Stories from the Stacks After the passing of my grandmother in 2007, I collected her recipe box, full of stained, well- loved cards. More than a decade later, I came into the Library and used our book scanner that is located in our History & Genealogy Room. While it was purchased to scan fragile books, it has many uses, including the scanning of business cards, 3d objects and yes, recipes. In less than an hour, I completed scanning these cards and watched the scanner auto-crop each card, saving me hours. With my siblings and cousin’s help, we created several of my grandmother’s recipes, took pictures and created a cookbook to give to our parents. Now everyone in my family can enjoy these recipes and we are able to keep the memory of my grandmother alive for generations to come. BITE INTO A GOOD BOOK

On the third Wednesday of each month, Bite Into a Good Book meets in the conference room at noon. The following books have been chosen for the first three months of 2018.

January 17 – A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles In 1922, when Count Alexander Rostov is deemed an unrepentant aristocrat by a Bolshevik tribunal, he is sentenced to house arrest in the Metropol, a grand hotel across the street from the Kremlin. Rostov, who has never worked a day in his life, must now live in an attic room while some of the most tumultuous decades in Russian history are unfolding outside. Brimming with humor, a glittering cast of characters, and one beautifully rendered scene after another, this novel casts a spell as it relates the count’s endeavors to gain a deeper understanding of what it means to be a man of purpose.

February 21 – Before We Were Yours by Lisa Wingate Based on one of America’s most notorious real-life scandals–in which Georgia Tann, director of a Memphis-based adoption organization, kidnapped and sold poor children to wealthy families all over the country. March 21 – American Fire by Monica Hesse This is a nonfiction account of a five-month arson spree that left Accomack County, Virginia reeling. Washington Post reporter Monica Hesse covered the trial of Charlie Smith, who pled guilty to 67 counts of arson; but he had an accomplice--his girlfriend Tonya Bundick. Through her depiction of the dangerous shift that happened in their passionate relationship, Hesse brilliantly brings to life the once-thriving coastal community and its distressed inhabitants, who had already been decimated by a punishing economy before they were terrified by a string of fires they could not explain.

Hello & Goodbye

At the end of 2017, we said bittersweet goodbyes to three longtime staff members. Nancy Kruse had been helping us keep our collections up-to-date for over eight years. Rita Fieldbinder, after four years of checking out thousands of books, has also bid us goodbye.

!

We are also happy to welcome new staff members to our Library! Megan Freeman started in our circulation department last October and has been active in creating wonderful book displays for us. You’ll also see her perform in our Friends’ 18th Annual Murder Mystery Dinner Theater Fundraiser!

Our technical services department welcomed two new staff members, Jill and Kregg. Jill Mullen helps ensure our materials are well labeled and protected, while Kregg Argenta catalogs difficult items such as maps and unique items related to our local history.

In our computer lab, we welcomed Jill Butler, who will be there to help you with your computer questions. We are so happy to have Megan, Jill, Kregg and Jill join our Library family
