The talented Jefferson

• Jefferson:– Was a lawyer– Interested in

architecture of Greece and Rome

– Assisted in designing the capital

• More talents –– Skilled violinist,

horseman, amateur scientist and devoted reader.

He wanted a nation of small independent farmers. He believed strongly in a

Napoleon and the big Purchase

• France was involved in a costly war with England.

• Jefferson wanted more land for farmers so the cities would not be as crowded as Europe had been.

• These two interests resulted in the Louisiana Purchase for a cool $15 million dollars. Now everyone was happy.

And Napoleon could continue his battle with those pesky British.

What is Jefferson going to do with all of that land?

• Send Lewis and Clark to study and learn has much about the land, plants, and animals.

• Lewis was to lead and Clark’s job was to map out the journey.

• Begin in St. Louis and find a water route across the continent.

• Luckily Lewis and Clark met Sacagawea who helped them communicate with the Shoshone Indians they met. She also knew the land.

• Zebulon Pike also helped by exploring the Arkansas River and the Rocky Mountains.

• Pike’s Peak is named after Zebulon.

Jefferson still has to deal with France and Britain.

• Trading was a way of life for Americans.

• Embargo Act of 1807 – closed ports to Britain and American ships they could no longer sail to foreign ports.

• Farmers and shippers were losing money.

• James Madison became president. Congress repealed the act.

• Trade with any country but France and Britain.

• That was not a good decision either.

• Britain continued to interfere with American sailors and the impressment of US citizens.

Trouble with Indians continue

Tecumseh wanted to unite all Indians to save their land.

Miama, Delaware, and Potawatomi tribes agreed to sell 3 million acres of land with the signing of the Treaty of Wayne.

Tecumseh was angry so he began to recruit tribes. During this time the Shawnees were defeated at the Battle of Tippecanoe.

Indians ran to Canada and were welcomed by the British. Now they were allies.

Henry Clay and the Westernerscalled War Hawks demanded war.As a result, Congress declared war on Britain on June 18, 1812.

War of 1812

• Britain agreed to not interfere with America anymore. However…• They won the war against France – now it was America’s turn.• US navy was weak, poorly trained and equipped.• Inexperienced officers• But…

– US ships were faster– Valuable experience from pirates– Constitution and the United States won naval victories– Oliver Hazard Perry went out to meet the British ship on Lake Erie.

After two hours, Perry destroyed the British ship and declared “We met the enemy and they are ours.”

• Britain burned the Capitol building.

• Attacked Fort McHenry.• Francis Scott Key watched the

battle from a British ship. He could see the huge American flag and wrote our national anthem.

• British were defeated at the Battle of Lake Champlain.

• British put their interest in the Port of New Orleans.

• 7,500 British troops• Andrew Jackson led an

American army of riflemen.• Americans lost 71 men to

2,000 British soldiers.• Battle of New Orleans made

Jackson a hero.• However, the battle should

never have taken place.• Treaty of Ghent was signed

two weeks earlier.
