BLANTYRE NEWS

Our last Blantyre meeting was at Sara Samnika’s house in May 2016. There Sonia talked about her daughter Megan who had just joined Servas Austria as a day host. Megan attending university in there. Sadly this was the last meeting Sonia was ever to attend as she collapsed in the last week of August at the St Andrews hostel. Sonia lived on site in a comfy flat as she was a popular school boarding parent. Her end was very unexpected and she did not make it to hospital. It’s still very hard to believe she is gone, she was so much the life and soul of any party, meeting or event – with superb social skills – talking to all those around her openly and warmly friends or not. She was well known and well liked and many Servas members attended the funeral. We hope her husband -Eddy who has taken on the full-time care of the children here in Blantyre - Mary-Crystal and Mikyla will come to social meetings, hosting when they’re ready. Our thoughts are with them.

Servas Malawi will sponsor a box and commerative stamp for hikers to find. We will hike up as a group here in Blantyre and hide it somewhere around the Chilimoni, ‘Way of the Cross’ – in memory of her. Sonia hiked up this very hill just a week and a half before she died. It’s a very peaceful place to sit in contemplation – make every effort to attend this special upcoming social!!

MEMORIAL PEACE GARDEN

* MEMORIAL CONTEMPLATION GARDEN - St Andrew’s Int’ High School*

Sonia worked as a Special Needs Assistant at St Andrew’s International High School. In memory of Sonia and a student who also tragically died, the school under the auspices of Servas Malawi member – Sara Samanika – are designing a memorial peace garden.

mn

Here are pictures of its development. Sara says, ‘It doesn’t look much yet but it will be amazing. You will see a square with the pagoda and chairs in it and a little pool. I have just spent mk280,000 on wood so next week we are building a huge pagoda and seating area on the lower section. This will create 2 distinct areas which can be used for prayer (Muslims have to pray boy and girl apart). We are making quotes to go up around the garden and it will have lots of plants in it. In the centre of the quadrant we will construct a shallow pond with Ariam lilies – particularly because this was Sonia’s favourite plant.’

NEXT MEETING: Jamaica – Is it all raggae & white beaches? Where?= At Jenny Paddy-Grey. When?=March

We started off late as Mommy was at the clock tower waiting to see if anyone would turn up needing a lift. The meeting was at my house in Nymabadwe in Blantyre and my dad gave a presentation on our recent Xmas ‘Travels in

South Africa’. 16 people came to the meeting. We gobbled hot soup and bread from a small mountain of it on the kitchen table and sat down to watch a powerPoint presentation by my dad. He told us about hiking up table mountain and how cold the water was on the Atlantic side and how sparkly the shops were there. Aunty Sara talked about her boat trip out to Robyn Island and how she liked the guides being old prisoners– William told me it was a long boat ride from the harbour in a big boat. Mommy said it was a mellow evening and fun.
