Prelude Chiming of the Hour Welcome

Introit (hymn 827, verse 1) O Morning Star, how fair and bright! You shine with God’s own truth and light, Aglow with grace and mercy! Of Jacob’s line, King David’s son, our Lord and Savior, You have won our hearts to serve you only! Lowly, holy! Great and glorious, All victorious, rich in blessing! Rule and might o’er all possessing!

*Call to Worship Arise, shine! Our light has come,

And the glory of our God has risen upon us. All nations shall come to this light, And rulers to the brightness of its dawning. Now the glory of the Lord has risen. Arise, shine! Our light has come!

*Hymn 152 What Star Is This, with Beams So Bright

*Call to Confession

*Prayer of Confession God our Savior, we confess that we are not people of peace. You shine upon us with your glory, yet we hide our faces from the light. You speak to us a holy mystery, yet we do not listen to your word. Forgive us, God of grace. Give us, the least of all the saints, the wisdom to know and proclaim the gospel of your saving love; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

(time for silent confession) And let God’s people say: Amen.

*Assurance of Pardon

*The Peace of Christ Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us forgive one another. The peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. And also with you. Let us share the peace of Christ with one another.

Psalm 72 Hopson

Refrain All hail to God’s anointed, Great David’s greater Son! All hail, in time appointed, your reign on earth begun! You come to break oppression, to set the captive free, To take away transgression and rule from sea to sea.

Refrain You shall come down like showers upon the fruitful earth, And love, joy, hope, like flowers, spring in your path to birth: Before you on the mountains shall peace, the herald, go, And righteousness in fountains from hill to valley flow.

Refrain The rulers bow before you, and gold and incense bring, All nations shall adore you, your praise all people sing; To you shall prayers unceasing and daily vows ascend; Your rule is still increasing, your rule is without end.

*Affirmation of Faith The Apostles’ Creed (traditional version)

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

Call to Prayer (hymn 469) Lord, listen to your children praying. Lord, send your Spirit in this place. Lord, listen to your children praying. Send us love; send us power; send us grace.

Prayers of the People - with The Lord’s Prayer (ecumenical version) Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.

WORSHIP NOTES

Today is the second Sunday after Christmas, and

the tenth day of Christmas (the lords are a-

leaping!). Christmas ends on January 6, the day of

Epiphany. In worship today, we are looking to

Epiphany, the manifestation of Jesus. The Magi

have seen the star in the east and followed it to

Bethlehem to see him for themselves, bearing

precious gifts as offering to him.

NEXT SUNDAY—A MERCY FOR ALL PEOPLE

The first adult education class for 2016 here at

FPC will be a five-week study on Islam. It will be

an excellent opportunity to separate fact from fic-

tion when it comes to what our Muslim brothers

and sisters believe. Dr. Phillip Sherman, assistant

professor of religion at Maryville College, will

teach the class, which runs from January 10-

February 7. The class will meet at 1:00 p.m. in the

fellowship hall.
