City of Asylum @ Alphabet City

Grand openingSvetlana AlexievichWinner of the 2015 Nobel Prize in

Literature, Svetlana Alexievich will be the guest of honor at

the grand opening of City of Asylum @ Alphabet City on September 9 & 10, 2016. We are excited to have her here to present an inaugural address and public interview with The New Yorker writer Philip Gourevitch. Their appearance will launch our expanded, year-round programming.

Alexievich faced persecution from the

regime of Alexander Lukashenko, and fled Belarus in 2000. From 2006–2008 she lived as writer-in-residence in Gothenburg, one of the 50 cities in the International Cities of Refuge Network (ICORN). Her own life story demonstrates why ICORN is both necessary and important, and we are proud that City of Asylum Pittsburgh was chosen to be the U.S. headquarters of ICORN. We also thank ICORN for helping arrange Alexievich’s visit.

Oliver LakeOne of the greats of jazz

and the genius behind our Jazz Poetry concerts since 2005.

Lake is one of the founders of the World Saxophone Quartet, which in 2007 was the first national jazz group to play at Jazz Poetry Concert. The WSQ will return to launch our expanded jazz program. Lake will also premiere a jazz-poetry solo act.

and...

City of Asylum creates a thriving community for writers, readers, and neighbors. We provide sanctuary for endangered literary writers, so they can continue to write and their voices are not silenced. We also offer a broad range of literary programs in a variety of community settings to encourage cross-cultural exchange.

Coming directly from Estonia and Russia, this

powerhouse group will perform for several nights in different configurations and collaborations with Pittsburgh jazz artists. On

one evening they will play their jazz adaptation of 19th century Russian composers that ranges from the lyrical to the punkish.
