More than simply a logo or a catchy tag line, a compelling brand can change the way people view and support your organization. When nonprofits are able to clearly articulate their message and present themselves effectively, they can increase their visibility, engage donors and raise more money.

A Message from President Leigh Hersey

We mourn the recent loss of AFP Memphis member, Holden Potter. He passed away Dec. 23 at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis following a brief illness. Holden will be remembered as a skilled communicator, energetic organizational leader, and dedicated community servant.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, January 8th at 2 p.m. at Calvary Episcopal Church followed by a reception in the Great Hall. Calvary is located downtown at the corner of Second and Adams. Parking is available across from St. Peter's Catholic Church on Adams Street as well as a lot across from the church on Second.

In addition to Calvary's clergy, Rabbi Micah Greenstein of Temple Israel and Rabbi Cantor David Julian will take part in the service.

Happy New Year! I hope your year-end giving campaigns were successful. Now, time to plan for another year of fundraising. Hopefully, AFP can be a part of your planning and professional development. Thank you to everyone who participated in our survey last fall on AFP programming. We had a great response and learned so much about your professional development wants and needs. The programming team will be using this information to help plan events this year. If you have any additional comments or suggestions, please feel free to share.

The new year also represents a transition of the AFP board. I want to thank all the members of the 2012 AFP board for their hard work and dedication. We had a wonderful year of programming and events. I also want to welcome the 2013 members of the board. I look forward to working with each of you as we continue to be a resource for fundraising professionals in the Mid-South. If you are interested in being on the board in the future, I encourage you to start now by joining one of our committees. This is a great way to learn more about AFP and its members. If you are interested in joining a committee, please let me know.

Best wishes for a prosperous 2013.

Leigh N. HerseyPresident

Dear AFP Members,

Thank you for the privilege of serving as your AFP Memphis President in 2012.

We had a very successful year, thanks to the hard work and dedication of our Board of Directors, committee members, our Chapter Administrator, Millie McPherson, and the

continued support from each of you.

Your participation at our events has strengthened our chapter, ending the year in a very positive position, both financially and professionally. Our successful annual conference, Crystal Awards with record-breaking attendance, educational luncheon programs and webinars offered rewarding resources and networking to us as fundraisers.

It was a pleasure meeting and getting to know many of you throughout the year. Thank you for all that you do for our chapter, constituents and community.

Please join with me in welcoming our new AFP Memphis President for 2013, Leigh Hersey. This year will even be better!

I look forward to seeing you at our next meeting on January 10 at CBU.

Happy New Year!Connie Gonitzke2012 AFP Memphis President

NEW AFP Membership Types

We are excited that AFP has announced three new membership types. We believe that these changes will provide greater opportunity for Memphis area professionals to join AFP, experience the many benefits of membership in AFP and save while doing so.

For more information, visit the AFP national website at www.afpnet.org and click on the top left tab, Join AFP.

Young Professional Membership

Open to individuals, 30 years old or younger, who hold some degree of responsibility directly for fundraising, are compensated for their services and are employed, or have been employed by an organization that provides benefits to society. Membership fee is $75.00 and includes chapter dues.

AFP Nonprofit Organizational Membership – Small Organizations Open to nonprofit organizations who can answer yes to all the following criteria:

1. An operating budget of less than $1,000,000, 2. A fundraising department with less than two (2) Full time equivalent (FTE) staff, 3. Individually incorporated or otherwise organized as a separate entity in the laws of the

specific country; and 4. Not affiliated with a larger institution supporting their operations.

The organization will designate one fundraising professional to receive the benefits offered in this membership category. The membership may be transferred to another individual if the original member leaves the organization. Limit one membership per organization. The $150.00 includes chapter dues.

AFP Nonprofit Organizational Membership – Large Organizations AFP’s Nonprofit Organizational Memberships will provide long-term value, promote philanthropy and charitable giving and bring public recognition of an organization’s commitment to foster ethical standards and professionalism in fundraising. To be eligible for the large organization discounted membership rates, an organization needs eight (8) or more fundraising professionals. For more information about how a large organization can qualify and experience reduced membership costs, please talk directly with Jennifer Watkins, AFP Membership Representative at [email protected] or 800-666-3863 to learn how this membership type applies directly to your organization.
