Biography

Pianist, organist, and trumpeter, Jennifer Pos only needs one arm to execute sweet sounds inspired her favorite rock, blues, and jazz artists. She was born missing her left arm below the elbow but it certainly does not slow her down. She can be recognized by the sound of soulful organ pads, bluesy piano and trumpet playing, and tasty synth licks. It is easy to tell that Jennifer has been most influenced by Wynton Kelly, Red Garland, Dr. John, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, and the Beatles. Her playing is usually laid back and behind the beat consisting of many blues and minor pentatonic licks.

Jennifer began studying piano at age 8 and trumpet at age 11 in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia. In high school she played piano and trumpet in various jazz and pop groups as well as participating in Nova Scotia Honour Jazz and attending jazz summer camps at Acadia University in Wolfville, Nova Scotia, and University of Louisville in Kentucky. She also played pipe organ and piano for services at Pictou United Church. Both of her parents are music teachers and piano players, so she always knew that music would be a huge part of her life.

In 2015, Jennifer graduated from Humber College’s Bachelor of Music program. Throughout her time at Humber College, Jennifer took the opportunity to explore as many styles of music as possible. She has always had a passion for rock, blues, funk, classical and jazz but she also enjoyed being exposed to styles of music that she had not previously had any experience playing, including Indo-jazz (a fusion of North Indian classical music and jazz), Cuban music, hand drumming from various parts of Africa, Cuba, and Brazil, and modern jazz. Throughout her time at Humber, Jennifer played in several bands including “The Close Encounters” (pop), “Edgewater Hotel” (psychedelic rock), “Chelsea McBride’s Socialist Night School” (modern jazz/big band), and “Hannaford Youth Band” (brass band).

Currently, Jennifer can be found leading and playing keyboards in the “Jenn Pos Band” (rock), playing keyboards in “Tasha & The Sweet Talkers” (pop), playing trumpet in “May You Bury Me” (soul/country rock), and playing trumpet at “Medieval Times Dinner & Tournament.” The “Jenn Pos Band” is a six piece rock band that plays original music inspired by Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, and The Beatles. Jennifer’s compositions are also influenced by her experiences playing with Ravi Naimpally’s and Justin Gray’s Indo-jazz ensembles at Humber. Jennifer plays piano, organ, keyboards, and synth in the “Jenn Pos Band.” They recorded an EP in 2014/2015 entitled, “There’s No Knowing Where You Might Be Swept Off To.”
