HOW TO BOOK YOUR TICKETS
Does browsing a restaurant wine list fill you with dread? Or do you feel stuck in a rut, buying the same old wine? Perhaps you’re just eager to take your next step in wine understanding and appreciation – either way, this is the tasting for you!
This relaxed, informal walkaround guide to wine tasting will give you all the tools you need to take on the world of wine – as well as being an excuse to enjoy plenty of exciting tipples.

As well as these education stations, there will be a chance to taste 25 hand-selected wines – 20 worldwide favourites to give you a flavour of ‘the classics’ and five up-and-coming wines to get you ahead of the curve – so by the end of the evening, you’ll know Châteauneuf-du-Pape as well as a best-kept British wine secret.

What better way to kick-start 2019 than to drink the wines that made 2018 brilliant and celebrate the highlights of the year?
2018 has been a joyful year for us! We won awards (including Wine Club of the Year at the International Wine Challenge, and Specialist Merchant awards for Portugal and regional France), our wines scooped medals galore at the Decanter Awards, and a record-breaking number of bottles earned the praise of the country’s leading wine writers in the press.
This is your chance to taste a delightfully diverse range of award-winning, acclaimed or just plain awesome wines that stood out in 2018. The 20+ wines will cover various styles, regions and price points – come along and see if your tastes match top wine journalists and judges, find new wine styles to enjoy and compare and contrast some of the leading bottles of the year.
You can also try your hand at writing a tasting note or two – and our favourite one will win a bottle of wine. A great way to start the year!

From north to south, the Rhône Valley’s wines are famously wonderful and packed with popular names and lesser-known treats just waiting to be discovered.
Join us for an informal walkaround tasting where we’ll have up to 40 Rhône wines on show, each a great example of what makes this French region so special. Even better, we’ll be joined by the people that know the wines better than anyone else – growers, winemakers and representatives from top Rhône estates.
Everyone is welcome, whether you’re brand new to Rhône wines or know your Châteauneuf-du-Pape from your Cornas, and this evening will also be a chance to sample bottles from the excellent 2015 and 2016 vintages. We hope you can join us!

There are so many reasons to love the wines of Spain and Portugal. Alongside classic names like Rioja you’ll find on-trend wines like spritzy Vinho Verde and seafood-friendly albariño, plus complete unknowns from local grapes offering unbelievable value for money.
This is your chance to taste a wide range of wines from Spain and Portugal under one roof. There will be over 20 excellent examples from all the major regions – including Ribera del Duero and Navarra in Spain and Portugal’s Douro and Alentejo – and reds and whites to suit every budget and occasion.
We welcome all levels of wine knowledge and experience, with helpful notes provided to guide you through the wines, and there’ll be a blind-tasting game to enjoy too.
We were delighted to win the International Wine Challenge’s Specialist Merchant for Portugal Award for the second year in a row in 2018, and were shortlisted for Spain, so we hope this event will showcase what these wines have to offer.

WINE CONFIDENCE COURSE
GENERATION WINE
9GENERATION WINE UNIQUE AND EXCITING EVENTS WITH A TWIST
It’s one of the most talked about topics among wine fans – but what exactly is a natural wine? In an increasingly health-conscious society will we all be reaching for more low-intervention bottles, or does the natural wine movement simply provide an excuse for faddy but lower-quality winemaking?
In this brand new event, the team will discuss the pros and cons of the term ‘natural’, explain the difference between organic and biodynamic wines and taste through a range of examples of wines that meet various definitions of ‘natural’, plus there’ll be some tasty snacks for you to enjoy alongside the wines.
Whether you’re a natural nut or new to the idea, we’d love to see you at this relaxed tasting hosted by Tastings and Events Co-ordinator Anna Spooner.

10 GENERATION WINE UNIQUE AND EXCITING EVENTS WITH A TWIST
Sager & Wilde is already a hotspot dining destination for wine lovers, but we want to shake things up a bit in typical Generation Wine style.
At this relaxed and unpretentious evening out, Sager & Wilde will be serving a series of family-style sharing platters while we serve the wine, but there’s a catch: the wines will be served blind!
The goal isn’t to identify the wines – it’s to trust your senses, challenge your preconceptions about which wines go with which food and see if you discover some surprising new wine-and-food pairings you’d never have tried otherwise.
We’re hoping this will be an eye-opening blind-tasting experience – grab some friends and join us for a fun and memorable night out.

WINE DINNERS & SPECIAL EVENTS FINE FOOD AND FINE WINE
Kevin Judd can only be described as New Zealand wine royalty. He was the first winemaker at the iconic Cloudy Bay, working his magic there for 25 vintages, and pioneering the style of Marlborough sauvignon blanc that put this region on the global winemaking map.
In 2009, he founded Greywacke, named after the sandstone bedrock found throughout the Marlborough region, where he has taken his signature style to new heights and created a range of seven exquisite wines which are enjoyed by an enthusiastic fanbase around the world.
To celebrate Greywacke’s 10th birthday, Kevin will be hosting a memorable evening at London’s The Providores restaurant, where we’ll be enjoying a four-course meal of innovative fusion cuisine while we taste wines from Greywacke’s beginnings right through to the current vintages.
Wines to be tasted include current and past vintages of Greywacke Sauvignon Blanc, Wild Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling and Pinot Noir – if you love New Zealand wines, you won’t want to miss this.

In the world of wine, does older always mean better? Is good wine about experience or experimentation?
In this brand new wine dinner, we pit old favourites against their modern challengers, exploring what happens when an innovative winemaker gets their hands on classic grape varieties, or goes against the regulations and brings new varieties to historic terroirs.
Join us as the Tastings team introduce contrasting wines on an ‘old vs. new’ theme while you enjoy a sumptuous four-course dinner in one of the UK’s most beautiful and historic colleges. Expect to have your preconceptions challenged and your tastebuds tantalised!

EXPLORE PINOT NOIR: WORKSHOP
14 THE SOCIETY IN STEVENAGE TASTE WINE AND FOOD AT THE WINE SOCIETY’S HEADQUARTERS
Is pinot noir the world’s best-loved grape variety? Quite possibly. It certainly sailed to a comfortable victory in our #worldcupofgrapes on Twitter in June 2018! For many, nothing compares with the pinot noirs of France’s Burgundy region, but with prices continuing to rise many have started searching for alternative sources.
At this informative workshop we’ll be tasting pinots from all over the world, including New Zealand, Australia, Chile, Germany and France. We’ll enjoy 11 examples in total at various price points: three under £15, three between £15 and £24 and three between £24 and £40, finishing with two benchmark premier cru Burgundies.
This is your chance to taste pinot noir from across a huge spectrum of styles and possibilities – and we’ll serve some light food matches to accompany the wines as you taste along. Whether you’re pinot mad or yet to be converted, we hope you’ll join us for a fun afternoon of wine exploration.

We’re taking part in the great Scottish tradition, celebrating the poet Robert Burns and the ‘great chieftain o the puddin’-race’ (that’s haggis to you and us!), and we warmly invite you to join in.
Of course, we’ll start proceedings with a bagpiper greeting guests as you arrive and settle in with a pre-dinner drink, and then we’ll sit down to a classic three-course Scottish Burns supper. Our Tastings and Events team has taken on the task of choosing wines to pair each course, including the notoriously difficult wine match for haggis, which will of course be served with a recitation of Burn’s famous Address to a Haggis. After dinner, we’ll sit back with a wee dram, a fitting end to a quintessential Scottish celebration.

LUNCH AT THE SOCIETY
16 THE SOCIETY IN STEVENAGE TASTE WINE AND FOOD AT THE WINE SOCIETY’S HEADQUARTERS
This afternoon starts with a chance to enjoy a walking tour of the cellars and learn about the 145-year history of The Society. This includes visiting our eco-friendly fourth warehouse, which alone holds more than two million bottles of wine.
Back in The Showroom a cool glass of fizz awaits you, after which we will head to the Members’ Room for a four-course lunch freshly prepared with seasonal ingredients. The lunch will be accompanied by a tasting of five wines, all specifically chosen to complement the menu. Throughout the lunch a member of our Tastings team will provide an insight into the wines and explain the food and wine pairings.
In a nutshell, more than your average lunch, and a great way to get to know your Society better.

Guest of honour at our fifth ‘Meet the Buyer’ lunch is Sebastian Payne MW, our former Chief Wine Buyer (now known as Head of Buying) for 27 years, who has been a key figure at The Society for over four decades.
He’s currently our buyer for Italy (and has been for well over 30 years) but he also expertly oversaw our Bordeaux wines for many years, and has also bought wines for pretty much every region we sell at one point or another!
At this enjoyable lunch, Sebastian will tell us about some of his favourite moments from 45 years in the wine industry, and he’ll be choosing some special bottles to accompany our meal and telling us exactly why he loves them. Join us for a friendly and enlightening lunch.
Our ever-popular Italian wine dinner is back!
Italy is a little slice of heaven for all those who love good food and wine, so we decided to bring a little of ‘la dolce vita’ to Stevenage with an Italian-themed four-course dinner complemented with wines from across the country which showcase some of the best that Italy has to offer.
With the likes of Barolo, Soave, Prosecco and Chianti to choose from, we really are spoilt for choice, so come along and find out which Italian wine treats we’ll be enjoying with our feast. We hope you can join us – buon appetito!

It’s time to indulge your sweet tooth – our yearly pudding club is back and we’re ready to explore the luscious world of dessert wines once again.
In the company of the Tastings team’s self-confessed pudding addict Emma Briffett, we’ll try eight delicious, honeyed sweet wines, from the sumptuous apricot sweetness of Sauternes to the grapey richness of muscat.
Naturally, we couldn’t serve such lovely sweet wines without a selection of tempting puddings to match! We’ll be dishing up a range of desserts designed to complement the wines and aid us in our exploration of the often complex (but ultimately very enjoyable) world of food and sweet wine matching.
This is the perfect workshop for all those of us who find it hard to see past the dessert trolley – and would like a wine to match!
It’s obvious why tapas has stolen the hearts of the nation: the small-but-perfectly-formed plates of Spanish delicacies, from spicy chorizo to fresh seafood, indulgent croquetas and comforting slices of tortilla, are the perfect recipe for a casual, social evening with good company.
So join us for a relaxed evening of simple pleasures: tasty tapas and lip-smacking Spanish wine matches! We’ll be serving a range of traditional and modern tapas dishes alongside matching wines from both classic and lesser-known wine regions in Spain including Jerez, Rioja, Navarra and La Mancha. We can’t wait to see you there.
