Being a Genuine Member of JCI I became a member of JCI in 2005 by starting JCI Tshwane that is today the most outstanding chapter in South Africa, what really mattered to me is being a "Genuine Member of JCI". With this ex-pression in my mind at all time I have managed to achieve a lot in a space of 3 years. The few achievements I am talking about include serving as a chapter President, COC Director of 2007 Area A Conference and starting JCI in Mozambique, plus providing training in countries that include Cameroon, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Tanzania and my very own South Africa. Well enough talking about me, let us explore the expression "Genuine Member of JCI". The first point that comes to mind is that for one to be genuine you need to know who you are, the same applies to being a genuine member that you need to take time and study what is JCI and how does it work. Reading as many available resources as possible would be a good start. Secondly, taking time to learn what other Jaycees around the world are doing by joining the JCI eWorld and visiting other chapter websites. Thirdly, have a JCI buddy or mentor who can share good insight with you about the organisation and its history. A "Genuine Member of JCI" must know that he/she is part of world class brand and must be its an agent for the brand to leverage from its opportunities. Yes, dont just tell people about the opportunities JCI provides if you dont, unless you take advantage of the opportunities yourself. In other words become an active member and make sure that you directly benefit from all the four areas of opportunity. See yourself as a reflection of the mission, be the young person developing leadership skills, being socially responsible, becoming entrepreneurial, fellowshipping and creating positive change in your society. Applying these basic principles worked for me so you can try and see if it will work for you. The truth is it takes time to develop and get to be a "Genuine Member of JCI" y Tshepo Thlaku

JCI BAMENDA ROYAL ROAD SAFETY CAMPAIGN PROJECT

FOR BIKE “OKADA” RIDERS

GOES OPERATIONAL Interview with Mr. NDI Samuel, Director of Mbassam Driving School, by NFI MUNGAI.

JCI Bamenda Royal Chapter has launched their Plan of Action for the Year which focuses on training “Okada” Bike Riders on Road Safety in Bamenda Town. Meeting at Ayaba Hotel, on the 23rd February 2008 under the patronage of the Governor of the North West Province Abakar Ahamad, the project was officially launched. It aims at training bike riders on the high way code and facilitating the process of them obtaining their legal documents. After two months, JCI Bamenda ROYAL goes back to meet the trainer Mr. NDI Samuel (NS) and explore the realizations this far. JCIBR: What is the aim of this training for bike riders in Bamenda? NS: The aim of this exercise is to change the reckless driving habits of “Okada Riders” in Bamenda which resulted to several accidents and loss of lives. The deplorable situation is quite alarming and has of recent invited public outcry and the need for urgent solutions to this exercise is within the framework of suppressing the level of road accidents caused by Bike riders and safe guarding public life. JCIBR: Sir, you talk of accidents and loss of lives, what actually is the problem? NS: With the introduction of the Bike business in Bamenda, many unfortunate situations have been witnessed. Personally I realized from my daily contact with the drivers that they do not know the high way code, they lack legal documents, they are not

Page 3: JCIC Grassfields News 2

aware of the importance of processing these documents. To add, most of them learned the art in haste and as such their driving output is poor. Same situation arises for Taxi drivers and civil drivers. JCIBR: Sir, what has been your institution’s contribution in solving these problems? NS: I proposed a solution to this problem at my level some time ago by deciding to offer the training. I printed and circulated handouts and made radio announcements inviting union leaders to come for the training. Nobody showed up. I did not relent. I carried out the same exercise, this time offering the training free of charge. Still none showed up. Collaborating this time with the Provincial Delegate for Transport Mr. MULUH Shadrack, a meeting was held between Union Leaders and Driving Trainers at the Ecumenical Centre for peace, where concrete measures were taken to encourage riders come for the training. These included; organizing free classes, assisting in obtaining documents and licenses at relatively little costs. JJCIBR: Sir, how did the JCI collaboration start then? NS: JCI Bamenda ROYAL got in contact with the President of the Bike Driver’s Union with the same project for bike riders. To the best of my knowledge, the Union President informed JCI something similar was being initiated. They decided to fuse the ideas and with the collaboration of others JCI has contacted like the Mayors of all the constituencies in Bamenda, the Delegate of Transport and Organizations like HEIFER International, JCI designed the project, invited the above mentioned authorities for the launching. Now, the first phase of training 25 candidates has been realized. JCIBR: Sir, tell us more about this first phase. NS: So far, 4 sessions have taken place and the first 25 candidates have been trained on the high way code and its importance. The sessions were well organized. No participant missed any. From my analysis, the participants were happy with the training and demonstrated the desire to learn more. They realized their blindness and inability to understand the language of the road. The sessions have received media coverage from CRTV and Cameroon Tribune. The first is now over and now, JCI, the Union Leaders and I are planning the next. JCIBR: What lessons have they been opened to? NS: Yes, this far we have trained them on some basic lessons like, The language of the road (Knowing and obeying road signs), Keeping to the right hand side of the road, knowing the various sections of the road, the attitude on the road towards other users and using the three Cs (Concentrate, Cooperate and Communicate), Knowing the six most dangerous traffic offenses on our roads, knowing the five priority vehicles and their importance on the roads, knowing the meaning of documents, their expiry dates and their importance to users, identifying a convoy, how to overtake it if it is not a convoy of VIPs, knowing the High Way Code and its definition. Just to name a few JCIBR: Any Difficulties? NS: Yes, the major problem is organizing the bike drivers and getting them sacrifice their time to attend the training. I appreciate the efforts of the Union Leaders in assembling and motivating the first set of participants to attend. This was done with the assistance of JCI Secondly there is the problem of finances. JCI has contacted many potential donors, but the response is still slow. It seems the need to solve this problem is not yet felt. I use the opportunity to call on the Authorities, NGOs and other Institution interested in seeing a solution to assist us. There is need for Training, writing

JCIBR: Sir it is too early to talk about the impact, but what recommendations can you make for the continuation of the project? NS: We need to intensify the program by continuous sensitization and publicity and at this point I still thank the Union leaders and JCI. An impact will be felt if say 300 to 500 bike riders are trained and issued documents. They will in turn act as ambassadors to their fellow colleagues. JCIBR: Any last words? NS: Yes, the situation of bike riders is really deplorable. At least six cases of “okada” accidents are registered daily in Bamenda town (Source: Personal Research). It is so alarming, there is a ward in the General Hospital called “okada ward”. I appreciate the Authorities, JCI and other Driving Trainers who are leading initiatives to curb this problem. I invite other road

Last week I was providing assistance by phone to a Jaycee on using JCI eWorld. Spending more than two hours over the phone was not a challenge. Ensuring that she understands what was happening was the Challenge. Remember that JCI eWorld is JCI in the virtual world, where you can express yourself, meet, learn and grow like in any normal JCI local, national, regional meeting or world congress. Sharing on JCI eWorld is the act of using or enjoying pictures, videos, documents, PowerPoint presentations… jointly with other members. Just like you share handouts during or at the end of a training session, you can share the same handouts on JCI eWorld, and rest assured that, it will be viewed, downloaded and used by many more Jaycees. Today, we’ll share the speech of JCI WP Hanlon during a visit to our LOM last weekend. The speech is in word format, and will be shared using the following 7 steps.

1. Sign in to the JCI eWorld website, and then click on the

“New” menu. In the dropdown menu, click on “Document” and wait for a new page to load.

2. Check the “Community” button and select “JCI Talk” in

the list of communities. Click on “Upload a File”, and wait for the next page to load.

3. Write the title of your document. In this case: President

Hanlon’s Speech at JCI LOM Meeting, 26 July 2008.

4. In the space meant for “description”, write a brief intro

about the document you want to share.

5. Browse your computer to attach the speech in word

format.

6. In the “Tag” field, type “President's Speech” (don’t forget underscore between President’s and Speech: President’s_Speech)

7. Click on “Publish” to share the speech with other

material and allowances or gifts to motivate the riders to attend all sessions JCIBR: What have been the benefits of the project so far? NS: There are many benefits. Firstly, the bike riders upon completion of the training receive an attestation which permits them have their licenses and documents for little or no costs at the Transport Office. Secondly, we have been sending the details of the first set to the Transport Office and as at now, 5 participants in the first set have been issued their licenses. The other 20 have been queued in sets of five as well, and their files have been sent to the Transport Office. Thirdly, the participants are receiving f ree lessons . Under no rma l circumstances they would have been paying very high.

How to Share Documents & Collaborate With Others

Us ing JC I eWor l d Jaycees.

This document creation process is the same for creating discussions and blog posts. Collaborating on eWorld is a wonderful experience. Once you are familiar with the above 7 Steps to create a document, collaboration is as easy as A,B,C. Assuming you want to collaborate with Jaycee Peter, whose JCI eWorld ID is peter84, create a document following the first 6 Steps above. Do not click “Publish”, because now, step 7 will be to set your Collaboration Options. Step 7 Click on “+” in front of “Collaboration Options” Step 8 Click on “Specific Users”. In the field, type Jaycee

Peter’s ID (peter84) Step 9 Click on “Publish” to share the document on which you are collaborating with Jaycee Peter. With this collaboration options set, ONLY Jaycee Peter AND yourself can edit the document created. You can add as many collaborators as possible. Now you are done and can create, collaborate and share as many documents as possible. Try it today and let me know if you have any difficulties in the process, so that I can help you out.
