RED RAIDERS CLOSE HOMESTAND WITH JEANNINE MCHANEY MEMORIAL CLASSICTexas Tech closes its nine-game homestand, its longest of the season, this weekend with the fourth-annual Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic. The Red Raiders, riding a three-game winning streak, will open the four-day tournament against UT Arlington and Northern Colorado on Thursday evening before facing New Mexico State Friday evening. Tech closes the weekend with a Sunday doubleheader against Northern Colorado and Abilene Christian. The tournament will feature 11 games altogether at Rocky Johnson Field, beginning with Thursday night’s doubleheader which begins with a 5:30 p.m. first pitch against UT Arlington.

ON THE HORIZONTexas Tech returns to the road next weekend, taking part in tournaments at Cal State Fullerton and San Diego State where the Red Raiders will play a total of seven games over a four-day stretch. Tech returns to Rocky Johnson Field on March 19 to start an eight-game homestand with a doubleheader against North Texas.

ABOUT JEANNINE MCHANEY - THE ARCHITECT OF WOMEN’S ATHLETICS AT TEXAS TECHJeannine McHaney, long considered the driving force behind women’s athletics at Texas Tech, is the namesake of this week-end’s tournament which, in its fourth year, has become an annual tradition at Rocky Johnson Field. McHaney joined the Texas Tech faculty in 1966 in a number of roles as she was a professor in the physical education department in addition to serving as the university’s director of women’s intramural sports and the school’s first volleyball coach, a position she held for nine seasons. Following the establishment of the Women’s Athletic Department in 1975, McHaney was selected as the pro-gram’s first athletics director until the men’s and women’s departments eventually combined. She remained a top athletics administrator throughout the next two decades until her passing in 1994. Each year, a student-athlete from each women’s program is selected as a Jeannine McHaney Scholar with one of those eventually being crowned the McHaney Scholar Student-Athlete of the Year. The award winner exemplifies the standards established by McHaney in the areas of academic achievement and athletic excellence as well as service to the community and the university.

INSIDE THE SERIES• Texas Tech and UT Arlington will be facing each other exactly two weeks after their first meeting this season where the Red Raiders took a 4-1 victory to open the UTA Hilton Invitational. The victory improved Tech to 9-4 all-time against the Mav-ericks, who will be traveling to Lubbock for tournament action for the third-straight season. Tech is 4-1 against the Mavericks at Rocky Johnson Field as the Red Raiders split a two-game set in 2008 before sweeping a three-game series in 2012. • Northern Colorado will be traveling to Lubbock for the second-straight season this weekend as the Bears took part in 2013 version of the Texas Tech Invitational. It was Northern Colorado’s first ever trip to the South Plains at the time. Tech, backed by a late rally in the bottom of the seventh, topped the Bears, 8-7, last year in Lubbock before run-ruling Northern Colorado earlier this season during the Troy Cox Classic hosted by New Mexico State. The Red Raiders are 4-1 all-time against Northern Colorado with wins in 2005-06 with the lone loss coming in on March 15, 2009. • Despite allowing a late-inning comeback earlier this season against New Mexico State, Texas Tech has traditionally con-trolled the series with the Aggies as the Red Raiders lead 21-11 all-time with a 10-2 advantage in games played in Lubbock. Tech has won eight of the last 11 meetings between the two schools who previously met Feb. 16 this year in Las Cruces to wrap the Troy Cox Classic. The Aggies, behind a six-run fifth inning, rallied to take an 8-6 victory over the Red Raiders. • Abilene Christian and Texas Tech will renew their series against each other this weekend for the first time since 1998 as ACU is currently in its first season as a Division-I opponent as part of the Southland Conference. The Red Raiders are 8-0 all-time against the Wildcats, including a 4-0 record in games played in Lubbock. The two teams were originally scheduled to face each this past Sunday to conclude the Texas Tech Invitational but cold and icy conditions forced the game to be cancelled.

HAYS SET TO FACE FORMER ASSISTANT FOR SECOND TIME THIS SEASONFor the second time already this season, Texas Tech head coach Shanon Hays will look across to the opposite dugout and see his former assistant Kristie Fox sitting there. Fox, who was an assistant coach with the Red Raiders from 2010-12, is in her sec-ond season as the head coach at UT Arlington. Tech and UTA opened the UTA Hilton Invitational against each other on Feb. 20 with the Red Raiders taking a 4-1 victory that improved Hays to 2-0 all-time against his former assistant. Fox is assisted by another familiar face in Andy Jarvis, who was the volunteer assistant baseball coach at Tech from 2008-12.

NEWS & NOTES FROM AROUND THE DIAMOND• Texas Tech’s 13-6 record through the first four weeks of the season marks its best start since 2012 when the Red Raiders were 14-5 over the first 19 games of the season. • If the Red Raiders manage to navigate through this weekend undefeated, Texas Tech’s 18-6 record would be its best start to a season since the 2011 club won its first 24 games. • The Red Raiders have been in nearly every game this season as five of Texas Tech’s six losses have come by two runs or less. • Texas Tech has traditionally found success in home non-conference games under head coach Shanon Hays as the Red Raiders are 63-6 in such contests over the past four-plus seasons. Hays’ .913 winning percentage is the highest for any Tech coach all-time in home non-conference games. • Part of Texas Tech’s success this year has stemmed from its work in the circle as the Red Raiders have totaled a 2.09 ERA this year that currently ranks fifth currently in the Big 12 Conference. It is the lowest ERA through 19 games for the Tech pitching staff since 2010 when the Red Raiders totaled a 2.07 ERA to go along with a 17-2 record.• Texas Tech is the only Big 12 program with two pitchers ranked among the top four in the Big 12 in ERA so far this season. Gretchen Aucoin leads the league with a 0.76 ERA while Brittany Talley is fourth with a 1.27 ERA of her own.• Texas Tech’s strikeout numbers are the best through 19 games in pitching coach Aly Sartini’s tenure as the Red Raiders have combined for 113 strikeouts this season which ranks fifth in the Big 12 entering this weekend. • Texas Tech has held opponents to two or less runs nine times already this season as the Red Raiders have gone 7-2 in those contests. Tech has not allowed an opponent to score more than two runs in each of its last five games.• The Red Raiders have started games well this year, plating at least one run in the opening frame nine times so far this season. Texas Tech is currently 8-1 in those games with the lone loss coming in the Feb. 7 season opener against Akron. • Texas Tech has scored 63 of its 97 runs this season in the first three innings with 21 of those coming in the opening frame. • Texas Tech enters this weekend ranked second in the Big 12 with 33 stolen bases already this season. It marks the most stolen bases ever for a Tech club under Shanon Hays in the first 19 games of a season. • Texas Tech is one of just two Big 12 programs to have two players with 10 stolen bases already this year as Sydni Emanuel has swiped 14 while Lea Hopson has totaled 10 through the first 19 games of the season. • The Red Raiders currently rank fourth in the Big 12 with 97 runs scored so far this season. Texas Tech has scored in tradi-tional ways this year, though, as its 14 home runs are the fewest through 19 games for a Shanon Hays team. • A year after breaking the school record for doubles, Texas Tech is once again one of the top teams in the Big 12 for the category as the Red Raiders have totaled a 25 doubles through the first four weekends of the season. Oklahoma is the only conference school with more doubles this season as the Sooners have totaled 33 in 19 games thus far. • Texas Tech has already thrown out six runners attempting to steal this season, just one shy of its total from the entire 2013 season. Brittany Lee leads the Red Raiders with four runners caught stealing while Kady Crow and Susan Welborn have both thrown out one runner each as well.

THIS WEEK IN THE BIG 12

QUICK HOPS FOR THE RED RAIDERS• Gretchen Aucoin is once again the Big 12 leader in ERA entering this weekend as she has recorded a 0.76 ERA in 36.2 innings pitched this year. She is the only conference pitcher with an ERA under 1.00 so far as Oklahoma State’s Simone Free-man is second in the league with a 1.09 ERA. • Aucoin enters this weekend needing just one more save to match the Texas Tech single-season and career records. Au-coin, who has three saves this season and five over her career, is one save shy of Erin Crawford’s single-season record from 2006. Crawford (2003-06), Amanda Renfro (1998-01) and Julie Hauck (2004-06) share the career mark with six saves.• Brittany Talley is off to her best start to a season since her 2011 freshman campaign as the senior is a perfect 5-0 with a 1.27 ERA that ranks fourth in the Big 12 entering this weekend. She currently ranks among the conference leaders in wins, innings pitched, games started and opponent batting average. • Talley recorded her 40th career victory last Saturday in Texas Tech’s rout over Rhode Island. The Little Elm, Texas native is one of just five players to ever reach 40 wins in a career, joining the likes of Amanda Renfro (1998-01), Ashly Jacobs (2007-10), Erin Crawford (2003-06) and fellow teammate Cara Custer (2012-present). • Sydni Emanuel has reached base in all but one game this season as the freshman enters this weekend having reached safely in 16-straight contests which matches Lea Hopson for the longest streak this season.• Once reaching base, Emanuel has been a threat to opposing teams as the freshman has recorded 14 stolen bases so far which ranks third currently in the Big 12. It is the most stolen bases for a Red Raider through 19 games since Ashley Parker also totaled 14 in 2006. Parker went on to set a Texas Tech school record with 34 stolen bases later that season.• Cassie McClure is coming off a near record performance last Saturday as the freshman connected on a pair of home runs and seven RBI in the first inning alone against Rhode Island. She followed up with another 2-for-3 performance later that afternoon against Sam Houston State where she added another RBI. • McClure enters this weekend tied for fourth in the Big 12 with a team-leading 17 RBI. She is one of four Red Raiders with at least 10 RBI this season, joining Kierra Miles (13), Lea Hopson (12) and Kristi Belshe (10). • Hopson joins Emanuel as the only Red Raiders to reach base in 18 of 19 games this year. The junior college transfer cur-rently ranks fifth in the Big 12 in stolen bases as she is a perfect 10-for-10 on attempts this season.• Samantha Camello boasts the longest starting streak for a young Red Raider team as the sophomore has started in all 715games of her Texas Tech career. Camello currently ranks third on the team with a .349 batting average.

TEXAS TECH SET TO FACE UTA, NORTHERN COLORADO AND NEW MEXICO STATE ONCE AGAINThis weekend’s tournament will pit the Red Raiders against UT Arlington, Northern Colorado and New Mexico State for the second time already this season as Texas Tech is 2-1 against the field this season. The Red Raiders run-ruled Northern Colo-rado, 12-4, on Feb. 14 at the Troy Cox Classic before falling 8-6 in a come-from-behind victory for host New Mexico State just two days later. Tech rebounded the following weekend by opening the UTA Hilton Invitational with a 4-1 victory over the host Mavericks. The Red Raiders were scheduled to face their other opponent this weekend, Abilene Christian, last weekend during the Texas Tech Invitational but cold and icy conditions caused the game to be cancelled.

WELBORN MAKES TRANSITION TO BEHIND THE PLATESusan Welborn was mainly a pitcher or first baseman throughout her high school career at Birdville High School in the Dallas area. Already this year, the freshman has transitioned to the outfield, starting three games in either left or right field. Last Fri-day, Welborn moved behind the plate for the first time in her career as she was Texas Tech’s starting catcher against Rhode Is-land. She earned the start behind the plate again the following day against Sam Houston State. It was the first time Welborn had ever appeared at catcher in high school or travel ball. Welborn, who threw out the only runner that attempted to steal last weekend, gives Tech additional depth behind the plate with fellow freshman Brittany Lee and sophomore Kady Crow.

FULTZ DELIVERS IN FIRST CAREER START Ashley Fultz made the most of her first career start last Friday as the freshman belted a key three-run homer against Rhode Island in Texas Tech’s 5-0 victory over the Rams. It was the first career home run for Fultz, who has five RBI already this season as Texas Tech’s usual top pinch hitting candidate. Fultz is one of four Red Raider freshmen to homer already this season, joining Cassie McClure, Kierra Miles and Sydni Emanuel.

OFF TO THE RACESTexas Tech’s ability to steal bases was on full display so far this season as the Red Raiders swiped 33 alone over 19 games. Sydni Emanuel leads all players with 14 stolen bases while Lea Hopson is a perfect 10-for-10 this season with six of those coming during the UTA Hilton Invitational. Tech enters this weekend ranked second in the Big 12 for stolen bases, trailing only Texas which has stolen 45 over 22 games this season. It is the most stolen bases through 19 games in a season in Sha-non Hays’ tenure with the Red Raiders.

AUCOIN RECORDS DOMINATING PERFORMANCE IN ARLINGTONGretchen’s Aucoin 2-1 record in the UTA Hilton Invitational really doesn’t show how dominate the sophomore was in the circle. Aucoin appeared in four of Texas Tech’s five games on the weekend, tossing 19.0 total innings where she allowed just one earned run while striking out 26 hitters. In the Saturday doubleheader against Illinois and Creighton, Aucoin combined for 10.0 innings, surrendering just two unearned runs off three hits. She started off the day with eight strikeouts in four innings of relief to pick up the extra-innings win over Illinois. She followed up by returning to the circle 30 minutes later to match her career high with nine strikeouts in a 1-0 loss to Creighton. Aucoin enters this weekend as the Big 12 leader with a 0.76 ERA as she has allowed just four earned runs in 36.2 innings this season.

TALLEY NAMED BIG 12 PITCHER OF THE WEEK AFTER DOMINATING OPENING WEEKENDTexas Tech senior left-hander Brittany Talley was named the Big 12 Conference Pitcher of the Week this past Tuesday after her dominating performance at the Lions Classic. Talley powered Tech to its first win of the season with a two-hit, complete game shutout of Nicholls State on Friday night and then followed up by tossing 4.1 shutout innings two days later against Texas Southern. The Little Elm, Texas native was the only Big 12 pitcher with at least 10 innings pitched to not allow a single run, earned or unearned, last weekend. Talley also matched her career high with seven strikeouts against Nicholls State before finishing the weekend with 11 while holding opponents to just a .154 batting average.

JUNIOR COLLEGE TRANSFERS PAYING OFF FOR RED RAIDERSSince Shanon Hays’ arrival at Texas Tech in 2010, the Red Raiders have found success with junior college players, recruiting the likes of Logan Hall, Adriana Perez, Raven Richardson among others. Through 19 games this season, Tech’s current class of junior college transfers have boosted the Red Raiders both offensively and defensively with Lea Hopson at second base, Kristi Belshe in left field and Kady Crow appearing behind the plate. Hopson, a College of Southern Idaho transfer, is among the Big 12 leaders with four home runs this season while hitting .327 with 12 RBI. Belshe, meanwhile, leads Tech with four multiple-RBI games this year en route to hitting .262 with 10 RBI. Crow’s impact has been felt most defensively as she has started behidn the plate five times already this season. Belshe and Hopson arrived at Tech after earning NJCAA All-American honors in 2013.

#6THISWith almost a brand new roster and a slew of freshmen, it was quite understandable when Texas Tech was predicted to finish sixth in the Big 12 preseason poll. Well, it was understandable for everyone outside the Red Raider dugout as Tech quickly adopted the motto “6This” for the 2014 season. The motto should be a driving force for the Red Raiders, who after finishing 30-26 in 2013, will be looking to return to the NCAA Tournament for the fourth time in the past five seasons.

RED RAIDERS BOAST LARGEST FRESHMEN CLASS IN SCHOOL HISTORYIn order to get back to the postseason, Texas Tech head coach Shanon Hays will have to rely on the largest freshmen class in school history. The 11-member freshmen class breaks the previous school record of eight freshmen from both the 2004 and 2010 seasons. It is also the largest freshmen class in the Big 12 this season as Tech has four more freshmen then Texas and five more than Baylor, Kansas and Oklahoma State. The group will be expected to not just fill a few roles but make an impact early as Tech tries to replace all three positions in the outfield along with holes at first base and catcher as well. TEXAS TECH RANKS THIRD IN WINS UNDER HAYSSuccess has been no stranger to the Red Raiders under Shanon Hays. Under the Lubbock native, the Red Raiders have flour-ished, winning 151 games in four seasons which already makes Hays the winningest coach in program history. Texas Tech’s success during this stretch has lifted the program from the bottom of the Big 12 Conference standings as the Red Raiders are tied with Baylor as the third-winningest school the past four seasons. Tech is one of just three conference teams to record four straight 30-win seasons, joining the likes of Oklahoma and Texas. HAYS AND OLD FRIEND REUNITE Texas Tech head coach Shanon Hays will have a longtime friend along his side throughout the 2014 season as Greg “Emo” Ev-ans joined the staff this past summer as an assistant coach. Evans, who previously spent nine seasons as the associate head baseball coach at Oklahoma State, will be responsible primarily for the Tech infield which, after setting the school record for fewest errors in 2012, struggled through portions of last season. Considered one of the top infield coaches nationally, Evans helped produce several of the top defenses in the country during his 25 seasons as a collegiate baseball coach. He will look to do the same in his first stint in softball as he inherits an infield scattered with freshmen but also with a pair of returnees in Samantha Camello and Sydnie Tapia. The Boyle, Miss. native coached Shanon Hays when he was first started his collegiate career as an assistant at Lubbock Christian. He would later move crosstown to Tech where he spent a total of nine seasons under longtime baseball coach Larry Hays, father of Shanon Hays. The Red Raiders experienced their most success in pro-gram history during that time with seven 40-win seasons and six trips to the NCAA Tournament.

CAMELLO RETURNS UP THE MIDDLE AFTER STELLAR FRESHMAN SEASONFollowing an impressive debut in 2013, Samantha Camello will be looking for more of the same this season after hitting .311 while starting in all 56 games a year ago. The Temecula, Calif. native became only the sixth starting freshmen in school history to hit over .300 in her rookie campaign, joining the likes of Mikey Kenney (2010), Stephanie Drewry (2009), Ashley Parker (2004), Sandy Butler (1998) and Paula Workman (1997). Camello, who split time between shortstop and second base as a freshman, led a powerful Tech offense during Big 12 play with a .275 average while playing in one of the nation’s top pitching conferences. She will likely be Texas Tech’s opening day shortstop for the second-straight season.

RED RAIDERS ADD PAIR OF NJCAA ALL-AMERICANS IN BELSHE, HOPSONSimilar to years past, Texas Tech once again turned to the junior college level during the offseason to fill needs around the di-amond, bringing in four transfers including two NJCAA All-Americans in Lea Hopson and Kristi Belshe. Hopson, who starred the past two seasons at College of Southern Idaho, was among the top junior college hitters around the country as she hit .431 in 2013 with 12 home runs and 46 RBI. Belshe, meanwhile, led the NJCAA with a .590 batting average in 2013 while playing for Lake Land College in Illinois. Belshe was also the national leader in hits (111) and on-base percentage as well (.645) while also ranking third in doubles (26), runs scored (94) and slugging percentage (1.005). The pair mark the seventh and eighth junior college All-Americans to sign with Tech under Shanon Hays. 2013 TEXAS TECH SOFTBALL NEWCOMERS Name POS YEAR Hometown Kaylyn Archuleta C Jr Alamagordo, N.M. rienced sophomore Gretchen Aucoin. The staff will get an added boost, though, from the emergence of junior Chandler Moore, who, according to Sartini, had the best fall of her collegiate career. The four returners represent 94 percent of Tech’s total innings from 2013 and 29 of the 30 victories from a year ago as well. They will be joined in the circle by freshman Cassie McClure, the reigning Texas 4A-5A Player of the Year, and redshirt freshman Mattison Maisel.

CUSTER, TALLEY HEAD INTO 2014 ALREADY AMONG THE TEXAS TECH ALL-TIME GREATSMost programs throughout the country would likely feel fortunate to have one pitcher making her way up the school’s career record book. Texas Tech is fortunate, though, to have two in senior Brittany Talley and junior Cara Custer. The two pitchers have worked the majority of innings for the Red Raiders the past two seasons and will continue to be mainstays in the circle yet again this season. HAYS TO BECOME LONGEST TENURED COACH IN PROGRAM HISTORYAlready the winningest coach in program history, Texas Tech skipper Shanon Hays will add another career achievement to his resume in 2014. The fifth-year head coach needs 28 games to catch Renee Luers-Gillespie for the longest-tenured Tech coach all-time as he enters the 2014 season having already led the Red Raiders in 227 contests over his four seasons, 28 shy of Gillespie’s 255 from 1996-2000. Hays is currently third all-time in the Tech record book as he also trails Bobby Reeves (2001-04) by eight games as well. He will pass Reeves on Feb. 15 against Weber State and then Gillespie on March 15 when the Red Raiders face Cal State Fullerton in the Titan Classic. EVANS ONE OF TWO NEW FACES IN THE TECH DUGOUT THIS SEASONGreg Evans isn’t the only new face in the Texas Tech dugout this season as former Mississippi Valley State assistant coach Brooke Reed joined the program this fall as the new director of operations. Evans and Reed complete a staff that includes head coach Shanon Hays, associate head coach Aly Sartini and volunteer assistant Holley Gentsch, who was promoted from a graduate assistant position into a coaching role this season. Sandy Wellman, formerly James, will replace Gentsch as the program’s graduate assistant after completing her eligibility a year ago.

POWELL & TALLEY DESTINED FOR SUCCESS OUTSIDE SOFTBALLOne thing is certain after the 2014 season - Texas Tech will have a pair of seniors destined for success. The only two four-year seniors on the Tech roster, Brittany Talley and Taylor Powell are scheduled to receive their degrees this spring with Talley earning hers in chemical engineering while Powell will graduate as an animal sciences major. While highly successful on the diamond, the pair also sport two of the highest grade-point averages on the team. Talley, a native of Little Elm, Texas, enters this semester with a 3.8 GPA and has already accepted a position with Oxy, an international oil company. Powell, meanwhile, has registered a perfect 4.0 GPA entering her final semester and will look to attend veterinarian school following graduation.

TEXAS TECH SET FOR 24 GAMES AT ROCKY JOHNSON FIELDTexas Tech fans will have plenty of opportunities to catch the Red Raiders at Rocky Johnson Field this year with 24 home games set for the 2014 season. After three weekends on the road to start the season, Tech opens its home slate Feb. 28 with a doubleheader against Sam Houston State and Southern as part of the Texas Tech Invitational, the first of two home tournaments for the Red Raiders. Tech will also host the fourth- annual Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic on March 7-9, bringing in the likes of UT Arlington, Northern Colorado, Abilene Christian and New Mexico State. Following a nearly week-long trip to Southern California, Tech closes its non-conference slate with a March 19 doubleheader against North Texas and a three-game set March 21-23 with Texas State. The two series begin an eight-game homestand for the Red Raiders, who will open Big 12 Conference play March 28 at home against Baylor. Tech will also host Oklahoma State and Iowa State in a pair of three-game series this season at Rocky Johnson Field.

RED RAIDERS PICKED SIXTH IN BIG 12 PRESEASON POLLTexas Tech was selected to finish sixth in the Big 12 Preseason Poll that was voted upon by the conference coaches. The Red Raiders, who finished 30-26 a year ago, have ended the season ranked higher in the conference standings than their preseason selection twice under fifth-year head coach Shanon Hays. Oklahoma, the reigning NCAA National Champion, was the unanimous pick to defend its title while Baylor, Texas, Kansas and Oklahoma State follow with Iowa State slated a spot behind the Red Raiders in seventh place. GAME RECAPARLINGTON, Texas - Cassie McClure broke up a 1-1 tie with a three-run homer in the fifth inning Thursday evening that propelled Texas Tech to a 4-1 victory over UT Arlington at Allan Saxe Field.

The home run was the first career long ball for McClure, who finished with all four of Tech’s RBI as the Red Raiders improved to 7-4 on the year heading into the second day of the UTA Hilton Invitational on Friday.

“It’s always nice to start off a weekend with a win,” said Tech head coach Shanon Hays, who was facing one of his former assistants in UTA coach Kristie Fox. “We had great pitching from Gretchen (Aucoin) and then picked up a big home run from Cassie (McClure) in the fifth. This is a big weekend for us and I was proud of how we got off to a good start.”

With a three-run lead behind her, Gretchen Aucoin (2-0) wrapped up her first seven inning complete game of her career as she retired the final five UTA hitters in order.

The sophomore allowed just a run off five hits while striking out a season-high seven hitters en route to the fourth com-plete game of her career and first since tossing a four-hit shutout of Buffalo on March 16 last year.

UTA (6-5) scored its only run in the third inning off a Meagan Michele double to the gap in left center that scored lead-off hitter Britnea Barilli, who opened the frame with one of three walks issued by Aucoin on the night.

The Mavericks stranded eight runners, including two in the sixth when UTA put two runners on off singles from Jolene Schaefer and Mallory Foster with only one out in the frame.

McClure put the Red Raiders on the board in the early stag-es of the game as she grounded out to short in the first, scoring Sydni Emanuel in the process. Emanuel led off in-ning with a first-pitch double down the left-field line.

Tech finished with eight hits, five of which that came from the middle of its lineup as McClure finished 3-for-4 with sin-gles in the third and seventh innings while Kierra Miles went 2-for-4 for her third multiple-hit game this season.

UTA starter Shannon Carrico (4-2) garnered the loss in the circle as she struck out four and walked four in the com-plete-game effort. Carrico spent her 2013 freshman season at Texas Tech before transferring to UTA this past summer.

This was the first of two meetings this season between Tech and UTA as the two schools will face each other again March 8 during the Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic in Lubbock.

GAME NOTES• The win improved Texas Tech to 9-4 all-time against UT Arlington as the Red Raiders have now won the last seven meetings in the series.• Texas Tech was playing just its second true road game as the Red Raiders were previously 0-1 when facing an oppo-nent on its home field with an 8-6 loss last Sunday at New Mexico State.• Cassie McClure finished with a season-high four RBI in a 3-for-4 performance at the plate that included a three-run homer that gave Texas Tech the lead in the fifth inning. The home run was the first of McClure’s career as she is the third Red Raider freshmen to connect on a long ball this season, joining Sydni Emanuel and Kierra Miles.• McClure’s 3-for-4 performance at the plate marked her fourth multiple-hit game this year. Her four RBI matched the most for a Red Raider this season (tying Sydni Emanuel) as it was McClure’s first career multiple-RBI performance.• Gretchen Aucoin tossed her first complete game of the season and the fourth of her career, allowing just one run to UT Arlington off five hits while striking out a season-high seven hitters. It was the first time Aucoin had gone a full seven innings in her career.• Kierra Miles finished 2-for-4 at the plate for her third multi-ple-hit game this season. Miles has now reached base in all 10 games she’s appeared in this season.

GAME RECAPLAS CRUCES, N.M. - Texas Tech jumped out to early lead with 13 runs over the first three innings Friday morning en route to a 14-6 run-rule victory over Northern Colorado in the Troy Cox Classic opener at the NMSU Softball Complex.

It was second run-rule victory in the last three contests for the Red Raiders (4-2) heading into the second game of the day against Weber State. Tech also defeated UMKC, 13-5, last Saturday in Louisiana.

The Red Raiders used a four-run first inning off Northern Colorado (1-5) before coming back with nine in the third to break the game open. Tech’s 14 runs and 19 hits were both season highs.

Six different Red Raiders recorded at least two hits in the rout with Sydnie Tapia and Samantha Camello leading the way with 3-for-4 games while Sydni Emanuel finished 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored. It was the first time a Tech player had recorded three hits in a game this season.

Camello and Tapia were also among the five Red Raiders to drive in at least two runs as well with Tapia connected on a two-run single in the third while Camello recorded a pair of RBI singles in the third and sixth innings.

Lea Hopson led all players with three RBI as she finished 2-for-4 with a two-run homer in the first and then a RBI double that jump-started Tech’s nine-run third inning. The junior college transfer has now homered three times in the first six games.

Kristi Belshe also finished 2-for-4 at the plate with a pair of RBI as she knocked in Tech’s first run with single in the first. She followed a Brittany Lee two-run double in the third with another RBI single up the middle.

Tech’s nine runs in the third marked its most in a single in-ning since also plating nine on March 10 last year against Troy. The Red Raiders previously scored eight last weekend in the third inning against UMKC.

Gretchen Aucoin (1-0) picked up the win for the Red Raid-ers in relief of starter Cara Custer. Aucoin, in her fourth ap-pearance already this season, tossed the final three innings, allowing two runs, both unearned, off three hits and three walks while striking out four.

Custer finished with the no-decision after surrendering four runs off seven hits before being replaced to start the fourth inning.

The Bears plated four runs off Custer with two outs in the third as Megan Wilkinson drove a two-run double off the fence in right field while Nichole Hudson followed with a two-run homer to opposite field as well.

Mikayla Duffy (0-3) earned the loss for Northern Colorado after giving up seven runs off eight hits over the first 2.1 innings. She was replaced by Jayme Reddacliff, who sur-rendered five runs without recording an out, and Breeanna Holliday, who tossed the final 3.2 innings, allowing two runs off seven hits.

The game was the first of three this season between Tech and Northern Colorado as the two schools will meet twice during the Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic that will be held March 7-9 in Lubbock.

GAME NOTES• Northern Colorado’s six runs in the opener marked the most for a Texas Tech opponent this year and the most since Baylor scored 10 on May 3 last year.• Texas Tech set season highs for runs (14) and hits (19) against Northern Colorado. The 19 hits were the most for a Tech team since connecting on 20 against North Carolina Central on March 12, 2010.• Gretchen Aucoin picked up her first win of the season against Northern Colorado, tossing the final three innings where she gave up two unearned runs. The right-hander has not allowed a single earned run so far in her 8.1 innings this season.

GAME RECAPLAS CRUCES, N.M. - New Mexico State used a six-run fifth inning to rally past Texas Tech, 8-6, Sunday afternoon in the finale game of the Troy Cox Classic held at the NMSU Soft-ball Complex.

The Red Raiders (6-4) ended the tournament 3-2 on the weekend after allowing both Weber State and the Aggies (5-5) to overcome deficits in the final innings.

New Mexico State strung together five-straight singles off Tech reliever Cara Custer in the fifth to score four runs. A Brittany Talley wild pitch minutes later scored the game-winning run along with one more as Brittany Lee’s throw back to the plate went wild.

Custer (2-3) took the loss in the circle for the Red Raiders, allowing six runs, four of which were earned, off six hits while striking out two and walking two as well. She relieved Gretchen Aucoin with one out in the fourth after Aucoin al-lowed two runs off four hits.

Tech previously led by four runs heading into the bottom half of the fifth inning following a two-run top half of the frame where Lee and Samantha Camello both connected on back-to-back RBI singles.

Lea Hopson broke up a 1-1 tie in the third with a towering three-run homer over the fence in left center. It was Hop-son’s team-leading fourth home run already this season as she finished 3-for-4 with a single in the fifth and a double in the seventh.

Hopson’s leadoff double in the seventh gave Tech a chance for a ralley but Aggie reliever Celisha Walker recovered to re-cord a pair of strikeouts and a groundout back to the circle to close the game.

Walker earned the save after allowing just the double to Hopson over her two innings. Fellow reliever Makayla McAdams (3-1) garnered the win after allowing two runs off five hits in 2.1 innings in relief of starter Karysta Donist-horpe.

Devon Thomey and Emma Adams finished with six of the Aggies’ 10 hits in the game as the pair went 3-for-4 and 3-for-3, respectively. Thomey drove in a pair of runs as well, connecting on a RBI single in the fourth and then a run-scoring fielder’s choice in the fifth.

Sydni Emanuel recorded her team-leading sixth multi-ple-hit game of the season with a 3-for-4 day at the plate. Camello also finished 2-for-3 with two RBI for the Red Raid-ers in her third multiple-hit game of the weekend.

GAME NOTES• Texas Tech fell to 21-11 all-time against New Mexico State with the loss and 2-2 under head coach Shanon Hays.• The loss marked Texas Tech’s first in a two-run game this season. The Red Raiders were previously 2-0 in such games this season.• The game marked Texas Tech’s first true road contest of the season as the first nine games of the season have all come at neutral sites.• Texas Tech’s six runs were its most in a loss since falling, 8-6, to No. 7 Texas on April 26 last year.• The Red Raiders out-hit New Mexico State, 11-10, in the game, marking the first time Texas Tech has lost when out-hitting its opening this season. Tech was previously 126-9 all-time under Shanon Hays when out-hitting its op-ponent as well.• Gretchen Aucoin earned her first start of the season, finish-ing with a no-decision after allowing two runs, one of which was earned, off four hits and a strikeout. It marked just the first time Aucoin had allowed an earned run in her 13.2 in-nings this season.• Sydni Emanuel continued her strong play at the plate, going 3-for-4 with three singles. It marked the second time she has totaled three hits this season as she also did so Fri-day morning against Northern Colorado. She leads the Red Raiders with six multiple-hit games this year and a .485 bat-ting average.
