Editor’s Note

The year 2015 brings with it a lot of promise for all active citizens. The ever growing laundry list of challenges is an opportunity for young active citizens from all corners of the world to unite for impact in more strategic and vigilant ways. During the period

under review, we feature the new Executive Board charged with carrying the fortunes of the best local organization in Africa and the Middle East (2013, 2014).

The year started on a very high note with a spectacular opening ceremony graced by the Minister of Youth, Indigenization and Economic Empower-

ment, Honourable Chris Mushohwe and invited guests. Soon after, we received sad news of the sudden departure of our General Legal Counsel, Sandra Makoni who left the country in February. Many other activities have since occupied the rank and file of JCI City member-ship which we chronicle in this edition. As young active citizens, the onus is on us to set the agenda for meaningful impact across the broad spectrum of society encompassing civic society, government and business. Our internal newsletter poignantly captures some of our activities in this regard and we hope that this issue will make for some informative reading. As always, we welcome your valuable

Message from the 2015 Local President

In a year in which we are celebrating 100 years of the JCI Movement, we are forced to reflect on how far we have come and where we are going. Evolving from a social group to a leading global network of Young Active Citizens, the organisation has managed to show how young, progressive minds can drive a vision forward and continue to build a

better world. The JCI Movement has maintained one simple mantra over the years- 'Be Better'. Having that dream to bring young people together, the organisation has continued to encourage the development of individuals that come through the organisation to become leaders, innovators, contributors and Active

Citizens in any sphere of influence.

The main agenda for this generation of Active Citizens is how to develop oneself in fellowship with like-minded individuals and how to contribute to the organisation, the community and the world to make it a better place. These simple questions are consistently overlooked and always remain unanswered for the greater part of our existence. The various skills and talents we possess allow us to bring in a unique contribution to the advancement of a particular cause or purpose. If we unlock within ourselves that deep-seated passion and desire, we can contribute greatly to the advancement of not just the organisation but the nation at large. Of note, JCI City is in its second year of the implementation of its Strategic Plan document through which great strides have been taken to achieve our goals by year 2018. We have managed to carry forward our long-

term community projects namely Tokwe-Mukorsi and Work the Land, Empower A Child with the teams coming up with a new focus and exciting activities that will carry the vision forward. We have also seen the Nyunga Nyunga Mbira Project evolving to become the Danhiko Music Club, enhancing the disabled children's motor skills and promoting their exposure to music

New partnerships in the year have been consummated amongst these being the US Embassy Public Affairs Section Partnership with the Effective Speaking team, an MOU with the Harare Chamber of

SMEs initiated by the Business Area and the Environmental Association of Zimbabwe partnership initiated by the Project Impact 100 team. A new crop of energised, involved and inspiring new members are continuously contributing to the organisation with new ideas and value-adding programs. We will not forget the International Recognition which we continue to get, with 2 graduates emerging from the Active Citizenship Academy, 2 representatives from the local organisation who formed part of the winning JCI Zimbabwe Debating team and the Best Local President in Africa and Middle East, the 2014 JCI City Local President Mr. Hope Tariro Chirengwa.

As we continue to raise JCI City, JCI Zimbabwe and the entire JCI movement, let us remember to live the values that have given us our identity over the years and to keep the drive and determination that will see us achieve our goals as we look to make that extraordinary impact. Happy reading!

officials to present their credentials and share notes on challenges and opportunities in the city. A delegation of the Local President and board members did just that and led the way for active citizen-ship. we also met a number of other partners for the various projects that we are undertaking in 2015.

When did you join JCI City (Zimbabwe)?I joined jci first week of February 2014.How did you hear about jci and what convinced you to join?A friend invited us to a jci meeting. The atmosphere and the passion the people I met had moved me to join. Young people coming together to make a difference in the world is not something you see everyday, I wanted to be part of them I had to because I wanted to play my part also.

AMEC (AFRICA & MIDDLE EAST CONFERENCE)Every year, JCI Members unite in their regions for JCI Area Conferences to exchange ideas, learn how to maximize their local impact and collaborate with other National Organizations in their Area. The four Area Conferences--Africa and the Middle East, Asia and the Pacific, the Americas and Europe--give members a chance to take advantage of JCI’s international network while enhancing their National Organizations. At these conferences, JCI gives its members the opportunity to address international issues and show their commitment to becoming socially responsible leaders. These global forums enable members to focus on solutions for their region and how they can grow, improve, share and create positive change across communities.

The Africa & Middle East Conference (AMEC) was held in Accra, Ghana. This year, JCIs converged on the mother city of Ghana at the sumptuous Ghana International Conference Centre from the 1 to 6 May. Zimbabwe was ably represented by a quartet of vivacious ladies who brought home stunning honours that gave our National President, Mr Mathew Mutavayi, well deserved bragging rights. The delegation consisted of Agnes Mukonka (EVP – JCI City Zimbabwe), Laura Tigere, Paida Mafunda (Tokwe Mukorsi Project) and Tusso Jumbe (Special Assistant to the International Vice President & Project Impact Director). Zimbabwe was honoured with a - First Timers award (Laura Tigere – JCI Capital), Best Local President in Africa & Middle East (Hope Chirengwa – 2014 Local President JCI City Zimba-bwe), Registration to the July JCI partnership Summit in New York (Tusso Jumbe – JCI City Zimbabwe).

2014 JCI WORLD CONGRESS Every November, members from across the globe come together for the peak of the JCI year at the JCI World Congress. At this global forum, international officers are elected for the upcoming year. JCI Members also explore ideas for international initiatives and recognize the achievements of outstanding young active citizens. With JCI in more than 100 countries and territo-ries, members have the opportunity to meet fellow citizens from highly diverse backgrounds. JCI Members will share experi-ences and find new ways to create positive change on both local

and global levels. At this event, JCI’s critical mass of young people will unite to magnify the positive impact of the JCI move-ment.

2015 JCI WORLD CONGRESS2015 – To be held in Kanazawa, in the Ishikawa prefecture of Japan from 3 – 8 November. We expect a delegate of over 10 000 attendees to this event with Zimbabwe amongst the delegates. The JCI world Congress is the premier JCI event of the year where JCI members from across the globe converge at an international forum

UPCOMING EVENTS JCI WEEKThis is our annual observation of the tremendous work being done by young active citizens the world over and is commemorated by over 5 000 local organizations internationally. The event is traditionally hosted during the first week of June and members go out in full force to spearhead and champion some of the projects that they are pursuing in their respective calendar year.

RECHARGEThis year’s event is being held at Lasting Impressions, Kadoma and is hosted by JCI Kwekwe. Recharge is a Mid-Year conference organized by JCI Zimbabwe for members throughout the country to mix and mingle, share ideas and experiences for the first half of the year. The conference is usually held at a holiday resort so that members are able to “recharge” their batteries and unwind so that they come back for their second half of the year activities rejuvenated.

The event runs from 26 – 28 June 2015. Everyone is invited to share the JCI experience!

ZIMTRADE EXPORT READINESS AWARENESS SEMINAR

The Business area of opportunity coordinated a seminar for entrepreneurs and SMEs in partnership with ZIMTRADE. The seminar, mainly targeted entrepreneurs and members who wanted to venture into business as well as how to penetrate the Mozambican and Angolan market. There was a presentation from People’s Own Savings Bank (POSB) on how to raise finance for businesses and how to transact in foreign markets. Also present, were JCI partners, Harare Chamber of SMEs members and Zimbabwe National Chamber of Commerce members as well.

THROWBACK-2014 PRESIDENTIAL INDUCTION DINNER

JCI Presidential induction dinners are always the premier shindig to put a lid on the year in our customary spectacular fashion. Our PIDs are held at the end of the year to formally induct the new Local Presidents who will be serving the Local Organisations in the coming year. JCI Zimbabwe hosted the 2014 soirée at classy Monomotapa Crowne Plaza hotel to induct the incoming Local Presidents for JCI City (Zimbabwe), JCI Kwekwe, JCI Gweru, JCI Mutare, JCI Bulawayo, JCI Harare and now JCI Capital. Our young, hip crowd of sophisticated fashionistas were doled to the nines in December 2014 for a night to remember. Invited guests quaffed the choicest drinks whilst following proceedings. As usual, yours truly was on the prowl for the night’s best dressed citizens and captured some of the epic moments on the eve of 2015! We bring you the scoop here. Check it out!

Founded in 1992, JCI City was affiliated to JCI Zimbabwe in 1993. The organisation was mainly formed by Ex- AISEC mem-bers from the University of Zimbabwe. Over the years, JCI City has spearheaded various projects, including the establishment of the First street Mall in the City of Harare, creation of the Traffic Safety Council, Junior Councils and the Ten Outstanding Young

Persons Program.JCI undertakes projects through the Active Citizens Framework (ACF), a patent road map that entails a thorough diagnosis of problems affecting our society, design of sustainable solutions and the involvement of key partners. Projects of this nature will easily attract the required attention from prospective partners. All the above is implemented through four strategic areas of oppor-tunity through which members and partners are usefully engaged Business, Community, Individual & International Area.

1.BUSINESS Best Business Plan (BBP) The best business plan is a non-profit oriented program to develop sustainable and competitive entrepreneurial activities from various young business people nationwide. The aim is to create a platform where Zimbabweans can showcase their ideas and vision to transform the country’s economic destiny. This will be achieved through running a competition titled ‘BBP:2015’ and running with the theme ‘Do It Yourself (DIY)’ to encourage competitors to step up and do things for themselves so that their skills contribute in developing the country. Running through Janu-ary to August 2015, the competition features a series of training seminars and luncheons to help nurture ideas amongst contest-ants, culminating in an award ceremony for the top three finalists. The operations team will be comprised of risk assessors, bank-ers, established entrepreneurs, and investment assessors, who will be reviewing the business plans and representing the judges.

Business EventsHosts business related events that bring issues affecting business such as unemployment and economic recovery solutions to the forefront. This project tackles over 100 suggested solutions to the Economic Recovery of Zimbabwe through a marathon of roundtable sessions and discussions with captains of industry as well as fact finding visits to company premises of distressed former vibrant corporates.

Active Citizen Entrepreneurial Practical Training (ACCEPT)The aim of the project is to encourage an entrepreneurial spirit with our community in order to provide better products and services at competitive prices. Project participants get entrepre-neurship training theory from experienced entrepreneurs and hands on experience in the Business Project that AcCEPT runs

as an income generating project. The project also imparts skills to SMEs to formalise their operations and runs a business linkage programme where SMEs provide services in their ¬field of exper-tise to one another at affordable rates and also marketing each other’s products at different platforms.

2.COMMUNITYJCI City Golf fundraiserThe golf project is the flagship fundraising platform for JCI City to raise funds for financing all the JCI CITY Community Area projects through organizing a charity golf day. This will also bring new partnerships with the business sector to raise funds to support other CITY projects and Local organization activities. The project will result in the creation of partnerships with the business sector whilst crating recognition from the nation at large about the JCI brand.

Blossoms Children’s home & Work the Land, Empower A Child The Community area in JCI City also runs a program that assists underprivileged and vulnerable orphans from Blossoms Children’s Home in Mufakose. Through this program JCI City offers Lifeskills training and effective speaking training sessions to boost their confidence. These take place monthly with JCI members spending a day with the children and imparting vital life coaching to the orphaned children to benefit from a normal family setup.

Work the land, Empower A Child project enhances self-reliance of the orphans at Blossoms Children”s Home (BCH) through promoting income generating activities and initiating a camping site for the Children at their Chihota plot. The aim is to make the 5 Acre plot owned by BCH a fully self-sustainable project at the same time imparting farming business knowledge to the children at BCH and the Chihota community. JCI City seeks to construct and implement a market gardening project, chicken and layers, and piggery projects to contribute to a balanced diet of the children and enhance the level of self-reliance by generating income in the long term.

Tokwe MukorsiBuild Tokwe Mukorsi is a JCI City (Zimbabwe) Foundation initiated project aimed at building a Primary School and to economically empower those affected by the Tokwe Mukorsi floods disaster. These locals have been resettled at Chingwizi in the Masvingo Province’s Nuanetsi range in Mwenezi District. This initiative seeks to restore the pride of this community which was once a respectable community before the floods. We believe through building a school and in the process creating employ-ment and developing the building skills, the community will be empowered to sustainably develop their new found homes and villages. We believe that by bringing together Government, Corporate organizations, civic organizations and the community we can achieve sustainable solutions.

The Ministry of Education has been brought in to provide techni-cal expertise and the community to mobilize and acquire building materials that we need to complete the project. In this case bricks, river sand, gravel and 19mm stones, that villagers will be compensated for making and bringing to the school at subsidized rates. The role of the corporate and civic organization is to chip in

with the building materials and cash needed for the construction of this school. We also seek to empower the JCI member involved in this project. The Individual member can benefit from their involvement in this project in any of the ways:-Skills development - The project offers a wide range of skills development platforms, from team leadership to activity leader-ship, Project Chairing opportunities, and presentation opportuni-ties among a host of other personal skills.

Networking Opportunities - The project is open to members and non-members and this opens great networking and connecting opportunities which may prove valuable in a member’s life.Financial Inflow opportunities - The project provides massive financial benefits to the Local Organization and members who choose to put their hands to the plough, through financially rewarding hardworking members.Danhiko Project

Through this project, JCI City seeks to raise funds for 10 Nyunga-Nyunga (15 key) Mbiras for Danhiko Secondary School. An initial target of $700 has been set which will result in buying Nyunga-Nyunga Mbiras for use at Danhiko Secondary School. Danhiko Secondary School is found in Msasa, Harare and it caters for high school students with special needs and disabili-ties.

3.INDIVIDUALEff¬ective SpeakingThis program seeks to impart of public speaking skills to the modern member. The project is also a platform to impart decorum and protocol skills to participants to master their audience and also be versatile communicators in any given platform. The project trains participants through speech delivery, poetry, debates, interpretive visual art, and narrative speaking. These sessions culminate in public presentations and collaborations with other youth organisations with similar interests.

4.INTERNATIONALNothing but Nets Nothing but Nets (NBN) is a JCI flagship program run with JCI affiliates across the globe in partnership with the United Nations. Its main aim is to fundraise and provide insecticide-treated bed nets to under privileged families in Malaria prone areas. The two organizations continue to work together to coordinate efforts and help achieve the UN goal to end malaria by 2015.Through the campaign, JCI members educate their communities about the reality of malaria and fundraise for the purchase and distribution of insecticide-treated bed nets to families in Africa.Impact 100

In 2015, JCI is celebrating 100 years in existence as an organiza-tion creating development opportunities to empower young people to create positive change. As part of this initiative, JCI City is running Project Impact 100 to empower young people and their communities to positively impact the lives of 100 individuals by providing opportunities to bring positive change. Some of the lined up activities to celebrate 100years of Impact include the production of a booklet with profiles of JCI City past presidents, projects, TOYP honorees and partners.

In addition, the team will present a Video on 100 year Celebra-tions during Thursday meetings. Project members will also create awareness about the event by distributing printed t-shirts with 100yrs Celebrations logo and host a Fashion and Arts Show on the Africa Day weekend to fundraise for the launch of the recycle bins amongst other events.

as an income generating project. The project also imparts skills to SMEs to formalise their operations and runs a business linkage programme where SMEs provide services in their ¬field of exper-tise to one another at affordable rates and also marketing each other’s products at different platforms.

2.COMMUNITYJCI City Golf fundraiserThe golf project is the flagship fundraising platform for JCI City to raise funds for financing all the JCI CITY Community Area projects through organizing a charity golf day. This will also bring new partnerships with the business sector to raise funds to support other CITY projects and Local organization activities. The project will result in the creation of partnerships with the business sector whilst crating recognition from the nation at large about the JCI brand.

Blossoms Children’s home & Work the Land, Empower A Child The Community area in JCI City also runs a program that assists underprivileged and vulnerable orphans from Blossoms Children’s Home in Mufakose. Through this program JCI City offers Lifeskills training and effective speaking training sessions to boost their confidence. These take place monthly with JCI members spending a day with the children and imparting vital life coaching to the orphaned children to benefit from a normal family setup.

Work the land, Empower A Child project enhances self-reliance of the orphans at Blossoms Children”s Home (BCH) through promoting income generating activities and initiating a camping site for the Children at their Chihota plot. The aim is to make the 5 Acre plot owned by BCH a fully self-sustainable project at the same time imparting farming business knowledge to the children at BCH and the Chihota community. JCI City seeks to construct and implement a market gardening project, chicken and layers, and piggery projects to contribute to a balanced diet of the children and enhance the level of self-reliance by generating income in the long term.

Tokwe MukorsiBuild Tokwe Mukorsi is a JCI City (Zimbabwe) Foundation initiated project aimed at building a Primary School and to economically empower those affected by the Tokwe Mukorsi floods disaster. These locals have been resettled at Chingwizi in the Masvingo Province’s Nuanetsi range in Mwenezi District. This initiative seeks to restore the pride of this community which was once a respectable community before the floods. We believe through building a school and in the process creating employ-ment and developing the building skills, the community will be empowered to sustainably develop their new found homes and villages. We believe that by bringing together Government, Corporate organizations, civic organizations and the community we can achieve sustainable solutions.

The Ministry of Education has been brought in to provide techni-cal expertise and the community to mobilize and acquire building materials that we need to complete the project. In this case bricks, river sand, gravel and 19mm stones, that villagers will be compensated for making and bringing to the school at subsidized rates. The role of the corporate and civic organization is to chip in

with the building materials and cash needed for the construction of this school. We also seek to empower the JCI member involved in this project. The Individual member can benefit from their involvement in this project in any of the ways:-Skills development - The project offers a wide range of skills development platforms, from team leadership to activity leader-ship, Project Chairing opportunities, and presentation opportuni-ties among a host of other personal skills.

Networking Opportunities - The project is open to members and non-members and this opens great networking and connecting opportunities which may prove valuable in a member’s life.Financial Inflow opportunities - The project provides massive financial benefits to the Local Organization and members who choose to put their hands to the plough, through financially rewarding hardworking members.Danhiko Project
