Methodology and Framework Ethnography method were used to experience what
students are going through during a lecture.
Interviews with lecturer and a couple of students were carry out using 6 sense-making process and 4 threads of experience
4-pleasure Analysis of students on the experience were included too

Observations
Environment/Situational Factors Facilities of theater
Chairs with cushion and a swivel table. Big enough for A4 size papers and stationeries.
Theater is quite well furbished, sound proof, cool colors of green and light brown were used.
Space Leg area in between rows of chairs is relatively small, those
who are tall tend to feel a little discomfort One might hit someone’s knee when laid back
Influencers

Observations
Environment/Situational Factors Lighting
Theater is brightly lit, enough light for reading and writing Lights were dimmed before video playing even for a short
while
Temperature Seems to be cold for most students Jacket is common among students
Influencers

Observations Lecturer (Dr Gilbert Yeoh, Associate Professor)
Male, probably in his 30s, glasses, shirt (sleeves folded) and pants, presentable looking
Friendly attitude, not stern looking
Speaks clearly, not firmly, with sincerity
Uses snapshots from films as examples for his points, dim lights when necessary
Influencers
j.ed.ka7
Observations Lecturer (Dr Gilbert Yeoh)
Reiteration of points with film repeatedly
Poses questions to crowd and he answer questions promptly
Tend to repeat “er.. erm” continuously throughout the class
Gave 10mins of break after almost an hour of lecture
Influencers
j.ed.ka8
Students Dressed in casual clothing
Brought in food and drinks
Some tend to come late from front and back doors
Some students have to sit on the stairs
Drinks and Food in Theater
Observations Influencers
Student sitting on the stairs
j.ed.ka9
Students Front row students seems to pay
more attention to the lecturer Students behind tend to be
distracted often; dozing off, chatting, checking phones, emails
Adapter wires were seen laying on the floor at the back and on the stairs.
Students at the back dozing off
Observations Influencers
j.ed.ka10
Students Students sitting at the back of
the last row of seats, chatting and eating and drinking
Silence when lecturer poses a question, respond mainly from the front rows.
Occasionally, students laugh at lecturer’s jokes
Need few minutes to settle down at the start and break of the lecture
Observations Influencers
Students sitting behind, having a ‘picnic’
j.ed.ka11
Observations Influencers Technology
Slides were pretty simple, no background image, black colour font, serif type. Use red colour to emphasize certain words.
Microphone were used but voice is clear and loud enough even without the use of microphone
Power Point slide
j.ed.ka12
Observations Influencers Technology
Use DVD player for film showing, have to change disc during lecture and seek to wanted scene
Flexible dimming of lights; front or back lights, even the brightness of the lights
Projector screen is sharp and big enough for all to see
j.ed.ka13
Interviews with students Anticipating (Before)Respondent1
Especially adventurous and creative since multimedia elements are used
Lecturer to be young and enthusiastic
Respondent 2 Expected the use of films in showcasing knowledge
j.ed.ka14
Interviews with students Anticipating (During)Respondent 1
Surprised that there was so much to learn about films (expected more from the films shown)
Interviews with students Connecting and Interpreting Respondent 1
Slides were a little boring and full of information Lack of pictures in slides Lecturer is knowledgeable but not what he expected
Respondent 2 Sees the lecturer as competent and “cute” Power point slides are not eye catching which explain why
some students fall asleep during lecture Temperature is cold
j.ed.ka15
Interviews with students Reflecting Respondent 1
Likes the way films are shown in the lecture However, the showing of films might give the impression that
the course can be taken lightly Temperature should be set higher More breaks as lecture is 4 hours long (including 2 hours of
movie screening) Should change venue for the two hours of film screening as
seats get uncomfortable after a while
j.ed.ka16
Interviews with studentsRespondent 2Films have highlighted concepts that might be missed out unconsciouslyNo con in showing films at all
RecountingBoth respondents are satisfied with the lecture and would recommend it to their friends
j.ed.ka17
j.ed.ka18
Physio Pleasure• Chairs are not comfortable for the 4 hours lecture (Need)• Air-con is too cold (Appreciation)
Psycho Pleasure• Knowledge drawn from films (Need)• Lecture presentation by lecturer (Appreciation)
j.ed.ka19
Four Pleasures of Student
Ideo Pleasure• Wanting to gain sufficient knowledge(Need)• Able to critique film (Appreciation)
Socio Pleasure• Having a lecture with friends and dicussing on the elements
showcased

Four Pleasures of Student
Interview with Lecturer Anticipating (Before)
Hope to make students better appreciate the medium of films – both visual and audio elements – intelligently, imaginatively and creatively
Anticipating (During) Students to look at original text after having their interest
sparked by the film shown
j.ed.ka21
Interview with Lecturer Connecting, Interpreting and Reflecting
The use of multimedia make the conveying of message especially with regards to visual images easier
Elicit interest in students
However, when the film is on a novel adaptation, the film oversimplifies what I try to convey
Students who walk into the LT late disturbs my train of thoughts and takes away students attention
j.ed.ka22
Interview with Lecturer Recounting
Would continue to use multimedia elements since it is a need in a film course
Would definitely recommend other lecturers to do so if it suits their pedagogy

Problems/Solutions Noted 1) Students’ attention span
Problem: Students are dozing off before break Frequent changing of media
Possible Solution(s): Break could be given at the 45mins mark instead. Lecturer can also have some small exercise to wake
everyone during break or during lecture. Instead of using just DVD, clips of video or pictures can be in
slides to elaborate a point if it is possible
j.ed.ka26
Problems/Solutions Noted 2) Students’ expectations
Problem: Most of the time it is one way communication
Possible Solution(s) Although a few questions were posed to the students, only
one will reply after a few minutes of silence. Could reward students if anyone answer it correctly. Some small exercises can be given to test students knowledge and learning process
j.ed.ka27
Problems/Solutions Noted 3) Entertainment value
Problem: Lecture slides were noted to be rather dull. Screening of Film after Lecture at 4pm is in the same theater
Possible Solution(s) More pictures or short clips of video can be played directly
from PPT slides. A shift to a more comfortable seats and a new venue can
make watching film more enjoying.
j.ed.ka28
Problems/Solutions Noted 4) Noise’
Problem: Lecture theater is a tad cold Limited space for leg, tend to hit someone knees when laid
back
Possible Solution(s) decentralizing the air con control system replacing the air con with auto humid or temperature
control ones Bigger leg space should be given. Taller students often feel
uncomfortable
j.ed.ka29
Problems/Solutions Noted 4) Noise’
Problem: Lecture theater is a tad cold Limited space for leg, tend to hit someone knees when laid back Late comers entering from the front doors is found to be distracting to both
lecturer and students
Possible Solution(s) decentralizing the air con control system replacing the air con with auto humid or temperature control ones Bigger leg space should be given. Taller students often feel uncomfortable 2 front doors can be locked when the lesson starts and open during break
and when lesson ends
j.ed.ka30
Problems/Solutions Noted 5) Disruptive behaviour
Problem: No monitor for DVD playback. Lecturer have to look up to the
screen to seek for the current moment. Due to limited seats, students having a ‘picnic’ behind the lecturer
theater, with water boiler and adapter around and chattering.
Possible Solution(s) Monitor screen can be implemented to view what’s playing in DVD
while facing the students Shift to a bigger Lecture Theater Lecturer can actually organize the seats better. E.g. ask students that came
early to sit at the back and those late comers in the front. Lecturer can also order students not to sit on the stairs.
