Why does efficiency matter?

• The NHS needs to make unprecedented savings up to 2015 and beyond.

• As the Government tries to shift more care into the community, the pressure facing hospitals will be even greater.

• Improvements in hospital efficiency in England during previous times of financial constraint have come from treating more patients, as well as from saving money.

• There is scope for the considerable variation in performance across English hospitals to be reduced

• Commissioners should focus on how they can incentivise local hospitals into adopting good practice.

• Merging hospitals will not automatically lead to efficiency savings

• The report reaffirms the crucial role that good management plays in achieving high productivity.
