• GSJ has held the international training course for young geological researchers and engineers from the CCOP member countries since 2018.

• Offering the participants an opportunity to improve their practical geological survey techniques and to construct international human network.

• Providing comprehensive and practical program on field survey techniques, data analysis, visualization, and application.

• The Trilateral GeoSummit has been held biennially since 2015 with the aim of (1) the progress of geoscientific research by strengthening the partnership and promoting joint

research activities among China (CGS), Korea (KIGAM) and Japan (GSJ), and (2) taking a leading role together in the accumulation and utilization of geological information in

East and Southeast Asia. • The Third GeoSummit, hosted by Japan, focuses on the four subjects for the Technical Sessions:

Active Fault, Coastal Geology, GIS, and 3D Geological Modeling.

The Third Trilateral GeoSummit (July 29 - 31, 2019, Sapporo & Toyako-cho, Japan)

2-3. Provision of geological information 8

Geohazard: Earthquake & Tsunami, Volcano eruption, Landslide & Flood From Jan. 2019 to Oct. 2019

In the last year, many natural disasters hit Japan and broad area were affected. GSJ promptly provides the related geological information to the public and conducts emergency survey as necessary.

In 2019 • Kumamoto Earthquake (3 Jan.) • Yamagata-Oki Earthquake (18 Jun.) • Mount Aso volcano eruption (16 Apr.) • Mount Asama volcano eruption (7 Aug.) GSJ sent the field survey team on 8 Aug. Mount Asama

(15:00, 8 Aug. 2019) Sampling of volcanic ash

• Heavy rain in Kyushu (27-28 Aug.) (4 people dead) • Typhoon Faxai (9 Sep.) (1 person dead) • Typhoon Hagibis (12-13 Oct.) (90 people dead) • Heavy rain in Kanto (25 Oct.) (10 people dead)

2-4. News & Press Release -1:50,000 geological map- 10

1:50,000 geological map of “Itoigawa” Press Release on September 19, 2018 The Itoigawa area is located in

the southwestern Niigata Pref. ISTL is a major tectonic line

that geologically separates northeast and southwest Japan.

The ISTL has been fragmented by

orthogonal fault complex become inactive in its

northernmost part both areas have been

synchronously uplifted

So, ISTL is neither a transform fault nor a

collision boundary it is not a plate boundary as

has been thought

2-4. News & Press Release -1:50,000 geological map- 11

1:50,000 geological map of “Minobu” Press Release on October 29, 2018

The west of Mt. Fuji A key area to understand the

formation process of the archipelago. The Itoigawa-Shizuoka Tectonic Line • runs through the middle of the area

from north to south, and • Is the boundary between the

Shimanto Belt and the Fossa Magna. The area • is at the north end of the assumed

focal region of the Tokai Earthquake, and

• belongs to a tectonically active subduction zone.

2-4. News & Press Release -1:200,000 geological map- 12

1:200,000 geological map of “Kochi”, 2nd Edition Press Release on November 1, 2018

A characteristic geology of accretionary complex and metamorphic rocks formed by subduction of an oceanic plate under a continental plate.

Geological strata of a wide range of ages from the Cambrian to the Quaternary are distributed.

The number of legends has considerably increased from 40 in 1st edition to 160 in 2nd edition.

Active faults, underground resources, and gravity anomaly are also included in the new edition.

2-4. News & Press Release -hydrogeological map- 13

Digital hydrogeological maps on the internet Press Release on May 31, 2019

The visualization of groundwater information is an urgent task to understand its distribution and flow.

GSJ has published • The printed hydrogeological maps

since 1957 • The Water Environmental Maps in

CD-format since 2002, and • The web version of the Water

Environmental Maps in 2019. The database enables users to

project each chemical data on a map with a uniform data classification throughout Japan.
