OktoEcho is an ensemble of 4 to 22 musicians

established in 2001 under the artistic direction

Canadian compositions that thrust the listener

into a sonic world brimming with hope,

aspiration and lyricism found in the intersection

between the Middle East and the West.

Drawing on Middle Eastern, jazz and

contemporary music, OktoEcho’s new recording

‘The 5th Blue Road’ consists of wonderful music

written by Makdissi-Warren. The quartet goes

from interpretation to improvisation with

virtuosity and finesse.

Art Pepper was one of the greatest alto

saxophonists in jazz history. His career stretched

from the 1940s to his death at age 57 in 1982.

Much of the middle portion of his career was

interrupted by long prison sentences arising

out of his addiction to heroin. However, this

did not affect his ability to play with startling

emotional intensity.

Virtually every recording he made is well worth

a listen. In 1959, he recorded “Art Pepper +

Eleven” for the Contemporary label. A true

classic, Pepper was joined by an eleven piece

band playing Marty Paich arrangements of a

dozen jazz standards from the bop and cool

jazz era such as “Anthropology”, “Donna Lee”,

“Four Brothers” and “Shaw ‘Nuff”. All Music’s

Scott Yanow describes the disc as “essential

music for all serious jazz collections”.

Under the direction of Dean McNeill, some of

Western Canada’s top jazz players join forces to

present a one-time special event of music from

this classic album. Each ensemble member will

be featured throughout the concert. There will

also be repertoire premieres by members of the

group.

Joe Magnarelli/ Gary Smulyan QuintetBaritone saxophonist Gary Smulyan returns

to the Yardbird Suite stage for the first time

since 1999, accompanied on this occasion

by an outstanding but under-appreciated

trumpeter, Joe Magnarelli. They will be joined

by Edmonton’s top rhythm section of Chris

Andrew, Mike Lent and Sandro Dominelli. While

Smulyan is only able to perform for one night at

the Suite, Magnarelli will be here for two nights

performing a different program of music on

Gary Smulyan is critically acclaimed as one of

the major voices on the baritone saxophone

today. He is perennially at the top or near

the top of all polls of baritone saxophonists

including both the Downbeat Critics’ Poll and

the Downbeat Readers’ Poll.

Since joining Woody Herman’s Young

Thundering Herd in 1978, he has worked with

the Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra, Freddie Hubbard,

Stan Getz, Chick Corea, Tito Puente and

many other jazz luminaries. He has recorded

numerous CDs on the Criss Cross and Reservoir

labels. He currently performs with the Vanguard

Jazz Orchestra, the Joe Lovano Nonet, the Dave

Holland Octet and Big Band, The Three Baritone

Saxophone Band, the George Coleman Octet,

the Dizzy Gillespie All Star Big Band and the

Tom Harrell Octet, as well as his own projects.

No matter who he is performing with, Smulyan

brings to the stage the spirit, style and savvy of

a deep-toned master of bebop. “Gary Smulyan’s

lineage comes more from musicians like Cecil

Payne, Leo Parker, Pepper Adams, Serge Chaloff

and Nick Brignola - the few bari players that

dared to master the tricky, chromatic music

known as bebop,” wrote All About Jazz’s Francis

Lo Kee in a review. He was heavily influenced

by Adams’ hearty tone and the energy of his

rhythmic playing style. It goes without saying

that the late Gerry Mulligan was one of his

mentors.

“Smulyan’s tone seems to get bigger and his

ideas more expansive from album to album,”

wrote long-time critic Doug Ramsey in Jazz

Times magazine. Always in search of new ideas,

in 2008 Smulyan released “High Noon -The Jazz

Soul of Frankie Laine”, a nine-piece band tribute

to the prolific 1940s and 1950s pop singer

Frankie Laine. “This is the kind of album whose

melodies linger after the session is over,” wrote

long-time critic, Owen Cordle.

We are fortunate to be able to hear trumpeter Joe

Magnarelli for a second night, performing what

will be in part a tribute to one of the great legends

of the jazz trumpet, Clifford Brown.

Magnarelli moved to New York in 1986. In 1990,

Joe was a semi-finalist at the Thelonious Monk

International Trumpet Competition in Washington,

D.C. Over a career stretching back over 40 years,

“Mags” as he is often known, has been a stalwart

sideman for Lionel Hampton, Brother Jack McDuff,

Harry Connick Jr., Toshiko Akioshi, Ray Barretto,

Louis Hayes, the Maria Schneider Jazz Orchestra,

the Tom Harrell Big Band, the Vanguard Orchestra,

John Pizzarelli, Jane Monheit, Don Sebesky and

many others. He has made several recordings on

a variety of labels.

The title of Magnarelli’s 2008 Reservoir disc

“Persistence” exemplifies a personality trait

required of all jazz musicians, one of several

indispensable qualities an artist must have if

he or she is to survive as a jazz musician - tone,

technique, ears, resourcefulness, adaptability,

ood communication skills, patience, confidence,

individuality, taste, drive, and soul. But perhaps the

most important quality a great jazz musician must

have is persistence. Lots of it. Without it, none of the

other qualities mentioned above can be attained.

And persistence is definitely something that Joe

Magnarelli has demonstrated over his long career.

An interesting aside about the musicians on this

gig is that when Chris Andrew travelled to New

York in 2010 to record his next CD, one of the

musicians he employed was Joe Magnarelli.

Andrew Glover QuintetAndrew Glover is an accomplished pianist and prolific composer. He is credited with a huge body of work which extends to Europe and the U.S., as well as his home town of Edmonton.

A talented pianist and composer, Andrew graduated from the Grant MacEwan Community College, and studied solo piano with Adrian Chornowol and Charlie Austin. Andrew worked with Mike Rud, Jack Semple, Kennedy Jensen, Dianne Donovan, the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, Scott Hamilton and Sheena Easton among others. For over ten years he toured extensively with the Big Miller Band.

In addition, many artists have performed and recorded Andrew’s compositions. Six of the eleven compositions on Jack Semple’s “Grey and Yellow” CD were written by Andrew, as well as four songs for Dianne Donovan’s release “Yes or No”. He was also a principal writer for Edmonton’s ‘Pazzport’. Andrew’s compositions and arrangements have been performed or recorded by John Abercrombie, Pat LaBarbera, Don Thompson, Jean-Pierre Zanella, George McFetridge, Jacek Kochan, and Alfie Zappacosta.

David BraidOne of Canada’s most gifted pianists and composers, David Braid is among a new generation of Canadian artists making his mark on international stages. Combining harmonic intricacies fundamental to his training in European classical music and the spontaneity of American jazz, Braid’s original music engages audiences with a quiet, thoughtful, lyrical voice that does not conform neatly to any one musical genre.

He is a recipient of numerous awards from the Junos to the National Jazz Awards to the Canada Council for the Arts and SOCAN.

Braid graduated from the University of Toronto in 1998. Since that time, he has produced several recordings, garnering four Juno nominations with five ensembles - The David Braid Sextet, Murley Braid Quartet, Brubeck Braid, Nimmons’n’Braid and Davidson/Murley/Braid Quintet (DMBQ). He has performed with all but Brubeck Braid at the Yardbird Suite.

Braid’s most recent focus is on his solo piano compositions and will release his first solo piano recording in 2011.

Griffith Hiltz TrioBefore they were known as The Griffith Hiltz Trio, Johnny Griffith and Nathan Hiltz were longtime friends and occasional collaborators. They would get together for a weekly jam session to play some tunes and talk about the artists they loved including Horace Silver, Lee Morgan and Herbie Hancock. While experimenting with some bass pedals and organs, Griffith and Hiltz discovered an amazing sound and decided to form a band. The result is the Griffith Hiltz Trio. With Griffith on saxophones and bass clarinet and Hiltz on guitar and bass pedals, the trio is completed by Sly Juhas on drums. They incorporate not only the influence of 1960s Blue Note legends but also include Celtic, Norse and Eastern motifs. In early 2008, the trio recorded their debut album ”Now and Then” which was produced by Canadian jazz great Don Thompson. The album has been described as “one of the most compelling and original Canadian jazz albums in recent history.”

Dino Dominelli QuintetDino Dominelli is the essence of Canadian music, infusing his music with diverse genres and cultural influences. Educated at Humber College, Dominelli expanded his mastery through collaborations with renowned Canadian icons ranging from Alfie Zappacosta to Don Thompson. Performing throughout Asia and the Americas, Dominelli experienced the collective human condition through diverse cultures, and this perception saturates his artistic voice. The breadth and diversity of his musical expression made him a staple of the jazz scene throughout Canada.

His range of talent is evident in the release of his debut CD, “Faith in You”. Dino gathered eighteen internationally renowned musicians to create his musical statement. Canadian vocalist Johanna Sillanpaa, originally from Sweden, lends her voice to two arrangements. Legendary guitarists Roberto Zayas, originally from Argentina, and Jack Semple contribute their considerable skills. Semple also provides vocals for the Ray Charles tribute, “Roll With My Baby”. However, beyond

the extraordinary artistic participation, the most notable aspect of “Faith in You” lies in Dominelli’s unique compositions and arrangements.

Dino Dominelli smoothly filters pop, blues, gospel and Brazilian genres through a jazz perspective. Rather than creating any conflict, his skills have provided a complex and original sound. Choosing to cover several modern classics, his arrangements remain loyal to the original artistic flavor, and yet, provide a fresh voice for the familiar. Revealing his versatility, Dominelli’s three original compositions enhance the album while remaining honest to the cohesive essence of the collection.

YARDBIRD SUITE BLUES

Rick Holmstrom BandLos Angeles guitarist Rick Holmstrom returns to the Yardbird Suite with his smoking hot blues roots trio.

For the past twenty years Rick Holmstrom has been one of most dynamic guitarists on the west coast blues scene, playing in bands with William Clarke, Smokey Wilson, Jimmy Rogers, Janiva Magness and Johnny Dyer, to name just a few.

After fifteen years of heavy touring as a sideman, Holmstrom formed his own band in 2002.

He has released four CDs under his own name and has appeared on many others. His groundbreaking CD “Hydraulic Groove” (2002), melded blues with electronic beats, drum loops, and sound sampling. Rick came back to his blues roots with “Late in the Night” (2007). In Holmstrom’s words, “What I’m trying to do, basically, is come up with songs that I want to hear...songs that are simple, that have vivid imagery, strong melodies, and that also have the kind of lowdown, gritty sounds and energy that get my blood pumping. Sort of like early 50’s Sun Records-era Pat Hare meets J.J. Cale on a bender.”

Jeff Turmes grew up in Southern California, taught himself the bass and hit the road with James Harman and Gary Primich. He has worked with Kim Wilson and the Fabulous Thunderbirds, Billy Boy Arnold, Robert Gordon, Canned Heat, and R.L. Burnside among many others. Turmes developed a stellar career as a session musician on electric and acoustic bass, saxophones, guitars, bass clarinet, banjo, and keyboards. His own recordings include “Every Day’s My Lucky Day”, “The Distance You Can Travel”, and this year’s “Five Horses, Four Riders”.

Stephen Hodges is probably best known for his work with Tom Waits, and is one of the best blues drummers in the business. He has performed and recorded with blues greats like James Harman, Charlie Musselwhite, John Hammond, the Fabulous Thunderbirds, and has worked with a who’s who of the roots music scene.

When Mavis Staples was looking for a fresh innovative sound, she hired The Rick Holmstrom Band. They have been touring with Mavis for the last 3 years, and they are featured on her 2008 live CD “Hope At The Hideout” and on her new Grammy-nominated disc “You Are Not Alone”.

East Van StringsEast Van Strings is a guitar/oud, violin, viola and cello quartet inspired by Bartok, Berg and Arabic Taqasim. The members of the ensemble are Gordon Grdina, Jesse Zubot, Peggy Lee, and Eyvind Kang.

Gordon Grdina is a Vancouver-based oud/guitarist whose sound is a combination of his interests in mainstream jazz, free-form improvisation and Arabic classical music. A protégé of jazz great Gary Peacock, he is a well respected contributor to the jazz and world music scenes constantly being sought out for projects that need a fresh sound. Possibly Canada’s most innovative guitarist, his Songlines CD “Think Like the Waves” features Gary Peacock on bass and Paul Motian on drums. His main

touring ensemble Box Cutter is a genre bending modern jazz quartet featuring François Houle that appeared at the Yardbird Suite last June. Other groups in which he participates include the Arabic/Persian/Indian ensemble Sangha; Maqam an oud, violin, bass, and percussion ensemble which explores Iraqi folk melodies from a contemporary improvisational perspective; and the groove trio Loose Acoustic.

Violinist Jesse Zubot is a founding member of the acoustic-roots ensemble Zubot & Dawson. He is also a member of the Great Uncles of the Revolution which includes well-known Toronto bassist Andrew Downing and trumpeter Kevin Turcotte. Both of these recording acts are Juno Award winners. During the past few years, Jesse has delved heavily into the world of creative & improvised music. He has performed and recorded with the likes of François Houle, Eugene Chadbourne, Evan Parker, Mats Gustafsson, Dave Douglas, Peggy Lee, Tony Wilson, Fred Frith, Eyvind

Kang, Dylan van der Schyff, Nels Cline, Joe Fonda, Gerry Hemingway, Henry Kaiser and many others.

Since arriving in Vancouver in 1989, cellist Peggy Lee has participated in numerous creative projects. She is a member of Talking Pictures and the Tony Wilson Sextet which recently performed at the Yardbird Suite. As well, she performs with the NOW Orchestra which has made its musical presence felt through work with Barry Guy, Rene Lussier, Koch, Shutz & Studer, and Butch Morris. Lee also appeared at the Yardbird Suite with Wayne Horvitz’s Gravitas Quartet. She is regarded as one of the finest cellists on the jazz scene today.

Violist Eyvind Kang is one of the most original and exciting musicians currently performing in jazz. He spent some time in Edmonton during his early university years but is now based in Seattle where he is also a jazz educator. He has contributed to the work of such collaborators as Bill Frisell (performing in Edmonton at the 2010 Edmonton International Jazz Festival as a part of the Beautiful Dreamers trio), Wayne Horvitz, John Zorn, Mike Patton, Laurie Anderson, Marc Ribot, Beck, and many others.

“THE DON BERNER SEXTET INVADES CALGARY-LIVE AT THE BEATNIQ!” is the third album release as a leader from saxophonist Don Berner. The new album includes access to an online DVD and is a live recording in the tradition of decades of jazz.

The sextet features the compositional talents of all its members, all very capable bandleaders and composers in their own right. If you’re a fan of the high energy, heavy swing, and intricate compositions of the groups of Dave Holland, Art Blakey, or the Marsalis Brothers, this is a band that carries on those traditions while engaging in new and original material composed in Edmonton!

Jazz icon Hugh Fraser has stated, “Don’s talent as a great saxophonist is supported by his compositional and bandleading talents”. Juno Award winner P.J. Perry has called Don Berner “one of Canada’s fastest rising saxophone stars. Reads, doubles, solos, he does it all.”

In addition to appearing alongside such notable jazz luminaries as P.J. Perry, Bobby Shew, Hugh Fraser, Slide Hampton, Bob Stroup, Chucho Valdez, Lew Tabackin, Guido Basso, Tommy Banks and Hilario Duran, Don has performed at a large number of jazz clubs and festivals throughout Canada, the U.S., and Hong Kong. Berner was co-producer of Edmonton’s Yardbird Jazz Festival in 2005 and 2006 and can be heard on numerous CDs including his own debut CD “Sextet” and his critically acclaimed album “Fortress of Solitude”. Berner maintains a busy performing, lecturing, and teaching schedule. In addition to occasional appearances with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, Berner is formerly the announcer and producer of “A Time For Jazz” on the CKUA radio network. He also regularly does commentary on the Edmonton jazz scene in his column “Jazz Standards” in Edmonton’s SEE magazine. Berner was the director of the Jazzworks small group creative workshops for a number of years and regularly leads his own ensembles from big band to small ensemble.
