She has also worked on numerous short films, day calls and events.

While studying business at the University of Victoria, Darci took a film course on vampires, where her interest was piqued on the possibilities of Special FX make up and prosthetics work. Subsequently, Darci threw her passion into studying just that: She’s an IATSE 891 Permittee member, and a graduate of Mastery in Prosthetics at JCI. Presently, Darci is keying a feature film, continuing to hone her craft; while still taking the time to lend her expertise, experience and enthusiasm to teach the students at JCI.

INDUSTRYTESTIMONIALS

WHAT STUDENTSHAVE TO SAYKATHIE SINGH“Although I felt like my time at John Casablancas was short, I was confident in all that I learned in their make up artistry program and was able to go out and start working in the industry before I had even graduated. Three months into the program I worked on my first music video, and five months into it I worked on my first full length feature! Their job board was always filled with jobs to build credits and amazing job opportunities that I was able to take advantage of. The advice and experience of industry professional teachers was and still is truly invaluable to me. Now that I’ve graduated I keep in close contact with my instructors and get referrals for projects from the school, as I grow to build my career. I would highly recommend this school to anyone looking to do special make up effects because of the great detail and time that is dedicated to that area of the course. Before I began my schooling I did my fair share of research and I am proud to say that I chose this school and I am a John Casablancas graduate.”

EDINA SCHUBERT“The instructors at John Casablancas for the Make up Artistry Diploma Program were effective and helpful beyond what I had expected. I enjoyed the course and feel excited to start a career in this industry. If I had not attended John Casablancas I feel that I would not have been properly prepared or educated. No other school compares! Thank you to all teachers and staff!!”

ANDREA MARTEL “I found the instructors at John Casablancas to be knowledgeable and talented artists. They display such passion for their craft it inspires and motivates creativity in their students. Since graduating, John Casablancas has supplied me with a steady flow of work with up and coming actors & models in need of photography make up for their portfolios.

In less than 2 months after receiving training in the John Casablancas advanced airbrushing course I was able to secure the 2nd place position in the Vancouver Fashion Week Airbrush/Body Painting competition (Repeating this accomplishment with 2nd place again in 2004). John Casablancas is a top notch institute with the ability to transform it’s students into some of the most talented & professional artists in the field.”

SANDRA WOOSNAM“It was such a memorable experience. My experience attending John Casablancas make up artistry program was an extremely valuable time in my life. The teachers are experienced and knowledgeable about all areas of the industry, and this was reflected in our classes. The staff were very helpful and supportive when I attended the school and they continue to assist me with many employment opportunities to develop my career as a make up artist.”

JENNY MCCALLUM“I felt my instructors went above and beyond the teaching outline to help us. I have told everyone about this school. I love the special effects program. I know people that went to other make up schools and their knowledge of special effects make up is so much less than mine!”

LISA KEEPING“This school is very professional and the teachers, as well as the course content, are very cutting edge. My instructors were friendly and knowledgeable and made us all feel comfortable. I am extremely pleased with the entire course. I learned to do things I never thought possible and I would recommend this school to everyone.”

RANJIT HEER“I really feel that if I had not taken the make up course at John Casablancas I would still be just a lab technician. It has really given me the confidence to go out there and go for what I want. A lot of doors have opened for me and I will always be appreciative to everyone at John Casablancas, especially all my instructors, for their support and encouragement. I am very proud to say that I have gone to John Casablancas.”

TARA MACLEOD 1ST PLACE WINNER - 2004 VFW SPECIAL EFFECTS COMPETITION“My name is Tara MacLeod and I went to John Casablancas in 2004. My advice to those thinking of pursuing a career in make up is be willing to work hard, give your best effort at all times and go to this school! Everyone at John Casablancas will do everything in their power to help you. I cannot recommend better teachers who really listen to you and help you prepare for the real world of make up artistry. As a result of this training, I now have a successful career ahead of me.”

JENNY RUTH Jenny was born to do this! Raised by creative parents, she was introduced to color and design at a young age. As a teenager friends constantly hounded her to do their make up and in an instant she would whip out her brushes to create yet another beautiful face.

Only 2 months into the Make up program at JC Institute, Jenny started doing editorial photo shoots and bridal projects. By the time she finished she had completed 30+ photo shoots, 15 weddings, and four music videos, along with two short films. Of this productive period Jenny says, “I did not want to wait till I was finished class to get things moving in my career”. It was no surprise that JC Institute honoured Jenny with an Overall Achievement Award at the 2010 Gala Awards.

Since completing school Jenny has worked on many projects including three feature films, multiple fashion shows including Vancouver & BC Fashion Weeks, editorial shoots for Coco Rico, String Magazine, BUN Jewellery, and Carola Alder, and continues to stay busy with numerous wedding projects. Jenny also works alongside Vancouver’s hottest Lady Gaga impersonator, Baby Gaga.

In 2011 Jenny was nominated for Vancouver’s Top Make up Artist by the Urban Cultural Conference. She truly is a star and we can’t wait to see what’s next for Jenny!

ELIZABETH MCLEOD TOP TEN FINALIST IN A GLOBAL SHU UEMURA MAKE UP COMPETITION. Liz is the perfect example of what you get when you really put your mind to something. Not only does Liz posses an amazing talent, but she also has the “it factor” that makes a person successful in this business. Her goals are set high and include an Oscar, and the Key

for an Alexander McQueen Fashion Show.

Not long after completing the Make up Artistry Program at JCI, Liz has really gotten down to business and put herself to work. She has done make up for a number of fashion projects such as Maggie Coulombe Collection at Vancouver Fashion Week, as well as fashion shows for Blushing Boutique and Planet Claire. Although fashion is her true passion, Liz has not limited herself, and has worked on many other projects such as filming of the CD4THETROOPS Recording Session, numerous photo shoots and student films. Liz has also worked with local model agencies such as Agency Emme and Numa Model Management.

At the IMATS (International Make up Artist Trade Show) held in Toronto, Liz competed against an international group of Make up artists to complete her take on the Gothic Beauty theme. With Sam Lee (a classmate and fellow JCI Make up Grad) as her model, this team swooped in and took the prize - FIRST PLACE! When asked about her experience at the competition, Liz said, “It was terrifying yet exciting, like jumping off a cliff into the water below. All of the competitors were so talented; it was challenging not to be intimidated. In the end everyone did an amazing job and definitely showed off their expertise.” With this kind of devotion, positive attitude and drive, Liz McLeod is a person who you will want to know in this business. www.elizabethm.ca

MAUREEN LANDA MCGAVIN Maureen’s love of design, fashion, beauty, and the arts began when she was a young student with the Professional Division of Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet. Her work today continues to be influenced by her early years in dance & theatre, and her youth- seventies

punk, eighties glam, nineties grunge and all things cinematic. Having spent a short time working in cosmetics sales, Maureen quickly discovered that make up was going to be the outlet for all of her creative energy, so she packed her bags and headed to Vancouver to study at JC Institute. She returned to Winnipeg after graduation with the goal of working with her idol, filmmaker Guy Maddin within two years. Less than a year later, she was working with Maddin regularly, in addition to other film and television projects; print work; bridal; theatre; commercials; music and corporate videos.

After moving to Minneapolis and taking a long hiatus to raise her young son, Maureen was anxious to get back to work, but was nervous about all of the technological changes in the industry while she was away. Her research led to the discovery that although continuity had gone from Polaroids to digital photography, record-keeping was still done longhand. Returning to the industry, her first project was the low-budget feature, Older Than America, with a large cast & small make up department. The responsibility for continuity fell on her shoulders as the second make up artist. After spending very long days on set, there were literally not enough hours in the day to keep up & she vowed to come up with a better way. She returned from location in northern Minnesota and in collaboration with her husband, Doug McGavin, a software developer, created SavingFace Continuity Software for make up & hair (www.savingface-software.com).

In addition to doing education and marketing for SavingFace, which has most recently taken her to IMATS LA, Maureen continues to work as a make up artist in Minneapolis. Her true love is still

Indie Film, where she’s worked on short films, such as the current festival fave Ana’s Playground and the recent Coen Brothers’ feature, A Serious Man as well as the soon-to-be-released, The Convincer, while also managing to maintain a presence as a freelance beauty artist with such companies as Bobbi Brown; Nars; Benefit; Elizabeth Arden and Smashbox.

KATE BLYTHEThis grad travelled all the way from England to attend JC’s reputable make up program, and boy has she been busy. Outside of being jam packed with weddings, Kate has also worked on a number of short films, one of them from the Queer Film Festival called The Portside, which happened to win Best Picture for the Festival. She keyed a short film called Sindoor which was accepted into the LA Women’s Film Festival and the Women’s International Arts Festival in Miami, Florida. In June 2010 Kate was nominated for a prestigious Leo Award for her work on Sindoor! She has a credit with the huge gaming company, Electronic Arts for the video game Skate. When time allows, she’s back at JCI utilizing her talent for career fair demos, editorial photoshoots, fashion shows, and instructing color theory classes in the Fashion Arts program! Kate was recently a finalist in the International make up Show (IMATS) competition in Vancouver!

SARA AU YEONGSara Au Yeong has the perfect balance of a business leader and creative artist. In order to increase career opportunities and open up her skill set Sara graduated from both the Make up Artistry and Fashion Arts programs at JCI. The time and effort, not to mention the blood, sweat, and tears, certainly paid off. She’s worked in many capacities with large cosmetic companies including Urban Decay, Lola, Elizabeth Arden, Makeup.com and Stila taking on positions in sales, public relations, buying, and management.

In 2006 Sara was the Head Trainer at the Miss America Training Camp in Santa Monica, California. Sara was responsible for a team of artists training the 52 contestants, and was also the Make up artist to judges and hosts Delta Burke, Phyllis George and Angela Perez Baraquio (Miss America 2001). That same year Sara started Arrival Management Ltd, a firm specializing in cosmetics and skincare distribution and Public Relations.

In 2008 she took the distribution business a step further and launched her own Fashion and Beauty boutique, Jules & Eve, in the affluent Vancouver neighbourhood Kerrisdale. JCI is honoured to showcase Sara as a successful graduate!
