Dear ReaderThe most important thing right now is that spring it on its way! It gives you a bubbly feeling of anticipation inside. The days are becoming perceptibly lighter and the first spring bank holidays are right around the corner. It all makes you want to emerge from your winter hibernation and perform the first little tasks in the garden. And if it strikes your fancy, why not combine it with a nice big “spring cleaning” and clear-up of the house? Spring cleaning is a custom which has survived for some of us from the old days when you only really cleaned the house twice a year. But why not try and give your home a real spring make-over. Air-out, clean-up and scrub the place down. Dig-up a few snow drops or shop for a couple of harbingers of spring at your local florist. Rearrange the sitting room a bit or just re-do some of your decorative arrangements. The feeling it gives you can be quite addictive.

Those extra bank holidays are also ideal for bringing family and friends together for some happy and informal occasions. Even if Easter is the most important festival of the year in Christendom, it is only a few of us who see it that way – at least here in Denmark anyway. Here, it is perfectly alright to gather for an informal brunch followed by a nice walk. Many of us are in the habit of using the holidays doing practical things or things we feel we ought to be doing. But why not allow yourself to pull the plug and just do what you feel like doing? And then ENJOY it of course, with a clear conscience. The most important thing right now is that spring it on its way!

Enjoy!

The delicate and slender stem of the fritillary terminates in a beautiful bell-shaped chequered bloom which looks like no other flower in the garden and elicits great exhilaration every spring when it peeps out of the frozen ground. This harbinger of spring deserves a presentation all of its own and actually offers, apart from the chequered variation, a wealth of other kinds with truly lovely blooms. There are flowers, which cover the spectrum from white to crème-yellow ending finally in the claret-coloured, virtually black end of the spectrum.

The fritillary is a perennial bulb plant, which blooms in the garden from April to May. However, to be perfectly honest, we have not had much luck here at the editorial office in getting these plants to grow in the garden. All of which of course is not going to stop us from paying our florist a visit and shopping large amounts of gorgeous fritillaries and then using them to bring spring into our sitting rooms. Maybe you will feel the urge to do the same when you contemplate the superb creations on the next few pages.

What you need:• Buttercups in various colours • Tulips in various colours• Virburnum • Fritillary and fritillary leaves

What you do:Tie a tight spiral bouquet, mixing the flowers well. Remember that tulips grow in the vase, and that it is therefore important to pull them far down into the bouquet. Let the fritillary leaves protrude between the flowers to achieve

a gossamer feel. Sometimes virburnum can have issues pulling enough water, and this can be solved by hammering the final 10 centimetres of the stem flat with a hammer or a knife handle.

What you need:• Fritillary. Here we have used

Fritallaria Meleagris and Meleagris Alba

• Buttercups in shades of white and delicate rose

What you do:Tie a tight bouquet using a mixture of fritillary and buttercups. It will have a style all of its own because of the frilly contribution from the fritillary leaves. Complete the bouquet with a sweet lace ribbon as shown here, and which can just be glimpsed through the vintage glass vase. If you have trouble making the lace tight enough around the bouquet, you can bind it first with string and then add the lace.
