Your investment in graduate education in manage-ment must produce the returns that make it a

worthwhile undertaking. As an applicant to the Japan-focused or China-focused MBA (JEMBA/CHEMBA),you will also be looking at other top MBA programs. Allof these programs will give you a solid foundation in theprinciples of management, taught by faculty with inter-national reputations.

The advantage of the Japan-focusedor China-focused MBA is that it willprovide you with a real internship at a company in Japan, China, or the United States, giving you a solidunderstanding of doing business inthose countries. In the JEMBA orCHEMBA program you will becomeproficient in business Japanese orMandarin—while few of your MBA competitors in the jobmarket will have learned a language as intensively. Fewer still will havecombined their language skills with a three-month internship at a leading

company. An even smaller number will have pursued their education

in the truly multicultural class-room and social environmentthat Hawai‘i offers.

Global Network Becoming a participant in the JEMBA/

CHEMBA network beginswith the admission process,

which produces a cohort of stu-dents that are among the most inter-esting people you will ever meet.Participants are from the UnitedStates, Asia, and Europe. This uniqueblend of nationalities makes for a

dynamic group of participants and thesmall class size allows for lively interac-tion, teamwork, and support.

Language-Enriched Curriculum At the outset of the Japan-focused orChina-focused MBA program, stu-dents delve into core MBA courses in marketing, finance, organizationalbehavior, and strategy. As the programprogresses, advanced courses in inter-national business focus on Japan andChina. Integrated throughout the program are Japanese and Mandarinbusiness language and communicationcourses—while the final month of lan-guage classes are conducted immer-sion-style, preparing you for active lan-guage use during your internship.

Capstone Internship The internshipat a business or company in Japan orChina, or with a global company in the United States that has ties to Japanor China, is the definitive experiencefor all Japan-focused and China-focused MBA students, bringing to theforefront the business knowledge, lan-guage, and intercultural skills learnedin the course-work. During the intern-ship, you will be at one firm but will

have access through your classmates toa core group of companies (see list onpage 9). Moreover, you will begin toestablish your own network of contacts.

Asia-Focused Degree At the end of your internship, you and your class-mates will receive your MBA degree ata ceremony in Japan. You will also beawarded the Japan-focused or China-focused Management Certificate, reflecting your intensive language andculture studies. It is also during theinternship that you will be finalizingyour post-graduation employmentplans. Many graduates have remainedin Asia to work (where there are activealumni groups); others have returnedto their home countries. Nearly allhave found satisfying, challenging leadership positions in interesting andinnovative companies, where they cancontribute not only to their firms butalso to the societies in which they live.

As a JEMBA or CHEMBA graduateprogressing throughout your career, you will draw on the network of contacts you made in graduate school,in Hawai‘i, and during your internship. This network will grant you inside, firsthand information on Asian affairsand reaffirm the business and personalrelationships that began in the uniqueMBA program you attended inHawai‘i. Such is the JEMBA andCHEMBA advantage.

The JEMBA/CHEMBA capstone is a three-monthinternship at a company or organization in Japan or

China, or at a company with strong ties to Japan orChina doing business in the United States. As interns, participants practice Japanese or Chinese business andcommunication techniques and learn how to conductbusiness, Asian-style.

Internship: Practical, Real-World Experience in Asia

The Japan-focused/China-focusedinternship arrangements begin duringthe first semester in Hawai‘i with anorientation by the JAIMS staff toassess each student’s area of interest(for example, banking, manufacturing, trade, marketing, finance).

The JEMBA internship is underthe supervision of Dr. Ikujiro Nonaka, professor of the HitotsubashiUniversity, Graduate School ofInternational Corporate Strategy, withadministrative support provided bythe JAIMS Japan Office in Tokyo. TheCHEMBA internship is supervised byDr. Wilfried Vanhonacker, dean andvice president, of the China Europe

International Business School(CEIBS) in Shanghai.

Students work full-time at theirhost organizations, engaged in day-to-day operations to the extent possible, and periodically consult with theirinternship supervisor. In November, students are required to submit a finalreport and give an oral presentationabout their internship. The internshipposition is unpaid, and the studentbears all expenses incurred (housing, meals, transportation).

While the JEMBA/CHEMBAprogram cannot guarantee a particulartype of internship or organization, everyeffort is made to match students withinternships reflecting their preferences.

Naturally, the

JEMBA program

provided me with

a comprehensive

understanding of

international busi-

ness and Japanese

management. But

more importantly, the true knowledge

learning in the JEMBA program came

from my classmates. Each student—

unique in his and her own right yet

united through the JEMBA program—

offered me a tour of each of the

10 countries represented in our class.

I couldn’t have received such an educa-

tion from any other place. Together we

were able to intertwine our knowledge

to produce a realistic understanding of

the global market around us.

Q: Is it necessary to have a back-ground in Japanese or Mandarin in order to qualify for the program? Will participants without languageproficiency be at a definite disad-vantage?

A: Prior knowledge of the language of study is a distinct advantage; however, on average about 30 percentof the individuals entering the programshave no previous experience with eitherthe language or the culture of Japan or China. The language of instructionfor all business courses is English, and only the business language courserequires the use of either Japanese or Mandarin.

Based on a language placement test, students are assigned to classesappropriate for their level of languageability. Each class is tailored to providestudents with comprehensive skills in reading, writing, and speaking.Business and industry terminology is incorporated into role play thatmimics situations experienced duringthe in-country internship. In suchways, students rapidly build the neces-sary survival skills to get the mostfrom the internship experience.

Q: Are students permitted to waivecertain courses if they have priorexperience?

A: The Japan-focused/China-focusedMBAs are designed as cohort pro-grams. Each student is expected toparticipate with the group in allcoursework, contributing to the classin areas of special expertise and bene-fiting from class members in areaswhere background knowledge andexpertise may be less well-developed.Because each student adds importantqualities to the richness of the groupby bringing different cultural andbusiness perspectives to class discus-sions and group work, course waiversand substitutions are not generallyapproved.

Q: How computer-literate shouldstudents be when entering theprogram?

A: It is strongly recommended thatincoming students know how to usebasic computer spreadsheet, word pro-cessing, presentation, and communica-tions applications before beginningthe program. Tutorials offered at thebeginning of the program give a basicbackground in many computer-basedtechnologies.

classes allow professors to be flexible

to address areas that interest the stu-

helped me prepare for the fast-paced

Additionally, the international student

I am confident

that the things

I learned—academic, professional,

the future.

The carefully balanced academic

academe and industry, the stimulating

interaction between peers, professors,

have provided me with the framework

to understand, appreciate, and person-

More important, the deep friend-
