Historical background of the Santo Niño devotion and the Sinulog

The story of Santo Niño dates back to the discovery of the Philippines by Ferdinand Magellan in 1521, and the Christianization of the islands. The statue of the Holy Child Jesus, believed to have come from Belgium, was given to Humamay, later christened as Queen Juana, wife of the native leader, Rajah Humabon. There was natural resistance to the Spanish conquistadores by the natives of the islands, and from the remains of battle after battle between them, the image of the Santo Nino was discovered in a box. The box contained the unscathed image of the Child Jesus, which up to the present day is visited and honored in the Basilica Del Santo Niño in Cebu City, Philippines.

Every January, the Philippine nation celebrates and honors the Holy Child Jesus with processions, fluvial parades, dancing and prayers. At St. Justin’s we honor this tradition along with Filipino people around the world, by paying homage to the miracles that they have received from the Señor Santo Niño. We will see the ladies or “damas” of Queen Juana, dancing to the drumbeat of the Sinulog music. The Sinulog dance honors the San-to Niño and petitions are uttered after each step of the dance. The dancers accompany the Queen’s court as the Queen invokes the Santo Niño to listen to her prayers and continue to grant her petitions and those of her people. Following Queen Juana are children with flowers, and candy offerings. Filipinos believe that as a child, Jesus enjoys the presence and the company of little children.

LIGHT OF THE WORLD Epiphany can be understood as an

extension of the Nativity of the Lord that we celebrate on December 25. While at Christmas we celebrate Jesus’ coming as the long-awaited king and Messiah of the Jewish people, on Epiphany we celebrate the revelation that Jesus is the Savior and Light of all nations—Jews, Gentiles, and all people.

The star shines so brightly that it at-tracts magi who come from far distant countries to worship Jesus. They are not Jews, yet they are drawn to the Light of the world. The letter to the Ephesians re-veals that the Light of the world was for the Gentiles as well as the Jews—Christ gathers all people into the light of his love. The reading from Isaiah also de-scribes a gathering of diverse peoples, but this time it is to the light that emanates from the people of God. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

SAINT ELIZABETH ANN SETON (1774-1821) January 4

Though her liturgical designation is “Religious,” Elizabeth Seton, her feast-day prayer reminds us, was also wife, mother, educator, foundress. Born into a wealthy Episcopalian family, Elizabeth married William Seton, whose untimely death in Italy where the young family sought healing for William’s tuberculosis, left her, at twenty-nine, a widow with five children. Inspired by the faith and charity of the Italian family with whom they stayed, Elizabeth embraced Catholicism despite her family’s disowning her and ceasing finan-cial support. This woman of many firsts (and several vocations!) opened the first free Catholic school, beginning the American Catholic educational sys-tem, and founded the first American religious community for women, the Sis-ters of Charity. The tuberculosis that claimed her husband took also her oldest and youngest daughters and, finally, at just forty-seven, Elizabeth herself. Another first: in 1975 she was canonized the first native-born American saint. Once asked to summarize her spirituality, she replied: “Faith lifts the stagger-ing soul on one side, hope supports it on the other, experience says it must be, and love says let it be!” —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Before long, people will be throwing Mardi Gras beads in the streets of

New Orleans—purple, gold, and green. A few will be in on the secret: the colors of the beads are derived from the gifts of the magi. Gold for wealth, purple for power, green for good health. The gifts are also a key to the identity of the Christ Child: the incense for God; the gold for a king; the myrrh, fra-grant burial ointment for one who comes to die.

Centuries ago, today’s feast bore the heavy burden of celebrating all the manifestations of Christ’s identity: the birth of Jesus, the coming of the magi, the baptism of the Lord, the wedding feast at Cana. It was too much for one day. Fortunately the one day has blossomed into a whole season of grateful celebration, stretching behind us into Advent, and ahead of us into the Bap-tism of the Lord and to Christ’s coming again in glory. Recently and over the last few years we have had some of our parishioners contacted through email, phone calls, and text messages, from dishonest people who claim to be representing the priests of our parish. These people have claimed that they are contacting you for one of our priests, and have asked for money or gift cards to help someone in need. THESE ARE SCAMS! Our priests do not solicit funds for personal rea-sons, especially by email or text messages. These scams are not only affecting our parish, they have been affecting many in our diocese. Most are getting the priests’ names from our web-sites. They use a priest’s name to try to get you to give them money or gift cards. Do not fall for this. If you are contacted by one of these scammers, please notify the office.

Save your recyclables for us

Parishioners Craig and Rene Chambers are handling our parish recycling program. We ask that you save aluminum cans, glass bottles, and plastic containers and give them to the church. The Chambers’ will drive them to the recycling center, and give the money received to our parish’s St. Vincent de Paul program. Please bring your recyclables to the SVDP room (at the end of the shelter) on the second and fourth Sat-urdays of the month from 8-10 a.m. If you are unable to bring your recyclables to the church, the Chambers’ will go to your home and pick them up. SANTA ELIZABETH SETON (1774-1821) 4 de enero Elizabeth nació en una familia anglicana donde aprendió a amar a Dios y a la Sa-

grada Escritura. Contrajo matrimonio a los 19 años con William Seton y ambos engen-draron cinco hijos. Debido a la economía y la salud de su marido, emigró a Italia y pos-teriormente sufrió la muerte de su esposo. Gracias al testimonio y ayuda de una familia católica, expresó su deseo de hacerse católica y, finalmente, en 1805 profesó la plena comunión con la Iglesia. Como hija de catedrático llegó a ser una mujer de amplísima educación e ingenio y fundó una escuela para educar a los niños y mantener a su famil-ia. Unos años después, junto con otras tres compañeras fundaron otra escuela en Balti-more, naciendo así la primera comunidad religiosa de mujeres fundada en los Estados Unidos: Hermanas de la Caridad de San José. Gracias a su visión y al carisma de sus hermanas, crearon las escuelas parroquiales en los Estados Unidos, influenciando el crecimiento del catolicismo y por supuesto, la educación católica. Recientemente y en el transcurso de los últimos años hemos tenido algunos de nuestros feligreses contactados por medio de un correo electrónico, llamadas, y mensajes de texto, por personas deshonestas que se dicen ser representantes de los sacerdotes de nuestra parro-quia. Estas personas dicen que los están contactando de parte de uno de nuestros sacerdotes, y están pidiendo dinero o tarjetas de regalo para ayudar a alguna persona necesitada. ¡ESTO ES UNA ESTAFA! Nuestros sacerdotes no solicitan fondos por razones personales, especialmente por correo electrónico o mensajes de texto. Estas estafas no solo han afectado a nuestra parroquia, sino que han afecta-do a muchos en nuestra diócesis. La mayoría obtiene el nombre del sacerdote por nuestra página de internet. Utilizan el nombre del sacer-dote para tratar de obtener su dinero o tarjetas de regalo. No caigan en esta trampa. Si son contactados por estos estafadores, por favor de contactar la oficina.

todas las lecturas de cada domingo, reflexiones y datos de importantes para ayudarles a entender mejor las lecturas al igual que guiarse durante la misa. El Misal esta disponible en la oficina a $5.

ADVENTENCIA IMPORTANTE

El primer lunes de cada mes, aquellas personas de edad avanzada, con una enfermedad seria, salud en decadencia, o si van a tener una ci-rugía están invitados a asistir a la misa de las 7 p.m. en la Misión Sagra-do Corazón. Durante la misa podrán recibir el Sacramento de la Un-ción de los Enfermos. Este mes la Unción será el 6 de enero.

REFLEXIONES SOBRE LA PALABRA Los magos de oriente buscaban a Dios

Todos los hombres estamos llamados a formar un solo cuerpo con Cristo y vivir juntos cerca de Dios. En esto consiste, según san Pablo (SEGUNDA LECTURA), el misterio oculto desde siempre. Solo algunos profetas, como Isaías (PRIMERA LECTURA), alcanzaron a presentarlo. Luego pasaron los siglos. Y he aquí que el nacimiento de Cristo transfor-ma la esperanza en realidad. Con la llegada de los magos a Belen, el mis-terio comienza a revelarse: los pueblos paganos se ponen en camino hacia Cristo (EVANGELIO).

Isaías 60, 1-6 Levántate y resplandece, Jerusalén, porque ha llegado tu luz y la glo-

ria del Señor alborea sobre ti. Mira: las tinieblas cubren la tierra y espesa niebla envuelve a los pueblos; pero sobre ti resplandece el Señor y en ti se manifiesta su gloria. Caminarán los pueblos a tu luz y los reyes, al re-splandor de tu aurora.

Levanta los ojos y mira alrededor: todos se reúnen y vienen a ti; tus hijos llegan de lejos, a tus hijas las traen en brazos. Entonces verás esto radiante de alegría; tu corazón se alegrará, y se ensanchará, cuando se vuelquen sobre ti los tesoros del mar y te traigan las riquezas de los pueb-los. Te inundará una multitud de camellos y dromedarios, procedentes de Madián y de Efá. Vendrán todos los de Sabá trayendo incienso y oro y proclamando las alabanzas del Señor.

De la carta del apóstol San Pablo a los Efesios 3, 2-3a. 5-6 Hermanos: Han oído hablar de la distribución de la gracia de Dios, que se me ha confiado en favor de ustedes. Por revelación se me dio a conocer este misterio, que no había sido manifestado a los hombres en otros tiem-pos, pero que ha sido revelado ahora por el Espíritu a sus santos apóstoles y profetas: es decir, que por el Evangelio, también los paganos son cohere-deros de la misma herencia, miembros del mismo cuerpo y partícipes de la misma promesa en Jesucristo.

Evangelio Lectura del santo evangelio según san Mateo 2, 1-12

Jesús nació en Belén de Judá, en tiempos del rey Herodes. Unos ma-gos de oriente llegaron entonces a Jerusalén y preguntaron: “¿Dónde está el rey de los judíos que acaba de nacer? Porque vimos surgir su estrella y hemos venido a adorarlo”.

Al enterarse de esto, el rey Herodes se sobresaltó y toda Jerusalén con él. Convocó entonces a los sumos sacerdotes y a los escribas del pueblo y les preguntó dónde tenía que nacer el Mesías. Ellos le contestaron: “En Belén de Judá, porque así lo ha escrito el profeta: Y tú, Belén, tierra de Judá, no eres en manera alguna la menor entre las ciudades ilustres de Judá, pues de ti saldrá un jefe, que será el pastor de mi pueblo, Israel”.

Entonces Herodes llamó en secreto a los magos, para que le precisa-ran el tiempo en que se les había aparecido la estrella y los mandó a Belén, diciéndoles: “Vayan a averiguar cuidadosamente qué hay de ese niño y, cuando lo encuentren, avísenme para que yo también vaya a adorarlo”.

Después de oír al rey, los magos se pusieron en camino, y de pronto la estrella que habían visto surgir, comenzó a guiarlos, hasta que se detuvo encima de donde estaba el niño. Al ver de nuevo la estrella, se llenaron de inmensa alegría. Entraron en la casa y vieron al niño con María, su madre, y postrándose, lo adoraron. Después, abriendo sus cofres, le ofrecieron regalos: oro, incienso y mirra. Advertidos durante el sueño de que no vol-vieran a Herodes, regresaron a su tierra por otro camino. Palabra del Se-ñor. R. Gloria a ti, Señor Jesús.

Desde lejanas tierras, ellos fueron guiados por una estrella que les marco el camino. En su providencia, Dios mismo los condujo de una manera misteriosa al encuentro con el Mesías recién naci-do. *Antes de salir de sus respectivos lugares, los magos tuvieron que hacer muchos preparativos, para hacer un viaje que pasaría por lugares inhóspitos y peligrosos. Se arriesgaron para buscar algo en verdad grandioso. *Cuando al fin llegaron a Jerusalén, preguntaron acerca del Rey de los judíos que acababan de nacer, y dijeron el motivo: “Porque vimos surgir su estrella y hemos venido a adorarlo”. *Al encontrar a Jesús, reconocieron que el era Dios, ya que, “postrándose, lo adoraron” y entre lo que le dieron estaba el in-cienso. Como aquellos magos, arriesguémonos a encontrar al Niño Dios.

Pequeñas reflexiones

Influencia Católica Continúa Cristo fue empático (Mc 8, 2), sentía honda y profundamente

el sufrimiento de las personas. Se conmovía y hacía algo. Él no era indiferente pero no solo con el que le venía a pedir ayuda y conse-jo, sino con todos los que lo conocían y estaban a su alrededor.

Cristo fue un experto en resolver conflictos. Experto en diálogo y un experto en comunicación asertiva. Cristo siempre hizo preguntas ante sus dudas para buscar comprender a otros (Lc 17, 7-9). Muchas veces les preguntó ¿qué es lo que están pensan-do? Al hacer preguntas, Él enfatizó su actitud abierta hacia su interlocutor y siempre buscó resolver los conflictos mediante el diálogo.

Cristo nunca se condicionó por otros (Mc 10, 35), esos otros que le decían “queremos que nos hagas el favor que vamos a pedirte”. Cristo les decía que no cuando era necesario. Cristo les ponía un límite y les hablaba con verdad cuando se equivocaban gravemente.

Cristo fue flexible cuando veía fe en los otros, arrepentimien-to sincero, reconocimiento de sus faltas, deseo de ser mejor y am-ar. Él se acercaba a los demás con una mente abierta. No usaba su poder para sentirse seguro afectivamente ante otros. No usaba su misión para sentirse con valor (Mc 10, 46). El verdadero líder no dice “¡Adelante!” sino “¡Síganme! “El líder sabe que no siempre puede cosechar los frutos, pero no le importa ser un pedestal para que otros lo alcancen, aunque no quede como el protagonista visible de la historia. Hay hombres que hacen historia y otros que son arrastrados por ella. Hay unos que luchan contra corriente y otros que se dejan llevar por ella. Un verdadero infl uencer católico, no es aquel que obtiene muchos likes en sus publicaciones, sino aquel que influye positivamente en la vida de otros, los inspira y los transforma siendo quien está llamado a ser y acercándolos al amor de Dios.

Evangelio — Magos del oriente llegaron, diciendo: “¿Dónde está el rey de los judíos que ha nacido?” (Mateo 2:1-12).

LUZ DEL MUNDO Se puede entender la Epifanía como una extensión de la Na-

tividad del Señor que celebramos el 25 de diciembre. En la Navi-dad celebramos la venida de Jesús como el rey y Mesías tan espe-rado por el pueblo judío, y en la Epifanía celebramos la revelación de Jesús como el Salvador y la Luz de las naciones; es decir, de judíos, gentiles y de todos los pueblos.

La estrella brilla con tanto fulgor que atrae a los magos que vienen de países distantes para adorar a Jesús. No son judíos, y sin embargo se ven atraídos al que es la Luz del Mundo. La carta a los efesios revela que la Luz del Mundo era tanto para gentiles como para judíos, pues Cristo reúne a todos los pueblos en la luz de su amor. La lectura de Isaías también describe a diversos pueblos que vienen, pero esta vez les atrae la luz que emana del pueblo de Dios. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
