Cultural Awareness:The Indispensable Basics
Greetings (Aisatsu) is an important tool for reaching out to
Japanese. Warm hello or a friendly good morning may bevalued more than you realize.
Dont be Punctual, BE EARLY. Reach early and be all readyto start work at least 15 minutes before official start time.
No personal calls/sms. No personal e-mails, No Facebook!Keep personal phone on silent/vibration mode.
Don't Eat/Drink at your desk. Keep your workplace Clean.
Don't use lots of hand gestures, point, or use the "OK" sign(which in Japan means money). The Japanese do not talk withtheir hands, and pointing is considered rude.

Cultural Awareness:The Indispensable Basics
Hear One Understand Ten ( i ch i i eba juu wo sh i ru ) sums upJapanese communication style. Always take notes.
First of all, Listen Carefully. Do not interrupt a person whenhe/she is speaking. Allow speakers time to make their point.
Dont start your reply with But or No. Such wordssound arrogant and impolite to Japanese. State yourdisagreement in more subtle words.
Japanese are well aware that use of the word "difficult" aboutan idea means it will not work. Being unavailable formeetings to discuss it, or ignoring or changing the subjectalso communicates the same message.

Cultural Awareness:Some More Business Tips
Tip 1: Relationships drive business in Japanese companies.Without the right depth of relationships with the right people,it can be very difficult to achieve anything.
Tip 2: Age brings its own dignity and should be respected.
It is important to show respect appropriately. It is probable, therefore, that more will be achieved with a delegation thatcontains some older members.
Tip 3: Avoid showing irritation, annoyance or impatience.
Try to be polite and diplomatic at all times. These negativeemotions could put a strain on the development of therelationship.

Cultural Awareness:Some More Business TipsTip 4: Avoid putting the Japanese in situations where they might
be forced to lose 'face'. Do not try to push for decisions ordeadlines.
Tip 5: Decisions are arrived at through a lengthy consensus-building process. As it is almost impossible to speed up this
process, patience is needed.
Tip 6: Perform as many favours for people as possible. Favoursmust always be repaid.
Tip 7: Be humble and apologetic rather than arrogant and brash.Modesty is a characteristic much admired whereas forwardnessand being overly self-confident can be seen as childishbehaviour.

Cultural Awareness:Some More Business Tips
Tip 8: As the Japanese are loath to say 'no' or disagree, it can bevery difficult to be completely confident that a decision oragreement has been reached.
Tip 9: Do not overestimate the levels of comprehension whenspeaking English with Japanese. There are many fluentspeakers of English but many people do not understand evenwhen they indicate that they have.
Tip 10: Go over the same point several times from differentangles to check the situation. Ask lots of open questions to testfor understanding.
