Everyone’s Reading 2006 The riveting, true story of two shipwreck divers who discover a World War II U-boat sunk 60 miles off the coast of New Jersey is this year’s Everyone’s Reading Metro Book Club selection. Join readers from Canton Public Library — and other nearby communities — in reading Shadow Divers: The True Adventure of Two Americans Who Risked Everything to Solve One of the Last Mysteries of World War II by Robert Kurson. No one, including the United States Navy and the German government, knew the sub was sitting 230 feet below the frigid Atlantic waters. But for more than six years, John Chatterton and Richie Kohler risked their sanity and their lives as they embarked on a real- life adventure to uncover the identity of the sub and its 56 crewmembers. The book is as gripping as any mystery novel, and the intrigue and suspense make Shadow Divers a page-turner from beginning to end. The best adventure books take readers beyond the danger and heart-racing action to confront questions about human nature. In exploring the odyssey of Chatterton, Kohler and other divers on their team, Kurson examines ideas about how people live and work — about friendship, courage, persistence, demanding excellence and the ability to know when and how to take risks. While researching and writing his book, Kurson came to view all these qualities differently, as he embarked on his own life-changing journey. In Shadow Divers, Kurson challenges readers to think about the adventure of their own lives and work in new and exciting ways. Happy Birthday, Rosa Parks!Rosa Parks, born February 4, 1913, has been called the mother of the civil rights movement and one of the most important women of the 20th century.

On December 1, 1955, Mrs. Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat near the front of a bus to a white passenger. The bus driver had her arrested for violating the law. By “sitting down” for what she believed in and refusing to give up her bus seat, Mrs. Parks made history.
