and Messers. Sinkale, Nulyate and N~ala representatives of the Ministry of Apriculture and Elater Development, Republic of Zambia, During this mission, the eastern and northern and parts of central provinces were covered to collect ICRISAT mandate crops and other crops like maize, beans, cowpeas, rice, cassava and other locally important crops. In this mission, 1010 samples of different crops were callccted. R e ICRISAT mandate crops collected werc 237 sorghum, A3 groundnut, 25 pearl millet, 21 pigeonpea and 107 finger millet samplcs. $11 these samples were threshed and processed with the help of Miss. R.Y. Chungu and Mr. A,J, Prior of Elount Makulu Research Station, All the snnples of ICRISAT nandate crops were divided into three sets and one set was brought to ICRISAT leaving one set each to FA0 and the Republic of 7anbia.

2 . INTRODUCTION tND OBJECTIVES

Zambia figured in the priority list of germplasm collection as there were no accessions of ICRISiZT nandatz crops except seven of sorghun. The shifting cultivation practiced in Zambia is threatening the wild and weedy relatives of the crops. Millet and sorghum are inportant subsistence crops which are grown over an esti~ated area of 130,5 and 7 7 , 6 thoua.md hectares annually. Groundnut is an important cash crop which is grown extensively, I he objectives of the mission were:

1, to collect traditional cultivars of ICRISAT nandate crops and their wild relatives,

2. to obtain an understanding of the crop variability, and

3. to study the agricultural practices in the crops of specific interest to ICRISAT
