This program was developed by Letty when she realized that some students were dependent on the meals that they received at school for their primary nutrition. Her questions was “what about during the summer time and also during the Christmas break?” Letty con- tacted the Communities in Schools representatives in the Canyon Lake area and asked for student referrals. The rest is history. Letty develops a ‘shopping list’ and submits that to the San Antonio Food Bank. The advantage of buying food from the Food Bank is that all the dollars are multiplied by 10 – 12 times in pur- chasing power. Dear friends,

One of the ways I now, more gently, tell people about my name, and how I prefer to be

called, is by saying, “My friends call me David.” This leaves the relation-ship squarely in my new acquaint-ance’s court. It may sound like a silly social convention, but I believe each of you knows how important it is to have someone remember your name—and how bent out of shape we can become when people get it wrong or mix it up with someone else’s. (Linda versus Lynda, Betty versus Bette, etc.) That’s a good indi-cator of what a relationship is like. We show others what we think of

them by how we refer to them or by how familiar they allow us to be with them.

“We show others what we

think of them by how we

refer to them or by how

familiar they allow us to be

with them.” On top of the familiarity there’s the meaning. Names often reference incidents in our lives or people whom

we honor. Hebrew names mean things; they’re usually theological assertions, faith statements. The woman in the garden is called Eve (which means “living,” for she was the mother of all living humans (Gen 3.20).) The third Hebrew king is named Solomon (“peaceable”) because his destiny was to bring peace to his kingdom. Jesus’ name is one of those and means “Salvation is from the Lord.” The angel announced this in the message to

the shepherds in Lk 2.11 when he said, “to you is born this day… the Savior,” but it’s explained when we look to Matthew, “the Hebrew gos-

You are truly wonderful volunteers, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your part in making

the North Pole Village such a magi-cal place. Many thanks also to those of you who brought hardworking spouses and children to fill in any gaps that occurred; to Doggone Grooming and Diamond Dachs-hund for the friendly, loving dogs; to all the local churches and their members for the outside Nativity; to Dave Wheeler, Brenda Varne, Evangelina, Larry Read and his group, and the North Shore United Methodist Choir for the entertain-ment. And to those of you who brought students from your organi-zations - the Girl Scouts, the Opti-mist/Octagon Club, 4-H, and Rota-ry Interact - well done. You and their parents should be very proud of the work they did for the North Pole Village. It was wonderful to meet so many new people, and if you worked more than one night multi-ply my thanks, it was great to see returning faces. I wish there was room to list all your names. Please spread the word to your friends that are as fun-loving and hardworking as yourselves about what a great place it is to spend an evening mak-ing magic for the Canyon Lake Community. I have put you on my A+ list of volunteers, and you will have the first pick of day/date and place in next year’s North Pole Village. Thank you again for all your hard work and I look forward to working with you next year. Wishing you a Happy Christ-mas, and a healthy and prosperous New Year. pel,” and hear the angel tell Joseph: “He shall save His people from their sins” (Mt 1.21.) It is the great purpose of His life.

“Can you imagine knowing

Jesus, but not as Savior?

Unless we know Jesus as

Savior, we miss the

preeminent message and

mission of His life!” Can you imagine knowing Soc-rates without knowing he was a phi-losopher? Can you imagine know-ing Shakespeare, but not as a writer; DaVinci or Edison—but not as in-ventors; Michelangelo—but not as an artist? Can you imagine knowing Jesus, but not as Savior? Unless we know Jesus as Savior, we miss the preeminent message and mission of His life! God does help, save, re-deem, and deliver us from our sins. And He does that through our rela-tionship with Jesus. Above all else Jesus is Savior. At the Feast of the Holy Name, Faithfully, Fr. David

Month of November 2014

November revenues topped No-vember expenses by $6,714. Year-to-date income over expenses is $5,086. From a Stewardship stand-point, we have done exceptionally well for 2014. At this point, St. Francis has received approximately 96% of operating pledges for 2014. Other income areas (e.g., plate and regular giving collections), have al-lowed us to surpass our budgeted income for 2014 by $15,000. I sent statements out in mid-December to give each of you a heads-up on your Operating Pledge. I will send out end of year state-ments by the end of January, 2015. Please call the office if you find dis-crepancies. Please remember to write on the memo line of any check to the parish, whether you’re giving to “operations,” “debt reduction,” “memorials,” “flowers,” or any oth-er category. We have many people giving to many different categories and it really helps us when you do this. May you have a blessed and safe New Year!

As you make your holiday sweets please think about baking an extra three dozen cookies, placing them into a freezer bag and keeping them in your freezer until February, then donating them to the hospitality table for Diocesan Council. Council will be held Feb. 26-28, 2015, at the Embassy Suites in San Marcus. I am still looking for cookie coordinators to meet me in San Marcus with your church’s cookies. Thanks for your help!
