The JASM Annual Meeting for 2011 will be held next Tuesday, April 3rd at the Riverplace Conference room, 1st floor (near Kikugawa), 43 Main St SE Minneapolis, MN 55414 beginning at 6:30pm. The event is free, and all members (both corporate and individual) are invited to attend. We highly encourage everyone to come out and participate, as this is the one opportunity each year for members to voice their opinions about JASM and be actively involved in its proceedings. Items to be discussed include a review of 2011 events and budget, election of new officers, a short speech by the current JASM president, and plans for future JASM events. The meeting is expected to last for 45 minutes to an hour and light appetizers will be served. Afterwards, everyone is invited to Kikugawa for independent socializing and networking. JASM 40th Anniversary Local Japanese businesses display children’s drawings The Kizuna project, supported by the Consulate General of Japan at Chicago, is an exhibition of pictures drawn by children from the areas effected by the earthquake and tsunami in Japan. Students from six different elementary schools from the towns of Onagawa, Miyagi Prefecture; Matsushima-City in the Nobiru area, Miyagi Prefecture; and the village of Iitate, Fukushima Prefecture drew pictures. The themes are “Thank you, people from around the world”, “Myself in 10 years”, and “Things I want to do”. These pictures were displayed with encouraging photos and messages from around the world at the Global Festival Japan in Tokyo – Hibiya park and at the World Collaboration Festival in Nagoya. In order to express this “Thank you” to everyone who supported the Japan earthquake and tsunami relief efforts, the pictures were displayed at Japanese restaurants and Japanese item stores that are currently contributing to JASM from March 19th to the 31st. If you did not get a chance to see the pictures, they will be at the JASM office until the end of April. Feel free to contact our office about opportunities to view the photos or to learn more about the project before we send them back to

It is with sadness that we announce the death of Edson White Spencer who passed away on March 25th. Edson Spencer was a founding member of JASM and served as President of JASM in the early years of the Society. Edson and his wife, Harriet, were recognized for their many contributions to JASM and the Japan related community in Minnesota with the presentation of the Mondale Award for Japan - Minnesota Partnership in 2002. Edson Spencer had a distinguished career with the Honeywell Corporation, serving as the Regional Manager for Honeywell Asia based in Tokyo, 1959-1964 and later served as the President of Honeywell, 1973 – 1987. Following his years at Honeywell, Edson Spencer demonstrated his international leadership and extensive knowledge of U.S. – Japan relations when serving as the chairman of the Commission on U.S. – Japan Relations for the 21st Century. Edson also served on the U.S. Japan Business Council and the Trilateral Commission. Together with Harriet, Edson made many generous contributions to JASM, including membership on the Sakura Circle. We will miss his dedication, vision, and abiding commitment to JASM and the Japan related community in Minnesota.

40th Anniversary Concert In celebration of the 40th Anniversary of the Japan America Society of Minnesota (JASM), we are pleased to present a concert of classical music and jazz at Sundin Hall at Hamline University on Sunday, June 3rd, 2012. The program will feature both Western and Japanese music by musicians of Ladyslipper (pictured below), a St. Paul based baroque ensemble featuring soprano, Sahar Hassan, violinist, Margaret Humphrey, and composer and harpsichordist, Asako Hirabayashi. They will be joined by other musicians, both Japanese and American, in a program that spans classical and contemporary themes and will appeal to a wide and diverse audience. We believe that it is a special opportunity for us to offer this unique musical concert to the Japan related community of Minnesota. The concert is free and a reception will precede the performance. Reception is expected to begin sometime around 3:00pm. More information to come.

Mondale Scholarship for 2012-13 The Japan America Society of Minnesota (JASM) will award the Mondale Scholarship to Minnesota undergraduate students enrolled in Minnesota colleges and universities who want to broaden their knowledge of Japan through a combination of study and travel. JASM will offer up to $3,000 in scholarships for the 2012-2013 academic year. The selection committee has the discretion to award up to three $1,000 scholarships or two $1,500 scholarships. The awards are specifically to be used for travel to or within Japan before, during, or after the student’s specified term(s) of study. 2012 Mondale Award The United States has a long history of sending top-notch people to serve as Ambassador to Japan, and Minnesota’s own Walter Mondale certainly fits the description. As a former Vice President and Senator, he was dubbed O-mono (a “magnate”) by the Japanese press when President Bill Clinton appointed him in 1993. He served with distinction, earning praise in both countries for his deft handling of trade disputes and a serious diplomatic crisis involving U.S. military personnel. After his return to Minnesota in 1997, the Japan America Society of Minnesota created the Mondale Award for Japan-Minnesota Partnership to recognize outstanding contributions to the building of understanding, cooperation, and respect between the people of Japan and Minnesota. The Award was named for—and first presented to—Joan and Walter Mondale to recognize his service as Ambassador and their ongoing efforts to promote cultural exchange in both countries. This review has one disclaimer: I arrived late to the sushi party. When I was young I demurred and dismissed the bottom-feeding fish right off my plate. Only recently have I discovered its gastronomic wonders. This pent up demand has unleashed an obsessive compulsion to learn more about it. The Sushi Economy satiates this desire. The Sushi Economy traces the global macroeconomic forces enabling the remarkable, nascent appetite for raw fish. Issenberg’s scholarship connects all the dotted lines and hits all the marks to explain the journey of the tuna in the global marketplace. He delves into the Tsukiji fish auction in Tokyo, boards tuna fishing boats in Glouchester, Massachusetts, inspects retrofitted cargo bellies of 747s, visits tuna ranches in Australia and examines sushi kitchens in Texas, all to explain this modern culinary phenomena. The Sushi Economy includes a counter-intuitive history. Surprisingly, sushi is quite modern. It began as convenient, street food sold at Tokyo kiosks in the mid-eighteenth century. Read: fast food. It was intended to be eaten on the run rather than at a table. The decline of the feudal samurai coincided with the emergence of the modern sushi chef. An argument can be made that the sushi chef inherited the samurai’s knife wielding skills and his code of courtliness. The sushi we now enjoy is really a twentieth century invention resembling little of its former mixture. In fact, modern sushi was born, -are you ready, in Canada. Although we regard it as Japanese cuisine, -which it is, it has mutated with international acceptance, -which it should. We now have California rolls, B.C. rolls, dynamite rolls, Alaska rolls, etc. For JASM members, I suspect it will come full circle someday with a Walleye Roll. There are now over 10,000 sushi bars just in the United States. Said in another way: one sushi bar for every 28,575 Americans. Sugoi! And, of course, we have corporate sushi. It is best identified by ubiquitous Nobu sushi bars. Issenbeg regards their creator, Nobu Matsuhisa, as a daimyo, -the highest ranking of the samurai warlords. The Sushi Economy reveals the astounding economic consequences supporting the dish. Tuna, once regarded as pariah cat food, are now prized for its toro, fatty and pink belly meat. A wild bluefin from Nagasaki waters recently sold for 11.2 million yen, or just over $150 a pound. Millions of dollars are now spent to construct hotels, -not perforce for lodging, but to showcase sushi bars. And, it is not unusual for an apprentice to toil for ten years until finally reaching the rank of sushi shokunin, fully skilled sushi professional. The Sushi Economy is recommended for only two types of readers: those who like sushi, … and those who want a reason to like sushi. I strongly recommend The Sushi Economy on your reading list menu. Hi everyone! I would like to introduce Ms. Kaori Tada, who just moved to Minnesota for a new job at McQuay, Inc. and is starting a new life here. Since moving to Minnesota, she has encountered many surprises in culture differences between Japan and the U.S. I would like to share her experiences, so please enjoy learning about various aspects of Japanese and US. culture. -Kanna Sato

あっという間にミネアに来て 2ヶ月が過ぎました。

実際にアメリカで暮らしてみて、やっぱりビックリすること

も多かったです。例えば、知らない人でも挨拶や雑談する、

目が合えばにっこり笑う、講義では食べ物を食べながら聞い

ても大丈夫(日本だと失礼にあたる)、左側車線の赤い矢印は

止まれ(矢印は緑色のみで点灯したら進め)、牛乳(whole milk

が日本では普通の濃さ、種類もそんなにない、pasteurizedで

ないとお腹を壊す人もいます。) 牛乳だけでなく食文化での

驚きが多かったので、今回は日本の食文化に関わる最近の流

行についてご紹介します。

Two months have passed since I came here to Minneapolis. I was surprised to find that: people say hello or have small talk with strangers, it is no problem eating something in a lecture (it’s bad manners in Japan), the arrow light is red when making a left turn (green arrow only in Japan), and whole milk is uncommon (there are more kinds of milk than in Japan, but we choose “pasteurized” milk because of the risk of a stomachache). I had many surprises about food, so this time I will introduce you to popular information about Japanese meals.

地球温暖化を心配させるような暖かい３月だったミネソタ。

長くミネアポリスに暮らしていますが、こんな気候で、すでに

花が咲き木々に緑の芽吹くような３月は初めてです。嬉しい

けれど、ちょっと気持ちが悪いような。４月に雪になどならな

いことを願っています。ミネアポリスで生まれ育ったプリンス

の曲に「４月の雪」というのがありますが。

ジャズの話。３月の終わりに、日本だけでなく今や世界で

も注目されるジャズ・ピアニストの上原ひろみさんの何度目

かのミネアポリス・コンサートがありました。必ず年に一度はミ

ネアポリスのジャズ・クラブ「ダコタ・ジャズクラブ＆レストラン」

に出演する彼女。昨年は名ジャズ・ミュージシャン、スタン

リー・クラークのセッションに参加したアルバムがグラミー賞

を受賞するなど、ノリにのっているひろみさん。今回は新し

いメンバーと「トリオ・プロジェクト」というコラボレーションでツ

アー中。ベテラン・ジャズ・ミュージシャンのアンソニー・ジャ

クソン、ジェフ・ベック、ローリング・ストーンズなどとの競演や

現TOTOのドラマーとしても活躍するサイモン・フィリップスと

ともに、相変わらずエネルギッシュで完璧なテクニックを披

露してくれました。

彼女の正確に鍵盤を踊り自在にピアノのキーをあやつるよ

うな、そして激しく情熱的な演奏は、観客を興奮の渦に巻き

込みます。今回はジャクソンの重厚なベースと、フィリップス

の轟くプログレッシブ系のドラムが彼女のエネルギーをさら

にアップさせて、クラブ内に熱いエネルギーが充満した感

じ。明らかに演奏に磨きがかかり、様々な経験を積んだこと

が分かる、素晴らしい演奏でした。

あの華奢な身体と演奏の合間の可愛い声からは想像もで

きないパワフルなピアノ演奏は、毎回観客を総立ちにさせま

す。こういう瞬間、「同じ日本人として誇らしい」という言葉が

浮かんでくるのでした。

今度彼女がミネアポリスに来たら、まだ生演奏をご覧に

なったことのない方々、ぜひ聞いてみてください。

個人的にジャズが好きで、自分のブログにもよく取り上げ

てしまうのですが、ミネアポリスは全米でも第四位にジャズの

盛んな街と言われています。ジャズというとちょっと難しく、

退屈に感じてしまう方もおられるかも知れませんね。あまり馴

染みのない方も、ミネアポリスでぜひクラブでのジャズを一

度お楽しみください。コンサート会場のような場所ではなく、

それこそすぐそばでライブの演奏が聴けるところが醍醐味で

す。私は日本の大きなコンサート会場でそれこそ豆粒のよう

アポリスに住むようになって、そんな有名ミュージシャンたち

をそれこそ、１、２メートルしか離れていない場所で観られた

どころか、話す機会さえありました。こうした体験ができるの

が本当に貴重だと思います。

これから夏になるとジャズ・フェスティバルや、アウトドアで

のライブ音楽も盛んになってきます。身近に音楽を感じる体

験をお薦めします。

Ms. Hiromi Uehara, the famous Japanese Jazz Piano player and Grammy award winner, had a piano concert in Minne-sota at the end of March. Uehara always performs her show at Dakota Jazz & Restaurant in Minneapolis once a year. Currently, Uehara is collaborating on a concert tour with new members called “The Trio Project”. If you have never en-joyed her amazing, energetic, and powerful performance, I deeply recommend you go see her and her wonderful piano playing.

Hiromi Uehara (上原ひろみ)known as Hiromi, is a jazz

composer and pianist born in Hamamatsu, Japan. She is known for her virtuosic technique, energetic live perform-ances, and blend of musical genres such as post-bop, pro-gressive rock, classical, and fusion in her compositions. Her latest album is Voice, released in June of 2011. If you would like to learn more about Hiromi, she has both a website and facebook page, so check her out!

The Japanese Speaking Club is an informal meeting place for those wishing to practice Japanese. We encourage those just beginning the language as well as native speakers to gather at Es-presso Royale Café in Downtown Minneapolis to meet new people, discuss experiences in Japan, or simply to speak Japanese. The Japan America Society of Minnesota is a non-profit,

non-political association engaged in bringing the peoples of

Japan and the United States closer together in mutual

understanding, respect, and cooperation. Through programs

and interchange, it endeavors to promote an appreciation of

A message from Yuzuki Sato(佐藤柚希), 6th grade student

in Miyagi prefecture. -I used plants to represent growing back strong even after being washed away. Even after being damaged, nature bounces back quickly. Not everything in Onagawa was washed away. We got a lot of strength and courage from nature and from everyone around the world. We won't let this beat us.
