' ' ' ' Words by Naomi Attwood We stalked the LA designer known for his outré collections and musical muses such as M.I.A, Santogold and Bjork while he was publicising his A/W collection for Adidas. With his pop-culture themed clothes, he’s a rare treat in the all too often misogynist world of fashion. Making women look powerful and feel good about themselves gets a gold star in our book. What are you wearing right now? Do you live in Adidas? Well, right now I’m wearing a big t-shirt with the seven dwarves on it as its nearly 1am and I’m planning on going to bed right after this and its hot as the Dickens here in LA even at night as its full-on summer. When designing sportswear do you feel that you have to tone down your creations or do the limitations you're faced with aid creativity? Oh I don’t really have any restrictions other than my imagination! When I’m designing the collection I constantly think about how does this relate to Adidas and the brand – at the same time I’m stretching and broadening the belief of what both can be. Do you imagine that people would wear the collection to exercise in? Or is that missing the point entirely? Everything is possible! Yes, people have been spotted all over New York City Gyms working out in various pieces and they have been spotted wearing it out to clubs – I love that the clothes can have different meanings for different people. I design them to be at times glamorous and something you can dance and have fun in without feeling too precious. Do you have a favourite piece from the collection? Which one and why? The winged attitude [trainers] is kinda my baby – I feel like its an icon and retains the perfect balance between strikingly new and utterly familiar. I think that is a hard balance to achieve and that’s why I’m so proud of it. I love the harem trousers. However I don't have very long legs. If not Adidas trainers, what would you advise to pair with these? Well first of all, pull the legs up onto your calves – its much cooler looking that way and if your legs are short it helps to make them look better on. Secondly I say high tops and for this I’d do my three-tongue attitudes – but maybe I am biased. The model Amelie is amazing! I heard that she is a stylist's assistant. Is that true? How did you come to cast her? Wow you do your homework don’t you?! Yes she is beautiful and I discovered her in Las Vegas as she was working at an inspiring and cool store called Fruition there. So when I came to think about the person who would embody this collection and all the various inspirations I had she was my ideal. SO I called her up and flew her out to LA and the rest is history! If you made a mixtape of all the pop star girls that you dress, from Madonna to M.I.A to Santogold (and more) it would sound pretty good! Somehow I don't think this would be the case for all designers. Do you have a strict vetting policy for who gets the Jeremy Scott pieces? I love the mixtape concept – its funny because I often think about what if I could do a music festival with all my pop stars and how the line up would go! But yes I only dress people that inspire me and whom I truly love and believe in. The finished product has a big part to play on the music scene. How about the other way round though, how does music inspire you and inform the creative process? I am absolutely inspired by music and performers. Lots of what I do is considering what my pop star friends need when performing. They need something that’s exciting to wear – comfortable to move in and something that they don’t have to think about when they are on stage and that will look great in pictures. Ultimately, who doesn’t want to look like a rock star? If you've bought one of Jeremy's fit tracksuits, then you'll need some music to dance around to while wearing it.
