Japan has a population of 126 million people.

12 million people live in the capital city of Tokyo.

Advancements in medicine, healthier lifestyles and industrial growth, meant people are living for longer and the

population has grown quickly.

Whilst Japan is famous for its cities filled with skyscrapers, they also have many

traditional temples and shrines.

Tokyo won the bid to host the 2020 Olympics.

Japan is the only remaining country to have a reigning emperor. They have no

real power, but are still greatly respected.



The main religions in Japan are Shinto and Buddhism.

Popular foods are rice, fish and vegetables. They contain very little fat and are high in vitamins and minerals.

Sushi is a Japanese dish. It is eaten with chopsticks.

Slurping noodles, rather than being impolite, is seen as a sign of enjoying

your meal and is encouraged.

The official language in Japan is Japanese. Most of it is written in kanji.

There are over 2000 kanji to learn.

The official currency of Japan is Yen ¥.¥1 is worth approximately 0.7p



Japan is home to the bullet train. It can travel up to 200mph.
