Jayhawks who have already seen athletic and academicsuccesses at a young age, including several state champions, atleast four class valedictorians and more than 20 Kansas HonorScholars who received recognition from the Alumni Associationfor ranking in the top 10 percent of high school seniorsthroughout the state. Jack Campbell will march to a familiar beaton the Hill after graduating from Blue ValleyNorth High School, where he participated in theMarching Mustangs drum line and contributedhis musical talents to the symphonic band. Alongwith his extensive volunteer work and leadershipas an Eagle Scout, Jack excelled in the classroomas an honor roll student. He joins his sister, Patri-cia, on Mount Oread. Their parents are Donald,m’80, and PattyRobinson Camp-bell, n’76, of Lea-wood. Jack’smaternal Jay-hawk lineage includes his

grandfather, John Robinson, e’49, and great-grandparents, David Beach, c1906, and AileenWeaver Robinson, c1906. His great-great grand-parents were Henrietta Beach Robinson, 1870,and David H. Robinson, one of three facultywhen KU opened in 1866. Another great-greatgrandmother, Gertrude Bullene Weaver, c1877,married Arthur Dunham Weaver, proprietor ofLawrence’s mainstay department store. Jack joins

his secondcousin, WilliamLeach, in contin-uing the exten-sive Robinsonlegacy on theHill.

An academically talented graduate of OlatheEast High School, Andrew Benjamin Dickin-son is eager to indulge in his true passion–KUbasketball. Andrew spent study breaks on thesoccer field and baseball diamond. He’ll practicefor life in the business world at KU, where heplans to study accounting. He isthe son of William Dickinson IV,j’76, whose parents are William

Britt August Gerwick salutes his true-blueheritage as a KU freshman after graduating fromSt. John’s Northwestern Military Academy in De-lafield, Wis. He achieved the rank of staff ser-geant, earned academic honors and spent fouryears honing his skills on the basketball court.Britt’s Jayhawk history begins with two sets ofgreat-great grand-parents: RobertBarnard, 1895,and Clara ButlerWheelerWagstaff, 1892,

as well as KU Endowment Association co-founder Charles Sumner, c1880, and KU’s firstmusic graduate, Mabel Gore Gleed, f1887. William Robinson Leach claims at least 50KU kinsmen, including second cousin and fellowfreshman Jack Campbell. Will shined as captainof the swim and lacrosse teams at Shawnee Mis-sion South High School while maintaining a 4.0grade average. He hopes to attend medical schoolfollowing his undergraduate years. Success is nostranger to this new ’Hawk, who has five uncleshonored with the KU Distinguished Service Cita-tion. BrotherBenjamin Leachwelcomes Will to

Iola High School track star Alisa Miller set thepace for a promising future when she chose tostudy business at KU. A four-year state track andcross country qualifier and 1,600-meter leaguechampion, Alisa performed equally well in theclassroom and on stage with the drama club. Foracademic advice, she can turn to her brother,Drew, a junior in the business school. Their par-ents are Jay and Karen Jones Miller, who both at-tended the University with the Class of 1981.

Karen’s father is Robert Jones, a’53. Alisa’s pater-nal KU ancestry includes grandfather, EdwardMiller, b’55; great-grandparents, Horace, ’24, andNannie Stover Miller, ’25; and Nannie’s parents,Luther and Madge Fisher Stover, who started theKU tradition as members of the classes of 1895and 1897.

Lawrence native Kaitlin Elizabeth Morrisbrings an undeniable Jayhawk legacy that beganwith KU cornerstone coach Forrest “Phog” Allen.While she wasn’t cheering for the ’Hawks, Kaitlincheered on the Free State High School Firebirds,participated in track and lent her analytical skillsto the math team. Her maternal KU line includesher mother, Elizabeth Newsom Morris, b’82, and

grandmother, Faye Newsom, ’82. Kaitlin’s father,Ken Morris Jr., ’83, is the son of KU footballplayer K. Duane, b’59, and Judith Allen Morris,c’60. Fifth-generation Jayhawk Rabin Walters, ofBoulder, Colo., carries on a KU legacy that datesback to 1902. While at Monarch High School, hevolunteered as a youth soccer and basketballcoach and earned the MonarchTeacher’s Award for Achieve-ment. He also claimed a silveraward in a DECA marketing as-sociation competition his junior

year. Rabin is the son of Stephanie Hearn, j’85;grandson of Donald, b’59, and Sandra Smith

Hearn, d’59, who marriedat Danforth Chapel in1958; great-grandson ofKatherine Jackman Smith,’23; and great-greatgrandson of Olivia ReesJackman, 1902.

Kyle Quackenbush, a graduate of OlatheNorthwest High School, brings his athletic andaesthetic talents to the Hill, where he plans topursue a business degree. Kyle was recognized asan outstanding soccer player, but harmonized hisleisure time between the sports field and themusic room. A talentedcellist, Kyle was namedKansas Ambassador ofMusic. Allyson Shaw has high hopes to become a Jay-hawk journalist after graduating from Blue ValleyNorth High School with a host of academic hon-ors, including the Presidential Award for Educa-tional Excellence. The Kansas DesignatedScholar became a wordsmith as staff writer, busi-ness manager and opinion editor for the newspa-

per. She joins two cousins, Steven and Jeffrey Fee,at KU. AlthoughClaytonAshleyfollows threegenerationsof doctors, hebelieves in

the healing powers of music and drama. The Topeka HighSchool graduate played with the marching band, drumlineand jazz band four years, and got a glimpse of life on the Hillat the KU Jazz Music Camp in 2004. Clayton also wrote,edited and directed the winner of the Best Short Film at the2007 Mandala Film Festival. His parents are Thomas, m’84,and Ann Nicholas Ashley, g’83. He follows a paternal KUline that includes his grandfather, B. John Ashley Jr., c’53,m’56, and great-grandfather, Byron J. Ashley, c’22, m’24.

Hollie Elise Benson hadher hands full with a varietyof high school activities, butwas always willing to lendone to those in need. TheHouston native graduatedfrom James E. Taylor High

School, where she ran track and cross country and playedpiano four years. In addition to a long list of volunteer work,Hollie made time each year to bike 180 miles from Houstonto Austin for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s annualcharity event. She is the daughter of Matthew Benson, c’76,and the granddaughter of Page, l’47, and Neil Legler Benson,c’45. Her great-grandfather was George Benson, l1906.

Scholastic standout Whitney Bloom comes to KU with aquartet of honors as a National Merit, Kansas Regent,Kansas Honor and Governor’s Scholar. Her eclectic mix ofactivities at Buhler High School included band, drama, de-bate and forensics, cross country and the Key Club. Whit-ney’s parents are James, j’80, g’83, and Susan Owens Bloom,

d’80, g’87, ofOverland Park.Her paternal lineextends to hergrandparents,Lewis, m’57, andOlive Selfridge

Bloom, ’54. On her mother’s side are her grandparents,Dean, b’53, l’68, and Doris McConnell Owens, f’53, and hergreat-grandparents, Howard and Elma Hunzicker McConnell,who studied at KU with the classes of 1919 and 1918.

Spencer John Bolandhas recently returned from afield of dreams after helpinghis Blue Valley NorthwestHigh School baseball teamearn third place at the 6Astate tournament this year.

His volunteer work has inspired him to pursue pre-medstudies at KU. Spencer’s Jayhawk ancestry began with hismaternal great-grandmother, Edith Popplewell Dunn, whoattended with the Class of 1928. The line continues with hisgrandfather, Dallas Dunn, b’50, and his mother, SusanDunn Boland, c’82, of Overland Park.

Chase Buford comes tothe Hill from San Antonio’sAlamo Heights High School,where he played basketballfor four years—not surpris-ing, considering he is theson of a former KU assistant

men’s basketball coach. Chase also enjoys time on the waterand on the green as an avid wake boarder and golfer. Chaseis the son of R.C., ’85, and Beth Boozer Buford, d’78; thegrandson of Warren, ’66, and Nancy Moore Boozer, d’51;and the great-grandson of William Moore, c’12.

Along with his artistic talents as ayearbook photographer and photography editor, Andrewproved his academic talent as a Kansas Honor Scholar andhis athletic prowess on the links, lettering in golf four years.His mother is Diane Anderson Burnside, c’81. Andrew’s KUline continues through his father, Bradley Burnside, b’79,g’80, grandparents, Clyde Jr., c’50, and Nancy Davis Burn-side, ’51; and great-grandfather, Clyde Burnside Sr., ’23.

Iowa native Jessica LynnChrist might be hours fromMount Oread, but she’sclose to her Rock Chalkroots. Jessica follows threegenerations of KU men, in-cluding her father, David

Christ, c’76, m’79; grandfather, Vincent Christ, c’44, m’46;and great-grandfather, Aloysius Christ, ’15. The SpencerHigh School graduate comes prepared for college life afterachieving a perfect 4.0 GPA and going to state competitionsin both volleyball and track. After participating in choir andshow choir throughout her high school years, Jessica will bea great addition to the student section in Allen Field House,where she’ll carry a KU tune.

Madison Moore Clay is sure to make agraceful transition from Shawnee MissionWest High School to life at KU. She dancedher way through high school on the danceteam four years and as an instructor forgirls across the country. After receivinghonors from the National Dance Alliance,

Madison will make the move from leotard to business suitwith plans to study business ad-ministration. Her KU ancestry in-cludes her parents, M. Scott, c’79,and Wendy Francis Clay, ’78, ofLenexa; maternal grandparents,George, ’50, and Carol BuhlerFrancis, j’50, g’71; and great-grandfather, David Buhler,m1904.

Brian Dunmire did hisbest to stay under par dur-ing his four years of golf inhigh school, but he soaredfar above his peers in acad-eme. The Olathe East HighSchool graduate will begin

his life as a Jayhawk with a KU Freshman Honors Scholar-ship on top of 32 hours of college credit already accrued.Brian’s KU kin include his father, David Dunmire, c’83, ofOverland Park; his grandparents, Fred, b’55, and CatherineCampbell Dunmire, c’55; his great-grandfather, Ray “Stuffy”Dunmire, c’15, and his great-grandparents, John Ross, c’13,m’15, and Laura Harkrader Campbell, c’22.

Lauren E.Dunn’s deci-sion to at-tend KU wasmusic to herparents’ ears.An accom-

plished pianist and singer, Lauren has taken her melodic tal-ents all the way to Ireland with the award-winning ShawneeMission East High School Choraliers. Lauren’s artistic apti-tude stems from her mother, Pamela Elliott Pendergast, f’74,as well as her great-grandmother, Edith Mildred PopplewellDunn, ’28, a talented soprano singer. Her paternal KU linealso includes her father, William Dunn, c’73, and his par-ents, William Jr., ’50, and Elizabeth Spratt Dunn, c’49.

Although SamuelFindlay was a varsity foot-ball captain at Shawnee Mis-sion Northwest HighSchool, he found time offthe gridiron to help othersthrough involvement with

Cougars Committed to the Community. Complementing hisinterest in radio and television, Sam plans to pursue filmstudies at KU. His parents are James, ’87, and Kay RobertsFindlay, h’81, of Shawnee. Sam’s maternal Jayhawk lineageincludes his grandparents, Don, d’50, and Jean ProudfitRoberts, ’53; and great-grandfather, Clay Roberts, e’13.

Sara Aurin Finney dreams of the silver screen. A gradu-ate of Washburn Rural High School, she is the recipient ofthe Patricia Joyce Ellis Scholarship and the Topeka Perform-ing Arts Center’s Young Artist of the Year Award for Techni-cal Theatre. Sara plans to pursue a theatre and film degreefrom KU in hopes of becoming a movie director. Her sister,

Anna Finney, welcomes herto the Hill. They follow aslew of engineering gradu-ates, including their father,Keith Finney, e’73; grandfa-ther, Richard Finney, e’48;and great-grandfather, Roy

Finney, e’13, all of whom carried on another family tradi-tion—the firm of Finney and Turnipseed, which has pro-vided structural engineering services to KU for more than85 years.

ErinDeborahFletcher hasbeen practic-ing her pirou-ette and isready for life

as a Jayhawk. In addition to her volunteer work, Erin hasstudied ballet, performing in productions and camps, fornearly a decade. The Shawnee Mission East High Schoolgraduate is the daughter of Robert, c’74, and Carolyn FeeFletcher, h’80, of Leawood. Erin’s maternal grandparentsinclude Chester, c’51, g’52, m’56, and Ardyce Pearson Fee,n’54, and her great-grandfather was Charles Fee, c’17.

Lane Frizell comes to the Hill with atrue appreciation for the KU community.Not only did she letter in both volleyballand basketball at Bishop Seabury Academyin Lawrence, but she also gave her time tocommunity service organizations like theSalvation Army and Habitat for Humanity.

Lane joins her sister, LauraFrizell, at KU. Their parents areEdward “Trip” III, b’76, l’80,g’80, and Allison Miller Frizell,n’81. Lane’s paternal grandpar-ents include Edward “Bud” II,’51, and Barbara Varner Frizell,c’47, and her great-grandfatherwas Ralph Varner, ’11. Her ma-ternal Jayhawk line includesher grandparents, Pleasant Jr.,c’47, and Alice Shankland Miller, ’47, and her great-grand-parents, James, g’35, and Cloris Swartz Shankland, c’29.

Travis Gage won’t have to look far for a familiar face as aLawrence resident and the brother of Jacob Gage, a junior atKU. Their parents are David, b’86, and Mary Remboldt

Gage, c’81,g’01. Travis’spaternal line-age includesgrandparents,John, l’52,and Eleanor

Peck Gage, c’47, and great-grandparents, John Bailey Gage,1907, former Kansas City mayor, and Marjorie Hires Gage,’17. Travis is a Lawrence High School graduate and a letter-winner in both track and football. He’ll be welcomed to theHill just as he welcomed new students to his high school asa member of the LINK team.

KristinKirk, a 10-year veteranof equestriancompetition,graduatedfrom St.

Teresa’s Academy. The Fairway resident also excels in arthistory and fine arts, as evidenced by her scholastic awardsfor drawing and apparel/design. In addition, she partici-pated in drama and community service clubs. Her parentsare Michael, c’69, and Julia Turtle Kirk, c’69. The legacy con-tinues through her maternal family with her grandfather,Howard Turtle, c’34, and great-grandparents, Richard andMartha West Turtle, who attended KU with the classes of1912 and 1911.

BrentLemieuxdidn’t wrestlewith a fear ofmaking a col-lege choice.He simply fol-

lowed his enduring KU legacy after graduating from BlueValley West High School, where he grappled for four yearsand ran cross country for two. Steven, c’82, and Cheri Hay-man Lemieux, n’84, of Overland Park, are his parents.Brent’s maternal grandparents are Clarence Jr., c’57, andLavon Brown Hayman, ’56. His KU lineage began with hisgreat-grandparents, Francis Henry Brown, ’24, and MyrtleWebber Brown, p’24.

John Culver McGuire made a splash at Shawnee MissionEast High School, where he helped his school’s swim teamearn the gold medal three of four years at the state tourna-ment. While he wasn’t singing as lead vocalist for his band,

The Case,Johnny alsoplayed golfand volun-teered forcommunityservice proj-

ects. He joins his sister, Maggie, at KU. Their maternal Jay-hawk line includes their mother, Nancy Alberg McGuire,d’81, and her mother, Joan Culver Alberg, ’53. Johnny’sfather is Charles McGuire, j’76; his paternal grandparentsare Thomas, c’53, m’56, and Geraldine Hesse McGuireVaughan, c’53; and his two great-grandfathers were ClarenceMcGuire, c’28, and Charles Hesse, c’23.

Andrew Meyer follows aKU clan that dates back tohis paternal great-grandfa-ther, Gustoph Rau Jr., e’25.Gus’s daughter, Jappy RauMeyer, c’52, had a son, DanMeyer, who went on to earn

architecture and engineering degrees from KU in 1983.Dan’s son, Andrew, comes to KU this fall as a fourth-genera-tion Jayhawk, ready to enjoy life on the Hill after graduatingfrom Shawnee Mission East High School. Andy participatedin school and church organizations and earned the covetedrank of Eagle Scout.

Emily Jane Moseley hasthe brains and the balance toprosper on the Hill. A com-petitive dancer for 12 years,Emily graduated fromLawrence High School witha flock of honors, including

the Lawrence Breakfast Optimist Academic Scholarship, andrecognition as a Kansas Honor Scholar and Freshman Hon-ors Scholar. Emily was also involved in the Pom Squad andStudent Council. She follows three generations of KUwomen, including her mother, Jane Ogden Moseley, j’79;grandmother, Joyce Bigham Ogden, c’55; and great-grand-mother, Susan Brown Bigham, c’26.

St. Louis native LukeMueller brings smarts andspeed to the Hill from Kirk-wood High School, where heparticipated in soccer andtrack. Luke won the ArmyReserve Scholar Athlete

Award and the Golden ‘K’ Award for academics this year,and hustled through high school with an impressive two-minute 800-meter run. He follows in the footsteps of two sis-ters, Amy Mueller Knutzen, d’04, and Megan Mueller, d’07.They are the children of Michael and Monica MichenerMueller, h’79. KU grandparents are William Michener Jr.,b’54, and the late Jane Henry Michener, n’55. Luke’s great-grandparents included William Michener, m’10, and AileeDecker Henry, ’26.

Megan Murray alreadyhas made a name for herselfat KU after graduatingmagna cum laude from Wi-chita Collegiate School. Shehas been admitted to the KUHonors Program, named a

Watkins-Berger Scholar and received a Koch FoundationScholarship. Along with her academic accomplishments,Megan lettered in volleyball throughout high school, andput her spirited attitude to use in the band and pep band.Her KU line extends from her father, Daniel Murray, b’80,g’81, to her grandparents, Max, b’54, and Carol StockhamMurray, c’57, and finally to her great-grandfather, KansasSupreme Court Justice John Fontron, l’26.

ColbyNelsonearned thetitle of East-ern KansasLeagueScholar Ath-

lete as a discus thrower for Blue Valley Northwest HighSchool. He plans to study pre-law at KU. He and his brother,Chris, follow their parents, Jeffrey, b’77, l’80, and Lisa SnookNelson, c’82, of Overland Park. Their paternal grandparentsare Stanley, c’50, l’50, and Rosemary Gaines Nelson, c’49.Stanley is the son of Carl Nelson, a longtime professor andchair of biochemistry, and Hearty Brown Nelson, whotaught English at KU during the World War I era. Colby’smaternal grandfather is William Snook Jr., e’50, son-in-lawof Ray Gfeller, ’31.

She was a four-year varsitytennis player and two-year varsity track team member atShawnee Mission East High School, where she also qualifiedfor a DECA international competition. Courtney’s father isCharles Newell, b’78, and her paternal grandfather is PaulNewell, ’42. Her KU line extends further back on her mater-nal side, which includes her mother, Elizabeth NewtonNewell, b’80; grandparents, George, c’51, and Nancy SeamanNewton, c’52; and great-grandmother, Nelle ThomasonWatkins, ’26.

LindseyKay Nicholshas an eye fordesign. Whileat ShawneeMission WestHigh School,

she earned several awards for her work on the yearbookstaff. The Lenexa native also participated in soccer. Her par-ents are Gregory, c’86, and Jill Ostenberg Nichols, j’85. Lind-sey’s paternal grandfather is Miles Nichols, c’58, and on hermaternal side are her grandparents, John, ’62, and DianeCoen Ostenberg, c’62, and great-grandfather, Wilbur CoenJr., c’33.
