Transcript of JAPANESE FOLK MUSIC Presented September 12th COME ON …greenhillsrc.org/newsletters/FPN 2019...
Explore Japanese folk music through magical melodies and striking rhythms performed by Hikaru at 6:00PM Thursday, September 12th, in Foundation Hall. This group consists of four well-trained and studied musicians from different areas of Japan. Each member has studied the deep traditions of their instruments and styles such as the Tsugaru-Shamisen, Taiko drums, and the Shinoboe flute. They will perform a style of music called Tsugaru-Shamisen that originated in the northernmost area of the Japanese island of Honshu. Hikaru is one of four international music groups to bring their vibrant flavor, instruments, language and culture to entertain and enrich the lives of Logan County residents during the next two years as a result of the city of Bellefontaine and Holland Theatre’s selection as the Ohio site for the 2019-2021 Arts Midwest World Fest. The Hikaru performance in Foundation Hall is free and open to the public.
“Logan County has a rich cultural life, but many of us can’t travel around the world. Thanks to Arts Midwest and support from the National Endowment for the Arts and 3Mgives, this
program brings the world to our doorstep. “
-Holland Theatre managing director Chris Westhoff

Do you remember the very
first time you looked at your
self in the mirror? Well that’s
a silly question you may say,
“Of course I don’t remember
that.” But somebody does.
It’s probably your mother or
your father. They remember it
with fondness, and if you were
to ask them to recount the
story they would with a smile on their face and a
twinkle in their eye.
Then as we grow we spend more time looking in
the mirror, to make sure our hair is in place, our
looks are perfect, and that we are just adorable.
Today, because of the cell phone people are selfie
obsessed (If you need help with knowing what a
selfie is-just ask your grandchildren or great grand-
children). We like to look at ourselves, because we
are adorable.
Then as we age we don’t like to look in the mirror.
Sometimes its just plain scary. If we do look in the
mirror we tend to see the flaws, the regrets, the
missed opportunities, the tragedies, the disappoint-
ments, and the heartaches. Then I had this thought
- what if someone else is looking in the mirror and
sees all that I don’t see. This last thought occurred
to me when I came across a poem. The poem is en-
titled “The Weaver”. Take some time to read it.
Paul, as he writes to the Corinthians reminds them,
“Now we see things imperfectly, like puzzling reflec-
tions in a mirror, but then we will see everything
with perfect clarity. All that I know now is partial and
incomplete, but then I will know everything com-
pletely, just as God now knows me completely.”
1 Corinthians 13:12 (NLT)
Today, I don’t understand all the whys, the hurts, or
even all the disappointments. I only see the under-
side of the rug as it is being weaved, but I take great
comfort that God sees the topside, and blends the
gold, the silver, the purple, and the crimson into the
dark threads I see and together they form a beauti-
ful pattern.

BIRTHDAYS September
THE WEAVER
My life is but a weaving
Between my Lord and me.
I cannot choose the colors,
He weaves so steadily.
Oft times He weaveth sorrow
And I in foolish pride,
Forget He sees the upper,
And I the underside.
Not till the loom is silent
And the shuttles cease to fly,
Will God roll back the canvas
And explain the reason why.
The dark threads are as needful
In the Weaver’s skillful hand
As the threads of gold and silver
In the pattern He has planned
-B.M. Franklin
