  • EXPLANATORY NOTES

    This quarterly Bulletin provides updates on basic production data of major vegetables and root crops, namely, mongo, peanut, cabbage, eggplant, tomato, garlic, onion, sweet potato and cassava. These crops are highlighted in the report on the Performance of Agriculture which the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) releases every quarter.

    This issue of the Bulletin contains the preliminary estimates of production in January-March 2015 and the final estimates of production in October-December 2014. It also presents area harvested in the second half and the whole year of 2014 which are being reported on a semi-annual basis. The source of data is the quarterly Crop Production Survey (CrPS) of the PSA.

    Mongo • Production for the first quarter of 2015 was estimated at 7.22 thousand mt. It

    was up by 1.9 percent from 7.08 thousand mt of production recorded in the same quarter of 2014 (Table 1).

    • The increase in production was attributed to:

    o increase in production areas for mongo production in Bulacan, Tarlac and Occidental Mindoro;

    o utilization of some rainfed areas not planted with palay during the second cropping season in Iloilo; and

    o favorable weather condition in ARMM Region.

    • Production this quarter represented 22.0 percent of the 5-year annual average of mongo production.

    • The top producing regions were Ilocos Region, Western Visayas and ARMM (Figure 2).

    Peanut • This quarter’s production of peanut was 11.98 thousand mt, 2.2 percent higher

    than the 11.72 thousand mt output level during the same period last year (Table 1).

    • This increase was the result of:

    o increase in production areas in Cagayan due to the introduction of new varieties and technical assistance of Cagayan Valley Research Center (CVRC);

    o increase in yield due to application of basal fertilizer in Pampanga; o sustained use of improved variety coupled with moderate rainfall in

    Palawan; and o expansion of production areas due to demand for processing of peanut-

    based delicacies in Iloilo.

    • This quarter’s production was 41.0 percent of the 5-year annual average of peanut output.

    • About sixty (60) percent or 7.15 thousand mt of the cabbage production this quarter came from Ilocos Region (Figure 6).

    Cabbage • Production of cabbage was 32.64 thousand mt or 2.5 percent higher than the

    31.86 thousand mt output in the same period of 2014 (Table 1).

    • The increase in production was attributed to the following factors:

    o favorable weather condition during head formation in Benguet; o increase in production areas in Ilocos Region and Cagayan Valley; and o lesser incidence of cabbage worms in Davao City.

    • Production for the quarter was equivalent to 24.0 percent of the 5-year annual average of cabbage output.

    • The top producing regions were CAR (78%), Central Visayas (6%) and Ilocos Region (6%) (Figure 6).

    Eggplant • Eggplant production grew by 5.5 percent from 70.84 thousand mt level in 2014

    to 74.76 thousand mt this year (Table 1).

    • The production growth was due to:

    o increase in production areas due to seed support from the Local Government Units (LGUs) in Pangasinan and Isabela; and

    o lesser incidence of leaf spot and flea beetles in Ilocos Norte and fruit borers in Quezon;

    • This quarter’s output was about 32.0 percent of the country’s 5-year annual average of eggplant production.

    • The bulk of production for this period came from Ilocos Region, CALABARZON and Central Luzon with a combined share of seventy (70) percent to the country’s production (Figure 8).

    Tomato • This quarter’s production of tomato was 89.93 thousand mt, 2.7 percent higher

    than the 2014 level of 87.54 thousand mt (Table 1).

    • The following factors led to the positive production growth:

    o good market price that encouraged farmers to increase production areas in Ilocos Sur and La Union;

    o increase in production areas in Nueva Vizcaya due to seed distribution from the Agricultural Training Institute in Cagayan and LGUs;

    o increased planting density in Nueva Ecija; and o early control of fruit borers in Pampanga, Zambales and Quezon.

    • Production during the quarter was equivalent to 40.0 percent of the 5-year

    annual average output.

    • Ilocos Region contributed forty-five (45) percent to the country’s production this quarter (Figure 10).

    Garlic

    • Production of garlic was 9.75 thousand mt, 17.0 percent higher than the 8.33

    thousand mt output in the same period of 2014 (Table 1).

    • The increase in production was attributed to:

    o shifting from other cash crop areas in Ilocos Norte and Ilocos Sur due to the distribution of good quality seeds from the Vegetable Importers, Exporters and Vendors Association (VIEVA); and

    o sunny weather condition favorable to garlic production in Southern part of Oriental Mindoro.

    • This quarter’s production was about 94.0 percent of the 5-year annual

    average garlic production.

    • Ilocos Region shared seventy-four (74) percent to the country’s production of garlic for the first quarter (Figure 12).

    Sweet Potato • Production this quarter was estimated at 117.19 thousand mt, 1.7 percent more

    than the 115.28 thousand mt record in the same quarter of 2014 (Table 1).

    • The positive growth was primarily due to the following:

    o intermittent rainfall that favored root development of the crop in Quezon; o market demand that encouraged farmers to expand production areas in

    Iloilo and Negros Oriental; o use of high yielding varieties (HYV-VISCA variety) that resulted to bigger

    roots harvested in Cebu; and o expansion of production areas in Leyte, Misamis Oriental and the Caraga

    provinces.

    • The harvest for the first quarter accounted for 23.0 percent of the 5-year annual average of sweet potato production of the country.

    • This quarter’s top producing regions were Bicol Region (20%), Eastern Visayas (13%) and Western Visayas (12%) (Figure 18).

    Red and Yellow Onion • Production of red and yellow onion during the quarter was 96.06 thousand mt or

    84.2 percent higher than last year’s output of 52.15 thousand mt (Table 1).

    • The increase in production was due to:

    o increase in production areas encouraged by good demand and better market price in Ilocos Norte, La Union and Pangasinan;

    o expansion in area harvested and better yield attributed to sunny weather in the southern part of Oriental Mindoro; and

    o early harvesting of crops in Central Luzon due to fear of possible damage that could be brought by the passage of typhoon “Chedeng” on the first week of April 2015.

    • About 18.0 percent of the 5-year annual average production were produced

    during this quarter.

    • Central Luzon shared eighty-seven (87) percent of the country’s red and yellow onion production during the quarter (Figure 14).

    • The increase in output could be attributed to:

    o increase in production areas in Ilocos Sur; and o crop shifting from tomato farm areas in Batangas.

    • This quarter’s production accounted for 64.0 percent of the country’s 5-year

    annual average output.

    o use of high yielding varieties (HYV-Rayong varieties) and newly opened areas in Cebu;

    o expansion of production areas in Leyte, Tawi-tawi and the Davao provinces; and

    o support of LGUs through organic fertilizer and seed pieces distribution in Zamboanga del Norte and Zamboanga del Sur;

    • Compared with the five-year annual average production record, about 20.0 percent was harvested in the January-March 2015 period.

    • Bulk of harvest this quarter came from Northern Mindanao (36%), ARMM (19%) and Cagayan Valley (9%) (Figure 20).
