EWSETA launches new regional office in Cape Town

As part of its commitment to facilitate better

communication between the SETA and its member

employers and stakeholders, the Energy and Water

Sector Education and Training Authority (EWSETA)

opened its first regional office at the premises of

False Bay College (FBC) at the Westlake Campus.

To celebrate, EWSETA had an official opening on

Thursday 20 November 2015 at 2pm where the FBC

CEO and Principal, Cassie Kruger and EWSETA’s CEO,

Errol Gradwell, addressed the audience on the

collaboration envisaged going forward.

Also at that time, details of the research projects

undertaken by the Stellenbosch University Water

Institute (SUWI) and the University of

Johannesburg’s Process, Energy and Environmental

Technology Station were made available.

Better access to regional stakeholders

In Upington in the Northern Cape, EWSETA has

established the Renewable Energy Centre of

Excellence (RECE) at the Northern Cape Rural FET

College and has partnered with some of the world’s

leading renewable energy research centres, which

will play a pivotal role in R&D and lead the

development of sustainable and green skills

courses.“This first office will decentralise the SETA’s

activities and provide an accessible platform for its

member companies to participate in skills

development initiatives and enable them to engage

with the SETA on a one-on-one basis regarding their

respective industries”, commented Mr Errol

Gradwell.

The purpose of these offices is to:

• manage regional EWSETA operations

• implement, develop and ensure best practices

for skills delivery across the regions

• oversee the coordination of skills development

programmes, skills advisory service, career

guidance and work placement across the

regions thereby ensuring that timing, risks,

issues and resource requirements are

dynamically managed

• initiate skills development initiatives that

respond to the National Development Plan

(NDP) and other relevant national and

provincial economic development strategies

that align to the EWSETA Strategy, NSDS III,

Human Resource Development Strategy and

the New Growth Path, to name just a few.

The mandate of EWSETA is to anticipate, build and

manage the skills development and training needs of

the energy and water services sector, through

strategic skills planning within the context of the

NSDS III. It operates in the Electricity, Oil and Gas,

Nuclear, Renewable Energy and Water, Waste &

Sanitation sectors.

MEMBERS MAKING A DIFFERENCE

IBERDROLA INGENIERÍA AND THE NGO BAMBINI DREAM COMM ENCE A SOCIAL

ACTION CAMPAIGN IN SOUTH AFRICA

• The first event entailed a day of sharing between Iberdrola Ingeniería employees and a group of children from the Cape Town suburb of Blikkiesdorp

• The Company will continue working with Bambini Dream; a local NGO that strives to improve the quality of life of the children in the poorest areas of this South African city

Iberdrola Ingeniería, through its employees in South Africa, has initiated a partnership with the organisation

Bambini Dream (www.bambinidream.org), a local NGO that works to improve the quality of life of children living

in the poorest parts of Cape Town.

The first of the events organised by the Company with this association was known as ‘Share your Dreams’, in

which twelve children from the suburbs of Blikkiesdorp in particular situation of exclusion were able to see one of

their dreams become reality during a day organised by the employees of Iberdrola Ingeniería. With this initiative,

the children enjoyed the performance of the magician Larry Soffer, who marvelled both children and adults alike

with his tricks, shared the exhilarating experience of ice skating and a full evening of games.

Finally, the employees of the Company gave a series of gifts that corresponded to the children's main interests,

which they are otherwise unable to develop further for lack of economic resources.

This event gave Company employees a chance to really see the precarious situation in which a large number of

South African children live while learning about an inner suburb such as Blikkiesdorp.

Bambini Dream Foundation collaborates with twelve children in the suburb of Blikkiesdorp, a camp comprising

corrugated sheet metal shacks. The residents nicknamed the camp Blikkiesdorp, which means "Tin Can Town" in

Afrikaans. The camp is home to over 22,000 people, mostly the elderly and children under the age of 16, who live

in conditions of social exclusion, many of them living in families with problems stemming from drugs or alcohol.

Bambini Dream is a non-profit organisation founded by Tarryn Tomlinson, who pursues the social inclusion of

children by bringing them closer to society through art, music and games.

Iberdrola Ingeniería entered the South African renewable energies market after being awarded, in consortium

with the local company Group 5, contracts for the Klipheuwel and Noblesfontein wind farms, respectively 27 MW

and 74 MW (Megawatts) of power capacity. One year later, Iberdrola Ingeniería signed a contract to construct the

Jasper Photovoltaic Plant, whose 96 MW makes it the largest plant of its type on the continent.

Indra Sistemas, S.A. is operating in South Africa since 1998. In 2013 Indra decided to create a subsidiary: Indra

Technology South Africa (Ptv) Ltd. with offices in Sandton City Towers.

Indra has provided through different partners Air Traffic Management (ATM) equipment for the airports of OR

Tambo International Airport Johannesburg, Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, East London, George, Hoedspruit,

Makhado, Overberg, Waterkloof, Laangebaanweg, Mafikeng. The most recent projects include the

implementation of SAP ERP for Enel Green Power RSA (Pty) Ltd and the redesign of of the South African Airways

web page flysaa.com awarded in December 2013.

Indra has participated in the Africa Aero Defense 2014, Air Africa 2014, Africa Rail 2014, Smart Metering & Grids

Africa Summit 2013 (African Utilities Week) and AVI AFRIQUE 2014 (Aviation innovation organized by ATNS).

Our main markets in South Africa are transport (Air Navigation, Buses and Railways). There is also opportunities in

the area of Defense and Public administration with the modernization of the municipalities, for example. Indra is

very committed to South Africa were the number of opportunities seems to be very relevant.

Our experience is that you have to be patient, but persistent with the opportunities. It is very important to be

perceived as local company and to be fully compliant with all regulations in the country, including local

component, B-BBEE…

The involvement in the Chamber of Commerce is something very attractive. Give you the possibility to meet new

people, new companies that are interested in coming to South Africa and we believe that our experience can be

very positive for others. To have new members will give us more capacity to organize more events and more

working groups and with that to have more visibility in the country.

CTAER, new member of the Spanish Chamber of Commerce in South Africa

On the 4th of December 2014, the Advanced Technology Centre for Renewable Energies (CTAER)

became member of the Spanish Chamber of Commerce in South Africa, as well as director in its Board

of Directors. CTAER’s Director General, Prof. Valeriano Ruiz, manifested, “The need for a change in energy systems towards more

sustainable and non-contaminating models is a matter which affects the majority of countries and we are convinced that the solution

lies in international collaboration and implication from society as a whole”.

CTAER is a research centre dedicated to Renewable Energies technology, and based in Andalusia (Spain), one of the southern regions

of Europe. It was established in 2008 in order to continue the development of renewable energy technologies pioneered in Spain. Not

without reason, Spain now claims a 30 to 50 per cent electricity generated from renewable energy resources.

The centre has developed its own research and testing facilities: its Solar Thermal Energy facilities are located in the desert of

Almeria and use the Variable Geometry principle patented by CTAER. The Biomass state of the art laboratories carry out physico-

chemical and energetic analysis of different types of Biomass, and include a test and certification facility for Biomass fueled heating

devises, as well as a 2nd generation bioethanol pilot plant.

Since 2014, CTAER is present in Southern Africa, through its delegate Sol Luca de Tena who is based in Cape Town. During this first

year of introduction into the region CTAER has developed relationships with key stakeholder in the Renewable Energy sector in

Southern Africa, including Public bodies with competence in science, technology and energy, private developers and associations,

and research groups with activity in Solar and Biomass energies in South Africa, Madagascar, Namibia, Botswana and Mozambique,

as well as funding bodies such as the European Commission, the African Development Bank, the World Bank and United Nations

amongst others. Some of the activities which CTAER has undertaken in Southern Africa to date are:

HOSTING OF THE SOUTH AFRICAN GOVERNMENT DELEGATION IN CTAER’S SOLAR FACILITIES (Almeria (Spain), 7 July 2014:

The delegation attended a demonstration of the test facilities and meetings and presentations were carried out by all parties.

PARTICIPATION IN THE NATIONAL SYMPOSIUM FOR RENEWABLE ENERGIES (Cape Town, 17 – 18 July): Participation in the

National Symposium hosted by the Stellenbosch University and supported by the SolarPaces organization, of the International

Energy Agency. CTAER exposed a poster and made a presentation on its variable geometry test facilities.

TECHNICAL VISIT TO THE COMMERCIAL RENEWABLE ENERGY PLANTS IN SOUTH AFRICA (West and Northern Cape, 30 June-

3 July): This tour attended by CTAER researchers, included the universities in South Africa with competence in Renewable

Energy research as well as the public agency for Technology and Innovation.

CTAER RESEARCHER SOJOURN IN SOUTH AFRICA (Cape Town, 20 June – 23 July): CTAER’s solar researcher, Miguel Frasquet,

carried out a scientific sojourn in the Solar Thermal Energy Research Group – STERG – with the objective of preparing a joint

proposal for the European Science programme Horizon 2020, as well as to increasing relationships with this research group.

CTAER DIRECTOR GENERAL VISIT TO SOUTH AFRICA AND MADAGASCAR (20 September – 19 October): The centre’s DG visited

both countries maintaining meetings with key entities in both the public and private sectors, as well as visiting Renewable

Energy Commercial and Research facilities in South Africa.

After this introductory year CTAER in Southern Africa is open for collaboration in new projects in research, technology development

and testing, technical assistance, consulting and specialized training. For more information visit: http://www.ctaer.com/en
