“We saw his star at its rising and we have come to do him homage.” This was how the magi explained their motivation for their trip. They knew by the prophesy, that the ruler of the world was to be born in Bethlehem. Contrary to Herod, these wise men did not oppose the presence of this ruler, but they rejoiced because of his presence, and came to embrace his message!

Most of the time, Catholics are pictured as negative people who do not embrace the culture as it changes with time. The arguments are countless, and at times, we feel that those arguments are true. However, I want to say that at core, we are not negative or close minded. I believe that this point of view is only one side of the conversation. While it is true that we do not just embrace anything that is put in front of us, we do not lead with a big no on our foreheads. Rather, we lead with a bigger yes in our hearts. A yes to our faith! A yes to the ruler of the world! And this is not an easy way of life. It is here that we find the biggest challenges.

“Today more than in the past,” Pope Francis observes, “the Gospel of mercy troubles our consciences, prevents us from taking the suffering of others for granted, and points out a way of responding” with practical works of spiritual and corporal mercy.

We have great opportunity now, through this reflection, to take some time to meditate on the voice of our Archbishop Blase Cupich, who encourages us to celebrate the National Migration Week, January 3-10, 2016. We have the mission to ease the struggles of the immigrants and to welcome the stranger. I am proud to say that St. Joseph parish has done that for a long time now, since we are a very diverse community. Please visit www.catholicsandimmigrants.org to learn more.

Family of St. Joseph, it’s easier to stay on the sidelines and be an antagonist. But we don’t do that. We have a positive approach; we have embraced the biggest truth of all truths, and we have decided to open our hearts and minds to it, because we too have seen its star!

La mayor parte de tiempo, los católicos somos presentados como gente negativa que no acepta la cultura que cambia con el tiempo. Los argumentos son innumerables, y muchas veces, sentimos que esos argumentos son verdad. Sin embargo, quiero decir que, en realidad, no somos negativos ni cerrados de mente. Creo que este punto de vista es solo un lado de la conversación. Mientras que es verdad que no aceptamos cualquier cosa que se nos presenta, no vamos liderando con un gran No en nuestra frente. Más bien, lideramos con un Si más grande en nuestro corazón. ¡Un Sí a nuestra fe! Un Si al rey del mundo. Este no es un estilo de vida fácil. ¡Aquí es donde encontramos los retos más grandes!

“Más que en tiempos pasados, hoy” observa el Papa Francisco, “El evangelio de la misericordia apela a nuestras conciencias, impide que se habitúen al sufrimiento del otro, e indica caminos de respuesta” con obras prácticas de misericordia espirituales y corporales.

Tenemos una gran oportunidad ahora, con esta reflexión para tomar un tiempo y meditar en las palabras de nuestro Arzobispo Blase Cupich, quien nos motiva a celebrar la Semana Nacional de la Migración, enero 3-10, 2016. Tenemos la misión de aliviar las dificultades de los inmigrantes y dar la bienvenida al extranjero. CARMEL CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL ENTRANCE EXAM

The Entrance Exam for the Class of 2020 will take place on Saturday, January 9, 2016 at 8 a.m. The fee is $25.00 (checks payable to Carmel Catholic High School). In addition to the fee, eighth graders should also bring several #2 pencils. It is not necessary to pre-register for the test. Free bus transportation is available from area parishes and schools. Families are encouraged to visit our website, www.carmelhs.org for additional information regarding the Entrance Exam, including the bus schedule.

If there are special circumstances which prevent a student from taking the Entrance Exam on January 9th or if you have additional questions, please contact our Director of Admissions, Mr. Brian Stith, at 847-388-3320 or by email Bstith@carmelhs.org.
