Foreword from the Chair and Vice Chair of Governors

We are very pleased to introduce our strategic plan for the next 6 years. Much has happened in the progress of the College in recent years and we can be very proud of the many successes that our students have achieved over the whole spectrum of the College’s activities.

The coming years will continue to see unprecedented change in Jersey and the world at large. Technological advances and growth in the developing world relative to the developed economies present great challenges to our students and it is our job to make sure that they are properly equipped to meet them so that they can look forward to lives which are fulfilling and contribute to the well being of society as a whole.

Change comes at an unprecedented rate and it is essential that our students are well placed to embrace and take all the opportunities that change presents. That is the essence of the plan which covers all aspects of the College’s activities and all age ranges from the Reception class to the A level student.

The underlying values that underpin College life and all we do - ASPIRE, INQUIRE, EXCEL and BELONG - are as relevant to the future as they are to the past and these values remain the cornerstone of the plan.

We start from a very strong position. The College is outstanding in much of what it does. Our aim now is to make it a great school in all that it does and the exemplar for the States Education system. Many of the targets we have set are very challenging and aspirational but we would not be doing the best for the students if they were any less so. We seek to achieve them all. We may not get there but it is a clear statement of intent.

We thank all those who have contributed to the development of the plan, parents, staff, students and governors and look forward to reporting regularly on the progress we make.

How we came to this point

JCG is a dynamic and inspirational place in which to learn and work. All our efforts are designed to bring our values of Aspire, Inquire, Excel and Belong to life. In short, we believe that if our students achieve what they are capable of achieving they will astound themselves and us.

Over recent years, through the combined efforts of the JCG community, JCG and JCGP have developed and embedded a strong vision, articulated clear and core values, increased educational excellence, nurtured the importance of service, brought about the JCG Foundation and amalgamated to form one College - JCG. These are significant developments, among many others, and ones that place the College in a strong position for future educational growth and excellence.

This document sets out the vision and values of the College and what high level changes we need to take as we aspire to achieve our vision for each of our students over the next six years. This strategy is born out of and encompasses the wide ranging and detailed consultations undertaken during the last eighteen months.

Consultations took place with senior teams at JCG and JCGP, Governors, Parents, Staff and Students. Their ideas, passion and drive to provide the very best educational experience for our students have resulted in a strategy which is challenging, ambitious and exciting.

We cannot afford to stand still. Our seriousness in achieving the very best for our students is expressed through five commitments:

Our Vision

A pen portrait of a student leaving JCG at the end of Year 13.

You will enjoy life to the full, value your friendships and achieve balance in your life. You will have a thirst for knowledge and already possess a broad understanding of the cultural, historical, geographical and scientific events and ideas which have fashioned your island and your world, and an eagerness to discover more. You will be a rigorous and imaginative thinker.

You will have a good range of hobbies and interests, including the Arts and sport, which you want to pursue. You will leave us with an excellent record of achievement for an academically-demanding course at university or employment which will lead to a stimulating career. You will have the ambition, motivation and staying power which will equip you to study independently and successfully at either. You will apply for internships, work experience and voluntary work in your holidays.

You will have grown as an individual who is happy, well mannered and able to find fulfilment in your service to others. You will be thoughtful, open-minded and be able to lead. You will be conscious of the advantages you have enjoyed and of the opportunities and obligations such advantages should bring. You will want to have a positive impact on your community and the world.

You will have happy and lasting memories of your time at College and an admiration for those people who have nurtured and shaped your learning.

Our ambition for all students at JCG Prep

We aim to nurture happy, confident, caring students, who enjoy positive relationships and show compassion and respect for others. We want students to grow as individuals, to feel valued and to forge a strong and supportive community that reaches out around the world. We hope they will demonstrate a growing awareness about the choices they make and the impact these have on their environment.

We want to develop hardworking, independent learners and creative thinkers. Our students will be encouraged to take full advantage of opportunities and to aspire to the highest standards. We aim for our students to be inquisitive, ambitious and motivated in their approach to learning. We want them to grow in independence, to be reflective in their thinking, to be eager for challenges and to be able to cope with setbacks.

Our goal is to prepare our students for life beyond JCG Prep equipped with the knowledge, skills and attitudes for life-long learning.

• Produce a policy on student voice that outlines our principles and roles and responsibilities

• JCG ethos of independent learning and development of transferable skills e.g. communication skills, self-starters etc

• Students’ employability skills are developed through an extensive programme of specialised workshops e.g. Partnerships with local businesses, Insight into Teaching, Medicine, Nursing, Midwifery, CV writing, interview techniques etc

• Continue to achieve excellent examination results and end of key stage achievement and progress measures

• Develop a network of work experience opportunities through the new Employability Coordinator

• Update technology used by students within the College to enable them to be fully conversant with the latest programmes and packages

1.6 The JCG Foundation is active and relevant within the lives of our alumni, corporate partners and the local community.

• Build on the successful incorporation of the JCG Foundation and develop the long-term connections with our Alumni and local community

2.1 High Standards of achievement at A2 will be targeted with a 10% increase.

3.1 A responsive curriculum that meets the needs for students’ skills, knowledge and understanding within a rapidly changing society.

What we will do:

• Annually review the curriculum provided across the College against our aims

• Engineer improvements that enhance the stated aims

• Engage all stakeholders in the process of refinement

3.2 A strong international focus.

• Our students and staff actively seek and engage with the global community to extend knowledge, understanding and a desire to explore

• Seek to receive International school award status (British Council validation)

• Explore Sixth form provision for international students

• Continue to plan for all students to be proficient in at least one foreign language with many proficient in two

3.3 A strong technological focus on creativity, innovation and application (the use of technology to enhance learning and attainment across the curriculum).

What we will do:

• Develop a three year investment strategy focusing on infrastructure, resources and training

• Be proactive in identifying ways of including technology to enhance learning

3.4 A high quality extra curricular programme to achieve the highest level of achievement in participation, competition and enjoyment.

• 100% participation in an extra curricular activity

• Positive reaction by means of survey to our enrichment programme

What we will do:

• Provide an exciting and extensive extra curricular and enrichment provision to achieve balance and high levels of interest and engagement which reflect the opportunities and delights of ‘Campus Jersey’

• Create a JCG scheme which will identify minimum requirements that our extra curricular programme will provide

• Review the structure of the school day to facilitate this

3.6 Our ‘Inquiring Minds’ lecture series and debating programme is open to the Island and supported by leading academics from across the world.

• Reinforce links already made

• Identify new and interesting areas and speakers

3.7 Strategic Partnerships with UK and international universities and local employers underpin a strong programme of higher education and career planning and mentoring

• Extensive support by local employers for further learning and employability skills

• Annual visit from ‘Study Options’ who are our contact for applications to universities in Australia and New Zealand

3.8 A JCG Summer camp for Channel Island students, similar to the Elizabeth College Music summer school in Guernsey.

• A successful camp open to students from across the Channel Islands

What we will do:

• Plan to run a summer camp at JCG in 2017

4.1 The skills of staff, parents and the island community are volunteered and utilised.

• A team of Voluntary Teaching Assistants come in to College to help in classes and to help individuals who need support. Parents and the community contribute to the Inquiring Minds Lecture series and other curriculum events

What we will do:

• Continue to build on the current programmes, ensuring that we maintain high standards

• Create a ‘skills bank’ to draw upon as appropriate

4.3 A strong bursary programme.

• Ensure and extend funds to provide bursaries

• Continue to advertise the availability of bursaries at every opportunity

4.4 A College playing field to the east of JCGP.

• Revisit the 2005 plans, investigate and reinstate the proposal of a playing field behind Jersey College for Girls Preparatory on fields 801/802

• Work with the ESC Sports Development team and the JCG Foundation to seek additional funding

• Develop a partnership with sports clubs and maximise the use and potential income of any new facilities

4.5 A single campus which is safely accessible.

• Additional control measures for Claremont Road to increase safe crossing

What we will do:

• Work with ESC and the Roads Safety Committee to identify and implement additional control measures to Mont Millais

• Work with ESC and the Roads Safety Committee to consider, agree and implement options for Claremont Road to include:

• Closure, one-way system, 20mph speed limits, and safe crossing areas

4.6 Explore ways of developing and extending the resources and facilities within the College grounds to promote and enhance learning.

• Develop a fully costed business plan with clear objectives to explain the rationale behind our proposal

• Engage with key stakeholders, JPH, ESC, JCG Foundation and an architect to scope out the works and implement a programme of activity and fund-raising

Commitment Five: A strong partnership with ESC to recalibrate our relationship to achieve greater earned autonomy over the:

5.1 Staffing model to meet the needs of the College.

Indicated by:

• Governors are able to facilitate a staffing model, beyond the constraints of FTE and Headcount, which is within budget and enables the College to achieve its stated ambition

What we will do:

• Review with ESC the limitations created by Headcount and FTE

• Provide staffing models to demonstrate structure and educational benefits without these restrictions

5.2 Setting of fees.

Indicated by:

• Governors have the ability to set fees as required by the College within parameters agreed with the Minister

What we will do:

• Engage with ESC to provide 3 year forecasts

• Have agreement in principle for fee increases across a 3 year period

5.3 Size of intake.

Indicated by:

• A review of student numbers in Foundation, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2

• An increase from 110 to 120 students per year in Year 7 into the senior school

What we will do:

• Develop a paper highlighting recommendations to any change to student numbers at JCGP

• Engage with ESC to discuss the advantage of removing the limit on Year 7 intake

5.4 Structure of the school day.

Indicated by:

• Governors have the autonomy to develop flexibility over the length of the school day thereby enabling the College to increase opportunities for students and provide more flexible contracts and timetables for staff

What we will do:

• Engage with VCJ to consider various models and advantages for change

• Present a detailed paper setting out all considerations to ESC for discussion
