“The world is 3 days. As for yes-terday, it has vanished alongwith all that was in it. As for to-morrow, you may never see it.As for today, it is yours, so workon it.”

We learn in the Holy Qur’an,Surah Mulk 67:2, that “Allahhas created death as well aslife, so that He might put youto a test and show which ofyou is best in conduct”. Arewe passing the test here in thislife with our good deeds andactions? Are we prepared toanswer God’s questions onthe Day of Judgment regard-ing how we used our youth,our strength, our wealth, andour knowledge? Yes, pray,fast, give zakat, and make Hajj.These form the foundation forour faith, our iman, which wemust nurture, cherish andstrengthen. Always be grate-ful for Allah’s guidance, pro-tection and sustenance. Allahis the source of all our bless-ings. Remember Allah throughzhikr. Study and live the teach-ings of the Qur’an. Ask oneself, “Are my actionspleasing to Allah?” And showthe world our good mannersand characteristics. Goodmannerisms are part of iman.Good manners are not just arecommendation, but a com-mand from Allah in the Qur’an4:36. “Be nice to neighborswho are near, neighbors whoare strangers, the friend byyour side, and the traveler.”We must be kind to everyone,everywhere: on a plane, on abus, at work, at the store,while driving. Smile! Andsmile some more. The Prophet(S.A.W.) said, “The best gifta father can give to his son isgood manners.” Where do welearn good manners? In 33:21we are told, “Indeed in theMessenger of Allah are themost beautiful pattern andconduct.” Study the Prophet’slife and make an effort to be

like him,to reflecthis lovingcharacter in our every actionand interaction. Walk andspeak with humility. In 25:63of the Qur’an, we learn that“true servants of the MostGracious are they who walkgently on the earth, and who,whenever the foolish addressthem, reply with words ofpeace.” And in 17:53, “tellmy servants that they shouldspeak in a kind manner, fortruly Satan is ready to stir updiscord between people.” Al-lah knows our intentions, butthe rest of the world only seesand judges us by our actions.The best and easiest dawah wecan give is to conduct our-selves with gentleness, caring,generosity, forgiveness andlove.

avoid conflict and it’s important for meto discuss matters that bring people to-gether, not divide us. But I’m not sureit’s wise to completely ignore the con-flicts that come up in the world that di-vide us. This past November saw an-other conflict in the Middle East that be-comes the source of a sore point betweenour communities. I am certain that all ofus were troubled by these events, sad-dened by what we saw, heard or read inthe news, disheartened by the loss of life.We all share that. But I am also certainthat between our communities most likelyif we tried to have a conversation about itwe would find that while we have com-monalities that we would also find that

our primary sympathies lie with differentcommunities. And how do we reconcilethat among friends? One of the things Ilike to remind people is that despite thefact that our sympathies may diverge,there is not really anything any of us cando about the decisions made by politi-cians and leaders in other parts of theworld. I may have my primary sympa-thies, but that does not mean that I agreewith everything the leaders are doing. Andthat does not mean that I don’t have com-passion for suffering on both sides. Andwhile each of us can decide upon whomthe primary blame falls, at the same timewe can also find fault with the leaders onthe side with whom we sympathize, lead-ers upon whom we have no influence.But more important than that, I believe itis supremely important for our commu-nities here in America to remain connectedeven during the times of trouble.

and acknowledge January 1st as the “official New Year; weshould all be very cognizant of the Islamic New Year. Weshould recognize the significance of this date and rememberthe Hijra or migration from Mecca to Medina (Hijra). We shouldunderstand all the persecution and suffering that ProphetMuhamad (SAW) and his sahabas endured with patience andfortitude to upkeep and propagate the message of Islam. Theirperseverance and sacrifice allowed this deen to come to us “ona silver platter”. The Hijra was an event that took history in anew direction. Although the Islamic calendar starts from thismigration, history prior to this date is very significant in Islam.This migration had a very positive effect in spreading the mes-sage of Islam to mankind. The beginning of each New Year,translates into new beginnings for most of us. As we prepareto make resolutions for the New Year, we too can migrate fromour negative ways to more positive actions that are pleasing toAllah (SWT). The Obama Administration began implementation of the De-ferred Action for Childhood Arrivals on August 15, 2012. TheDeferred Action for Childhood Arrivals is an immigration pro-gram that allows those who came to the United States aschildren, the ability to request consideration of deferred ac-tion if they meet several key guidelines. Upon meeting theseguidelines, they are eligible for work authorization for a pe-riod of two years. A person may request consideration ofdeferred action for childhood arrivals if they: (1) were underthe age of 31 as of June 15, 2012; (2) came to the U.S. be-fore reaching their 16th birthday; (3) have continuously re-sided in the U.S. since June 15, 2007, up to the present time;(4) were physically present in the U.S. on June 15, 2012, andat the time of making their request for consideration of de-ferred action with USCIS; (5) entered without inspectionbefore June 15, 2012, or their lawful immigration status ex-pired as of June 15, 2012; (6) are currently in school, havegraduated or obtained a certificate of completion from highschool, have obtained a general education development (GED)certificate, or are an honorably discharged veteran of theCoast Guard or Armed Forces of the United States; and (7)have not been convicted of a felony, significant misdemeanor,three or more other misdemeanors, and do not otherwise posea threat to national security or public safety.

The Greek Orthodox monks living in themonastery at the foot of Mount Sinai havein their possession many precious docu-ments going back many centuries. Theirlibrary is one of the finest in the world forancient manuscripts. One of the most pre-cious documents of all is the copy of a let-

ter narrated by Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) to the monks in theyear 628. It’s contents might come as a surprise to many, sincein this precious manuscript Muslims are exhorted to protect theChristians living within their midst. The words are so beautifulthat we repeat them in full here: In 628 C.E. Prophet Muhammad(pbuh) granted a Charter of Privileges to the monks of St.Catherine Monastery in Mount Sinai. It consisted of severalclauses covering all aspects of human rights including suchtopics as the protection of Christians, freedom of worship andmovement, freedom to appoint their own judges and to ownand maintain their property, exemption from military service,and the right to protection in war.English translation of the letter:-This is a message from Muhammad Ibn Abdullah, as a cov-enant to those who adopt Christianity, near and far, we are withthem.-Verily I, the servants, the helpers, and my followers defendthem, because Christians are my citizens; and by Allah!

two main divisions: The MAINLINE CHRISTIAN DIVISION (Or-thodox, Roman Catholic, Byzantine, Anglican/Episcopalian,Moravian, Lutheran, Methodist and Presbyterian) and the FUN-DAMENTALIST CHRISTIAN DIVISION. (Baptist, Pentecostal,Evangelical and Non-Denominational) Within the Mainline Chris-tian division, ADVENT begins the Christian New Year. Many reli-gions have a separate “Religious Calendar” that facilitates theircelebration of important feasts/holy days. The Islamic Hijri NewYear begins at the first sighting of the new moon in the month ofMuharram. (Which this year fell on November 15th) Our Jewishbrothers and sisters began their New Year on September 16th, withthe celebration of Rosh Hashanah. In Mainline Christianity, AD-VENT (Which began on Sunday, 12/2/12) heralds the beginning ofthe Christian New Year. The word ADVENT is an Anglicized ver-sion of the Latin word ADVENTUS (Translates: Coming) whichcomes from the Greek word PAROUSIA, which refers to the Sec-ond Coming of Christ. Advent actually is celebrated for 4 weeks,and begins the fourth week prior to Christmas. The four weeks ofAdvent are meant to be a special time of prayer and preparation.

A man and his wife had been arguingall night, and as bedtime approachedneither was speaking to the other. Itwas not unusual for the pair to con-tinue this war of silence for two orthree days, however, on this occa-sion the man was concerned; heneeded to be awake at 4:30am the nextmorning to catch an important flight,and being a very heavy sleeper henormally relied on his wife to wakehim. Cleverly, so he thought, whilehis wife was in the bathroom, hewrote on a piece of paper: ‘Pleasewake me at 4:30am - I have an impor-tant flight to catch’. He put the noteon his wife’s pillow, then turned overand went to sleep. The man awokethe next morning and looked at theclock. It was 8:00am. Enraged thathe’d missed his flight, he was aboutto go in search of his errant wife togive her a piece of his mind, when hespotted a hand-written note on hisbedside cabinet.The note said: “IT’s4:30am - GET UP.’

The reminder that each day we arecalled to see Christ in each and everyperson we encounter. Each religion, andeven the divisions within these religions,develop annual events/feasts/holidays,which serve as instruments of teachingthat hopefully lead to learning. However,such true learning should lead us to un-derstand better the many ways our broth-ers and sisters throughout the worldstruggle to connect to God and one an-other. My first job out of school wasthe Rabbi at a college. In No-vember of that year IsraeliPrime Minister Yitzchak Rabinwas assassinated. There weretwo profound events that oc-curred personally during thattime. One was an Algerian pro-fessor who came to visit me totell me how much of a loss hebelieved it was for the worldwith his death. The second wasthat in our personal lives thebabysitter for our daughter wasan Egyptian Muslim woman.She came to babysit the nextweek and was telling us howsad she was for the loss of thatPrime Minster. Then, severalyears later, still at that college,we launched a discussiongroup among Jews and Mus-lims on campus. The leader ofthe Muslim group was a Pales-tinian American student. Thisgroup began meeting during

the period of time when therewas a great deal of violence be-tween Israel and the Palestin-ians in the West Bank. I askedhim how could he be workingtowards community conversa-tions when he had family facingviolence every day. He re-sponded that this violence wasthe reason more than ever forcommunities not directly expe-riencing that violence to form re-lations with each other. And fi-nally, in 2006 I established thefirst ever Muslim Jewish conver-sation between our communitiesin the county where I lived inLouisiana. The first meeting hadbeen scheduled for weeks andended up taking place just daysafter the summer 2006 war be-gan between Israel andHezbollah in Lebanon. The lo-cal media became particularlyinterested in our conversationsnot merely because it was the

first time ever in our county butbecause we did not cancel themeeting after the war broke out.And leaders on both sides saidthe same thing communicationis most important during thetimes of conflict to keep our com-munities talking and findingcommonalities during difficulttimes. As I write my article theconflict has subsided, and Ihope and pray for peace, tran-quility and success for all of theparties who have been involvedin the conflict. And while I haveno influence over the leaderswho make the decisions influ-encing the future of events inthat part of the world, I can keepopen the lines of communicationhere in Florida to encourage ourcommunities to retain our friend-ships and lines of communica-tions in good times as well asbad.


The mosque was completed in1954 and dedicated by formerPresident Dwight D.Eisenhower on June 28, 1957.The Washington diplomaticcommunity played a leading rolein the effort to have a mosqueconstructed. Egypt donated amagnificent bronze chandelierand sent the specialists whowrote the Qur’anic versesadorning the mosque’s wallsand ceiling. The tiles camefrom Turkey along with the ex-perts to install them. The Per-sian rugs came from Iran,which are still in the mosque ofthe Center. Support for theproject also came from theAmerican-Muslim community.The site was purchased in 1946and the cornerstone was laid onJanuary 11, 1949. The buildingwas designed by Italian archi-tect Mario Rossi and was dedi-cated on June 28, 1957 withformer President Dwight D.Eisenhower in attendance. Thecenter continues to be con-trolled by a board of governorsmade up of various ambassa-dors. Around the building arearrayed the flags of the Islamicnations of the world. Themosque has been visited bymany high profile dignitaries,including several presidents.The highest profile visit was byformer President George W.Bush on September 17, 2001,only days after the attacks ofSeptember 11. On national tele-vision, Bush quoted from theQur’an and worked to assureAmericans that the vast major-ity of Muslims are peaceful. Inaddition to the mosque, the cen-ter contains a library and class-rooms where courses on Islamand the Arabic language aretaught.

moderate, regular course,whereby you will reach yourtarget (of paradise).” - SahihAl-Bukhari. We are suppose tolive for Allaah and do everything only for the pleasure ofAllaah. Allaah doesn’t want usto withdraw from the worldlylife and quit living. It is notrecommended or Sunnah thatone devotes him/herself tostaying in the Masjid 24/7 andstops working, or lives incelibacy and does benefit fromthe permissible pleasures andbounties Allaah has providedfor human beings InshaaAllaah. It is not expected forus to pray Salaah all day,staying up all night long,fasting every day, have nothingto do with life and wear onlydirty / patched clothes etc.

We just cannotwish and pray for things to bebetter without making sincereeffort to change ourselves, andwe also have to be patient. Allah(SWT) is the best of planners, weare not. Sometimes what we wantand what we think will make ourlives happier, may not be what’sbest for us and may not happenand so we get frustrated andbegin to lose hope. However,many times we see that whateventually happens is even betterfor us than what we hoped for. Soas part of our change, let uscommit to always persevere andnot falter in our faith and belief inAllah (SWT). While we may betempted to question His help, Hewill never give up on us to makeour life positive and blessed. Soremember just one positivechange we make could have adomino effect in our life.Obviously, the changes we makeshould have a direct effect onincreasing our Eeman and onchanging one or more negativecharacteristic to a positive one.Our New Year’s resolution shouldmake us a new and better person,we should attempt to filter outnegative aspects in our lives andto promote positives ones.Sometimes resolutions andtransitions last for just a month orso and the energy to change fizzlesout; however, our promise to be abetter believer should never falter,because the blessings we will

accumulate will help us not justin this life, but in the Hereafter(insha Allah). Allah (SWT)says: “I am as my servantthinks I am, and I am with himwhen he remembers Me. If heremembers Me to himself, Iremember him to Myself; andif he remembers Me in agathering, I remember him in agathering better than it. If hedraws near to Me a hand’sspan, I draw near to him anarm’s length, if he draws nearto me an arm’s length, I drawnear to him a fathom’s lengthand if he comes to me walking,I go to him running”. Allah(SWT) is always there for us,we need to show our gratitudeto Him and hasten to Him andalways be grateful andthankful to Him for all that Hehas blessed us with. MayAllah (SWT) guide us to doactions that are pleasing toHim and to live a life whichbrings us closer to Him andHis mercy (ameen).
