325 families in our parish have now given $77,000 to the Catholic Sharing Appeal,

which funds many important ministries in our Diocese of Laredo. We are now a little over 72% of the way to our goal! If every family made some contribution, we can

reach our goal. If you have not yet made your pledge, please do so today. Forms are

FROM THE PAROCHIAL VICAR, FR. PEDRO MERCADO JR.

Come, Let Us Adore Him! I did not come to know what the Epiphany, the Nativity, or the Three Kings meant until I was an adult. As a child I prayed the rosary with my grandmother on Christmas Eve for the Baby Jesus. I recall we would kiss the Baby Jesus and receive a candy. Only when I entered seminary did I come to know what their names were: Melchior, Cas-par, and Balthazar (they represent Europe, Arabia, and Afr ica). I also learned that in some Hispanic countries it is the Three Kings who bring gifts to the children. The visit of the Three Kings is known as “the Epiphany,” which is celebrated on January 6th, and the Three Kings are also known as “The Wise Men” or “The Magi.” In Matthew 2:10-12 we read “And behold, the star that they had seen at its rising preceded them, until it came and stopped over the place where the child was. They were overjoyed at seeing the star, and on entering the house they saw the child with Mary his mother. They prostrated themselves and did him homage. Then they opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed for their country by another way.”

The gifts they bring (gold, frankincense, and myrrh) signify, “[t]he gold ... a symbolic acknowledgment of Jesus’ royal standing as “King of the Jews,” while the frankincense manifests the divine nature of the baby’s existence, since he is not an earthly king but the Son of God. And finally the myrrh, often used to embalm corpses, was gifted to the newborn as a symbol of Jesus’ mortality — foreshadowing his death as a means to cleanse humanity of its sins” (Carolina Moreno, Three Kings’ Day Celebration: History And Traditions Behind ‘El Día De Los Reyes’ Latino Voices, (2015), https://www.huffpost.com/entry/three-kings-day-celebration-history-and-traditions-behind-el-dia-de-los-reyes_n_2412379, 1). These gifts also remind us of our baptismal characteristic: priest (frankincense), prophet (myrrh), and king (gold). Additionally, Shari Abbott states, “The treasures the wise men brought were of significant value and prophetic importance. Gold, frankincense, and myrrh are gifts worthy of a king. Gold is symbolic of Christ’s deity as King, frankincense represents His purity as Priest of God, and myrrh is suggestive of His anointed work as a Prophet and of His death” (What is the Significance of the Wise Men’s Gifts? And, Were These Men Kings? Reasons for Hope, 2017, https://reasonsforhopejesus.com/significance-of-the-three-kings-gifts/ ).

We live and act out our common priesthood when we offer Mass intentions, when we pray for others, when we offer intercessions such as in the Mass in the Prayers of the Faithful, and so much more. We live and act out our baptismal characteristic as prophet through being anointed in baptism and

prepare the way for the Lord by inspiring others to come closer to Christ and be baptized in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. We live out our kingship baptismal characteristic by preparing our way to holiness and living out the Word of God and receiving graces through the Sacraments to reach our goal: heaven.

Let us continue to prepare the way of the Lord by living out our baptismal characteristics, so when He returns we will meet Him in a state of grace. Then we can best say, “Come, let us adore Him!”

DEL VICARIO PARROQUIAL, P. PEDRO MERCADO, JR.

La Sagrada Familia

Ven, vamos a adorarlo! Kings? Reasons for Hope, 2017, https://reasonsforhopejesus.com/significance-of-the-three-kings-gifts/).

Entonces podemos decir mejor: "¡Ven, adoremos a Él!"

Father of goodness and love, hear our prayers for the sick members of

our community and for all who are in need. Amid mental and physical

suffering may they find consolation in your healing presence. Show your

mercy as you close wounds, cure illnesses, make broken bodies whole and

free downcast spirits. May these special people find lasting health and

deliverance, and so join us in thanking you for all your gifts. We ask this

through Lord Jesus who healed those who believed. Amen
