HAPPY NEW YEAR! We are so happy to share this new year with all of you and we look forward to bringing bigger and better things to Western Berks. If you are a team captain and have been attending the monthly meetings, you know that we have A LOT of exciting ideas floating around and we need your help to implement them! 2010 was SUCH an exciting year for Western Berks! We held our first-ever HOPE Carnival and it was an OVERWHELMING success! Let’s just take a look at some of our 2010 statistics: 2010 STATS: Registered Participants – 683, Registered Survivors – 237, Luminaria - 578 Event total - $169,691.14 W-O-W! This took us to #1 in BERKS County!!! WE DID IT!! Western Berks is currently ranked #3 in the region (made up of the surrounding 12 counties). We have no doubt that if we work together, we will take this event to #1 in the region in 2011! Our event goal in 2011 is $172,000 and with the heart and soul of all of you, we have no doubt that we will blow that number right out of the water, just as we did last year (for those of you that don’t know, our 2010 goal was $148,748 and we ended up raising $169,691.14! GREAT JOB EVERYONE!) Because the HOPE Carnival was such a success, we will be hosting the “2 nd Annual HOPE Carnival” at the Relay event in June! More details to follow in the coming months! Keep your eyes on the newsletters! We hope to make the carnival even bigger and better in 2011! Thank you for all of your hard work in 2010 and we look forward to working side-by-side with you in 2011 to make a difference in the fight against cancer! Whether it’s a corporate sponsorship, in-kind donation, or an ad in the program recognition book, the Relay for Life of Western Berks is looking for sponsorships! Our sponsorship goal for 2011 is $19,000. In addition to the sponsorship committee looking for sponsors, we ask that teams reach out to their 2010 sponsors and ask those sponsors to recommit to 2011. We have succeeded in making Western Berks the BEST IN BERKS! Don’t you want to help make Western Berks the best Relay in the REGION?! I sure do…please help reach our sponsorship goal!

Sponsor dollars are used in all kinds of ways. From ACS’s toll-free information line to programs such as Road to Recovery, these dollars can be seen at work. The American Cancer Society is the largest source of private, not-for-profit cancer research funds in the country. Sponsorship dollars can help grow that source and improve the cancer research.

We need sponsors ranging from a Relay Sponsor of $250 to the Presenting Sponsor for the Berks County Relays of $15,000. The best part about sponsorships is that they count toward your team goal! Every dollar of a sponsorship is banked against the name of the person who obtained the sponsorship! Talk about increasing your team total quickly! A sponsor can be a business, an individual, or even a team that wants to contribute $250 or more to the American Cancer Society/our Relay. Go get them, folks! They are out there, right now, in our community…just waiting to give their sponsorship dollars to some organization. Let’s bring them to the American Cancer Society! Please visit our website at www.relayforlife.org/pawesternberks for more information and to download a copy of the sponsorship levels & sponsor registration form. Or feel free to email your event Chair, Denise Pasko at [email protected].

The Relay For Life of Western Berks will host our first “Reflective Gardens”. We would like to give special thanks and gratitude to WATERFALL GARDENS for being our 2011 garden sponsor. This special garden allows you to step back from the activities of Relay and take a moment to “Reflect” in this reserved garden of beautiful small trees and flowers surrounded by “Special Luminary bags”. The garden will be a special place for you to remember your loved ones who lost their battle with cancer and to cherish our Survivors who are winning their fight against cancer. This beautiful garden can only host a limited number of special Luminary bags, so take this opportunity to purchase your Luminary bags now to be placed in our first “Reflective Garden.” For more information, please visit our website www.relayforlife.org/pawesternberks and click on the Luminaria tab on the left side. Or contact Jay Musser at 610-927-2893 or by e-mail at [email protected] or Tina Grab by e-mail [email protected].

Let’s kickoff 2011 with a Survivor Challenge! We are looking for each team to register 10 Survivors. You can register the Survivors online, or you can fax the Survivor registration form to Mabel at 1-866-732-0830 or email it to her at [email protected]. For all the teams that meet the 10 Survivor Challenge there will be a special event at Relay in June.

Update ~ Please take note May Lobby Day ~ OTP ~ Other Tobacco Products PA Lobby Days will be held on May 3-4-5, 2011 called Rolling Lobby Days. Rolling Lobby Days is to urge lawmakers to stop giving smokeless tobacco and cigars a tax break. Also, to remind them that funds are needed in Pennsylvania to restore dollars to breast and cervical cancer programs, tobacco prevention and cessation services. In the state budget for 2011, there are no new or increased tobacco taxes. Unfortunately, Pennsylvania remains the state in the nation without a state tax on smokeless tobacco. Cigarettes and cigarillos do not have a state tax of $1.60 per pack. Smokeless tobacco and some cigars are a cheaper alternative to kids. Each region in PA will be assigned a specific day to attend so that we have a presence on all three days. The fountain outside the Capitol will be turned purple. The idea is to display the power of purple and the strength of the 85,000 CAN members. Participants will be asked to wear Relay gear. There will be transportation from regions by bus paid for by ACS. The survivor shirts that everyone is asked to sign at meetings will be presented to the legislators. The message will be to close the loop on the tobacco tax to include smokeless tobacco and cigars (OTP). There will be more on the Rolling Lobby Days to follow in the near future. Also, this is a great time to help Western Berks Relay for Life in reaching our We CAN Club Event Goal for 2011 of 100 ACS CAN members. Please let your voice be heard and fight back through Advocacy. Anyone can register online by visiting the website at www.acscan.org. Please make sure you to download a copy of the registration form or confirmation. Also, remember anyone can join the ACS CAN membership at any age, be a friend, relative, neighbor, etc.

We create more birthdays by helping people stay and get well, and by fighting back against cancer ~ Fight Back Trough Advocacy!!! For more information on how to get involved with advocacy or ACS CAN, please contact Debbie Jasinski ~ (Advocacy Chair) ~ [email protected].

On Saturday, December 4th approximately 160 people gathered at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Sinking Spring and enjoyed a great breakfast and morning of fun with Santa. The children decorated cookies, made an ornament for their tree

and of course, sat on Santa’s lap and shared their Christmas wishes! The event raised $1057.00 with the Faithful Friends team selling the most seats for the

breakfast (their team raised $256.00 from breakfast ticket sales! Talk about a great way for a team to bank money toward their goal!) CONGRATS! We would also like to thank the Faithful Friends team for all of their hard work in the kitchen!

Thank you Ruthann Woll (chair – Fundraising Everyone enjoyed good food and good company committee) for all of Your hard work in planning the Breakfast with Santa! Thank you also to SANTA!
